  • [MODIFIED] Digital Night Photography – Two Ways to Prevent Camera Shake

    Your digital photos at nighttime need not be blurry if you use one of these techniques.

    While most digital camera manuals describe the self-timer mode, where the camera takes a picture several seconds after the shutter speed is pressed, as “good for portraits”, the self-timer mode can be very useful for night photos as well.

    Most night photos, especially in situations where you cannot reliably use flash, require a shutter speed of half a second or longer else the subject will be too dark. This is to compensate for the lack of available light. Unfortunately, these situations, especially if you are unable to use a tripod, can result in camera shake….

  • Five Friends Take Same Picture for 30 Years

    Every five years since 1982, high school friends John Wardlaw, John Dickson, Mark Rumer, Dallas Burney and John Molony have taken the same photograph of themselves, in the same place – Copco Lake in California. The original photograph was taken on a holiday the group took when they were teenagers at Wardlaw’s family cabin, and every five years since, they have returned to the same spot and meticulously recreated the original pose.   • Mozilla Firefox – Plugins and Extensions – Double Click a Link to Open in a New Tab

    With the DblClicker extension you can double-click links to open up new tabs, useful for search results pages.

    When browsing a webpage in Firefox that contains a lot of links, such as a search engine results page, have you found yourself opening each link in a new tab so you can easily switch back to the results page instead of having to use the back button?

    If so, you probably have either held down the Ctrl or Command (Mac) key while clicking on each link, or you have right-clicked on each link and selected “Open Link in New Tab”….

  • German Designer Unveils Concept for ‘Instagram’ Glasses

    German designer Markus Gerke has unveiled a design concept for wearable glasses that could simulate the effect of Instagram filters. In one of the weirdest design concepts that we’ve ever seen, Gerke’s ‘Instaglasses’ would feature a built-in 5MP camera and microcomputer, and would be able to simulate the effects of different Instagram effects filters at the push of a button, before capturing and uploading the scene to Instagram. We’d be very surprised if Gerke’s idea comes to fruition any time soon, but it’s a fascinating concept. Click through for the full story (via Mail Online)

  • Miscellaneous Software – Prevent Maximized Programs From Taking Up the Whole Screen

    Stop hiding parts of the Desktop when maximizing applications by using the freeware MaxMax.

    It seems counterintuitive, doesn’t it? When you maximize a program in Windows, by nature you want the window to take up the entire Desktop (except for the Taskbar in most cases) -right?

    There may be instances where you don’t want maximized windows to be – well, maximized. Perhaps you have some Sidebar gadgets that you want to remain visible and not covering up part of the maximized window. Maybe you have a Desktop calendar and want to keep it shown. Or perhaps you have a window containing status information on part of the screen and don’t want it covered by other windows. For these cases, there’s the freeware MaxMax….

  • Metabones creates second-generation Canon EF to Sony NEX ‘Smart Adapter’

    Metabones has announced an updated version of its Canon EF adapter for Sony NEX E-mount. The second version of the Smart Adapter will feature a screw-on Arca Swiss-style tripod mount, improved anti-reflection shieding and a mode that releases the aperture and stops image stabilization to reduce battery consumption. As with the original version, the Second Edition Smart Adapter offers aperture control, image stabilization and EXIF reporting compatibility with most EF and EF-S lenses. It will be available from August 2012 at the same $ 400 list price as the existing version.

  • [MODIFIED] Digital Urban and Cityscape Photography – Look Outside the Main Business / Financial District

    Step outside of a city’s main district for some of the best skyline digital photos opportunities.

    Instead of taking the usual cityscape photos while inside the main Financial or Business Districts, you may want to scout out areas outside of the main ‘hustle and bustle’ to take wide-angle skyline photos that showcase more of a city’s architecture.

    In Chicago, instead of just taking Loop pictures from the Chicago River and other well-photographed vantage points, consider heading out to Navy Pier to take a cityscape photo on the lakefront. Or, another great photo opportunity is north at Lincoln Park; shoot south, towards the skyscrapers, and part of Lake Michigan will be in view….

  • Pro shooter to cover London 2012 using Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5

    Panasonic has announced that Getty Images sports photographer Dean Mouhtaropoulos will be covering the London 2012 Olympic Games exclusively using its recently-announced Lumix DMC-G5. His images will be displayed both at the Getty Gallery next to London’s Olympic Park, and on Panasonic UK’s homepage. With sports photography traditionally the preserve of large SLR cameras, the company is hoping to showcase the capabilities of its mirrorless model in this notoriously-demanding field. We suspect the press release has more to do with making the most of its Olympic sponsorship than swaying other pros, but it should be interesting to see the results.

  • [MODIFIED] Clipboard Managers – Enhancers – Monitor the Clipboard and Create Permanent Clipboard Entries with ArsClip

    ArsClip can monitor your Windows clipboard and lets you paste recently-copied items, plus you can define permanent items accessible via hotkeys.

    ArsClip is a freeware clipboard enhancer for Windows XP and up. Arsclip remembers previous text and non-text items placed in the clipboard, accessible from most everywhere by pressing a Ctrl + Shift + Z hotkey.

    When run, the software places an icon on the System Tray – right-click to select options or press the customizable hotkey. History items can be edited or removed. You can also create permanent history items accessible via other customizable hotkeys, allowing you to create hotkeys for, as examples, your name, web or blog address, Facebook page, and Twitter account….
