  • Best snake SHED video. Baby corn snake. AMAZING detail (full shed)

    My pet corn snake Leeroy was due to shed. When he started pressing his face against the corner of the tank, I ran for my video camera. Usually he sheds in the middle of the night… was he actually going to do this in front of us?? Leeroy is the best and never ceases to amaze me. Last week he swallows a baby mouse while hanging and now this!! Here is a super high quality video of him shedding, from start to finish. Video was taken with a DSLR Nikon D90… sorry, I still need work on manual focusing with shallow depth of field 🙂

    Chelsea Girls is a 1966 experimental underground film directed by Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey. The film was Warhol’s first major commercial success after a long line of avant-garde art films (both feature length and short). It was shot at the Hotel Chelsea and other locations in New York City, and follows the lives of several of the young women who live there, and stars many of Warhol’s superstars. It is presented in a split screen, accompanied by alternating soundtracks attached to each scene and an alternation between black-and-white and color photography. The original cut runs at just over three hours long. The title, Chelsea Girls, is a reference to the location in which the film takes place. It was the inspiration for star Nico’s 1967 debut album, Chelsea Girl. The album featured a ballad-like track titled “Chelsea Girls”, written about the hotel and its inhabitants who appear in the film. The film was shot in the summer and early autumn of 1966 in various rooms and locations inside the Hotel Chelsea. Filming also took place at Warhol’s studio “The Factory.” Appearing in the film were many of Warhol’s regulars, including Nico, Brigid Berlin, Gerard Malanga, Mary Woronov as Hanoi Hannah, Ingrid Superstar, International Velvet and Eric Emerson.   • Life-Sized Dollhouse: Abandoned Home to Giant Playhouse

    In what may be the world’s strangest residential renovation, an artist-in-residence took this long-deserted and severely-dilapidated house, and restored it into what may be the world’s largest handmade dollhouse.

    Canadian artist Heather Benning found this home while staying in Redvers, Saskatchewan, with hints of color that only a creative mind could see as inspiration for a full-scale remodel into a brightly-colored playhouse.

    But lest you think she got off easy, simply installing some old furniture and painting the place: the roof needed to be re-shingled, rooms needed to be re-plastered and sections of the structure required shoring up even though the purpose was display and not occupation.

    One whole side, of course, also had to be removed to complete the effect, so that (like a scale dollhouse) people can see all aspects of the inside from the outside. The result somehow manages to be both charming and slightly creepy at the same time. Benning, meanwhile, continues to work with site-specific landscape-and-architecture pieces.

  • Portraits that Prop

     

    As a photographer, how many times have you had your portrait taken. There is nothing more uncomfortable and awkward than sitting in front of a camera trying to evoke a natural smile or a true, heart felt expression. Let’s be honest, the experience of having your portrait taken can be down right terrifying, yet we aspire to have our subjects pose and emote in an organic and subtle way that transcends and captures the embodiment of our subjects personality. Simple right?

    The reality is that the camera makes our subjects self-conscious and hyper aware of their appearance, with an overall fear of not capturing a single image that meets their approval. I mean, how many of us truly look in the mirror each morning thinking, “Wow, I am looking fantastically, good today?” Most of the time, all we can see are the imperfections and bothersome nuances that melt away and stifle the perception of our own esthetic. So how does one capture a nice, natural portrait?

    I have read many articles and blog posts concerning this topic. Many focus on trying to relax your subject either through gentle conversation and personal connection or simply by breaking out some wine as a medicament to treat the inhibitions created by the shoot. The truth is that there is no easy recipe to help overcome this problem. No matter whether you are shooting a model, family member, or even a close friend, the camera is still the giant 400 pound gorilla in the room that everyone knows is there regardless of any distractions. So what can we do?

    Aside from normal social graces and pre-planning for the shoot, I have one simple method that surprisingly works almost every time. PROPS! It is amazing what magic can happen when you give your subject something else to interact with while you are shooting. Cuts right through some of those awkwardly, silent moments when both you and the subject know things are not working yet no one wants to admit it. Yes, we all experience these gratingly, uncomfortable situations.

    So what kind of props am I talking about? All and any kinds. They can be silly, beautiful, interesting or even surprisingly strange. These can be fresh flowers, a costume, a masquerade mask, a piece of interesting fabric, a hat, a pet, a piece of fruit, sports equipment, a music instrument, a lawn mower, oven mitts, or even an original, mint in box, Darth Vader action figure from Star Wars. The reality is that any item that has some meaning to the subject or that they can relate to will work and don’t be afraid to go way outside the box into the realm of the disturbingly obscure or insanely cliche. It is amazing how a simple prop can break the ice and give the subject something with which to interact, allowing you to capture a few true emotive moments when they have forgotten about the camera, shed some of the self conscious inhibitions and helped you create a beautifully expressive portrait.

  • Creating Anaglyph Images Using Autodesk Composite

    Level: Intermediate Recorded In: 3ds Max 2011, Autodesk Composite 2011 Files used: areadownloads.autodesk.com Description: This movie shows how to create anaglyth(3D) images using the Composite map. Anaglyph images provide a stereoscopic 3D effect when viewed with red & cyan glasses. The benefit of the technique shown here is that it uses features built in 3ds Max, instead of relying on commercial applications or plugins. You will need a pair of anaglyth glasses in order to experiment the end results seen here. If you don’t have any, run an internet search for “3D anaglypth glasses”. Many sites sell inexpensive paper glasses that work well. In order to try the technique shown here, you need to have Autodesk Composite installed on your system. Autodesk Composite can be found on the 3ds Max Install DVD.
