Floating Farms: Agricultural Barges to Yield 10 Tons Per Year

28 Sep

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ]

offshore farm barges

Powered by solar-paneled roofs overhead, these barge farms feature hydroponic space for produce above and support fish farming below, using extant technologies to offshore vast quantities of food to be grown on the water.

floating modular barge farms

Based in Barcelona, Forward Thinking Architecture is pushing its Smart Floating Farms concept to interested cities and investors, boasting the modularity of this system that can start with a single barge or morph into a fleet of connected vessels. Each barge is designed to yield over 8 tons of fruits and vegetables and nearly 2 tons of fish per year.

The barges would be 656 by 1,150 feet and contain its own desalination plant, able to turn saltwater to fresh for farming purposes. Solar, wind and wave power render each platform self-sufficient in terms of energy as well as relatively independent, needing little human interaction or intervention to function.

While there is no set date for launching the first of these floating farms, the feasibility of the system is promising. It does not presuppose any technology that does not already exist, and represents a natural expansion of development beyond land to adjacent open spaces on the water.

From the architects: “The world population is predicted to grow from 6.9 billion in 2010 to 8.3 billion in 2030 and to 9.1 billion in 2050. By 2030, food demand is predicted to increase by 50% (70% by 2050). The main challenge facing the agricultural sector is not so much growing 70% more food in 40 years, but making 70% more food available on the plate.”

One Image of an Entire Year

02 Jun

We’re feeling super inspired by this photograph by Eirik Solheim.

Eirik set up an SLR in a window and snapped a pic every half hour for one year. This left him with 16,000 images. Whoa. He picked out 3,888 of ‘em and used a bit of code to stitch them into a single image.

You may not have a spare SLR that could be set up in a window for a year, but this idea can totally be taken in other directions.

  • Take 4 photos of a local park, one for every season, and use your usual photo editor to cut ‘n paste pieces into one image.
  • Make a composite of your summer campsite – take one photo an hour for twelve hours.
  • Set your camera up on the beach and grab a shot every half hour of the tide going out. (Check here for local tide schedules!)

Start a New Great Year – How To Develop Ideas More Creatively

05 Jan

As a photographer, coming up with ideas and visualizing what you imagined in an image, is an essential progress. Coming up with those (hopefully) great ideas isn’t an easy task though because of the sheer flood of pictures that everyone sees everyday. Here are my strategies for coming up with ideas that help you stand out from the masses. According Continue Reading

38 Images of Different Ways to Bring in the New Year

02 Jan

What does a starting a new year mean for you? Is it about parties and drinking cocktails? Or maybe fireworks and celebration in a loud way (like here in Nicaragua)?  Perhaps you sit at home and watch it all on TV as the apple drops in NYC over Times Square.

Or maybe you take some time to reflect and meditate on what you achieved over the last year and think about your goals, dreams and plans for the next 12 months? Does it slip past midnight quietly with you tucked snugly into your bed?

Holiday time and new year can mean many different things to different people, including how it is celebrated. So I rounded up a set of images that represent some of the different options. How did you celebrate or spent you New Year’s eve?

One door (2014) closes and another opens (2015).

How will you get started in 2015?
