Sony announces Xperia XZ flagship device with triple-sensor camera

02 Sep

Sony has announced its new top-end device in the Xperia Z line at IFA in Berlin and in the camera department the new model comes with what the company calls ‘triple sensor’ technology. In practical terms this means that the Sony IMX300 1/2.3” 23MP image sensor with on-sensor phase detection is accompanied by a laser that measures the distance to the subject and improves AF speed and accuracy in low light; and an RGBC-IR sensor that measures the color values of a scene in order to fine-tune the white balance system. The hybrid AF-system is also predictive and can track subjects in motion.

The Sony G lens comes with a 24mm equivalent focal length and an F2.0 aperture. In video mode the camera can record footage in 4K resolution and the Xperia XZ is also the first device on which Sony has implemented 5-axis electronic video stabilization. At the front there is a 13MP 1/3″ sensor with F2.0 aperture and 1080p video, specifications that would have been worthy of a main camera not too long ago.

The Android 6.01 system is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset and 3GB of RAM. 32 or 64GB of internal storage are expandable via microSD card. Intelligent battery management means you are getting as much time as possible out of the 2900 mAh battery which also supports quick-charging. With a 1080p resolution and 5.2” diagonal the display specifications have not changed from previous high-end Xperia devices.

All the technology is wrapped up in an 8.1mm thin metal body with rounded edges, that is water and dust tight (IP65/68). A fingerprint sensor has been integrated into the power button for added security. The Sony Xperia XZ doesn’t offer any huge improvements over previous devices in the series but looks like a solid update. It will be available in Europe from October for €699 (approximately $ 780), there is no word on availability in other regions yet.

Sony Xperia X Compact offers high-end camera in smaller format

02 Sep

Along with the Xperia XZ, Sony has launched the Xperia X Compact. It’s aimed at users who want a powerful camera in a compact body but can live with a slightly less powerful chipset.

The X Compact comes with the same 23MP ‘triple sensor’ main camera with laser-AF and color sensor as the Xperia XZ, but doesn’t offer 4K video and uses a front camera with a lower 5MP resolution, compared to the XZ’s 13MP. Like previous Sony Compact models the new device has a 4.6” display with 720p HD resolution, putting it in direct competition with Apple’s iPhone 6s. The Sony is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 650 chipset and features 3GB of RAM in conjunction with 32GB of internal storage. The latter is expandable via a microSD slot. Power is provided by a 2700 mAh battery, that, like on the larger model, supports smart battery management and quick charging.

The power button doubles as fingerprint reader to ensure secure device access and online shopping. In contrast to the Xperia XZ the Compact model comes with a plastic body that does not feature any environmental protection. However, this is reflected in pricing. The Xperia Z Compact will be available in Europe from September for a more affordable €449 (approximately $ 560).

Sony Xperia X Performance achieves top score in DxOMark Mobile ranking

29 Jul

DxoMark has published its test results for Sony’s flagship device in the Xperia X series, the Xperia X Performance. At 88 points the Sony achieves the same score as the HTC 10 and Samsung Galaxy S7 and now shares the top spot in the DxOMark Mobile rankings with those phones.

The DxOMark testers were particularly impressed by the Xperia X Performance’s fast and accurate AF system, good exposure and dynamic range, well-controlled noise in low light and good detail in flash images. On the downside, the HDR mode does not always trigger when it should, small amounts of chroma noise are visible in outdoor conditions and the white balance is inconsistent when shooting with flash.

The Xperia X Performance comes with a very similar camera specification to the Xperia Z5. A 23MP 1/2.3-inch Sony Exmor multi-aspect sensor is coupled with a F2.0 aperture in a wide angle lens with an equivalent focal length of 24mm. A predictive AF system, developed in collaboration with the engineers in Sony’s Alpha camera division, allows for improved subject tracking and low light mode ISO to be increased to 12800. You can read the full test report on the DxOMark website.

Sony Xperia XA Ultra comes with 16MP OIS front cam

19 May

Sony first announced its new Xperia X line of smartphones at MWC earlier this year. Now the Japanese manufacturer has added another model to the line in the shape of the Xperia XA Ultra. As the ‘Ultra’ moniker suggests the new device is larger than the standard XA model. The XA Ultra display measures 6 inches instead of 5 but retains the 1080p resolution and overall design.

That said, the XA Ultra’s headline feature is its front camera. It comes with a 16MP Exmor R sensor, optical image stabilization and a front flash, making it a significant upgrade to the original XA’s front camera, which at 8MP is no slouch either. The wide 88 degree viewing angle should allow for group self-portraits without selfie-sticks or similar contraptions.  The main camera has been upgraded as well and features a 21.5MP Exmor RS sensor with Hybrid-AF, which sounds similar to the camera specification of the Xperia Z3+.

The rest of the specification arguably puts the XA Ultra into the mid-range bracket of the market. The Android 6.0 operating system is powered by a MediaTek MT6755 chipset and 3GB of RAM. 16GB of storage can be expanded via a microSD slot and Sony says the 2700 mAh battery is good for two days of use. Given the large screen, we’d take that statement with a pinch of salt though. The Sony Xperia XA Ultra will be available from July but no detail on pricing and regional availability has been released yet.

16 Feb

In terms of processing power, look and feel the Sony Xperia M5 is categorized below Sony’s Xperia Z flagship line of smartphones. However, like the Z-models it’s dustproof, waterproof and has a lot to offer in the photography department. The rear camera offers a 21.5MP Sony Exmor sensor with on-chip phase detection combined with an F2.2. lens, as well as 4K video recording. Scoring 79 in DxOMark’s Mobile testing, it sets the bar as the best mid-range device in DxO’s rankings – on par with previous-generation flagships like the Samsung Galaxy S5.
