Hands-on with the 20.7MP Sony Xperia Z1

We’re at the IFA trade show in Berlin this week, checking out new tech aimed at photography enthusiasts. One stand-out is the latest flagship smartphone from Sony, the Xperia Z1 (which had the codename of ‘Honami’). Sony’s certainly put the focus on imaging here with an F2.0, 27mm equivalent lens and a 20.7 megapixel, 1/2.3″ BSI-CMOS sensor, as well as a new physical shutter button. Sony Xperia Z Camera Review: Do its impressive specs measure up?

Sony’s flagship Xperia Z offers some head-turning specs, including a 13-megapixel primary camera and a high-definition 1920×1080 443 ppi display on its 5-inch screen. It’s even and water- and dust-resistant — the ad campaign shows users rinsing the Xperia Z off by pouring water over it. Sony Xperia Z sinks in DxOMark Mobile Report

We just published the DxOMark Mobile Report for the Sony Xperia Z on connect.dpreview.com and the results don’t look fantastic. DxO’s imaging experts have analyzed 14 aspects of mobile imaging including detailed image quality assessment, flash performance, autofocus reliability and more to calculate a final score and the Sony scores lower than most of its competitors. We will start working on our evaluation once we receive a review unit at DPR Connect but for now click through to find out how the Sony Xperia Z’s camera performed in the DxO lab tests.
