30 Creative Cinemagraphs to Drive You Wild With Inspiration

20 Jan

Cinemagraphs are still images that contain within themselves moving elements allowing a glimpse of time to be preserved and experienced. Just like the magical newspaper from the Harry Potter movies, these animated GIF images leave the impression that you’re watching a short video. According to Wikipedia, the cinemagraph technique was created by photographers Jamie Beck and Kevin Burg, who used Continue Reading

Across the Country in 12 Images: 6,000 Wild Miles of America

[ By WebUrbanist in Global & Travel & Places. ]

cross country new mexico

It can be hard to explain to someone from Europe or elsewhere just how vast and variegated the United States really is, but this short epic photo series is a great start. It depicts a series of surreal landscapes, carefully chosen to show the amazing range of environments found across the American West.

cross country nevada

Photographer Reuben Wu came originally from the United Kingdom and was awed by what he found traveling cross-country in America. On his latest trip from his home in Chicago, he looped through the northern and southern Midwest on his way to the West Coast and back, taking incredible images along the way, dubbing the series Cross Country.

He traveled this route with a plan: capture scenes at night when natural marvels were devoid of human activity and using technology to calculate when peak moonlight would allow for stunning visibility. The result is this set of vivid images that make familiar places seem alien, and speak both to beautiful variety and carefully found settings.

Subjects of the series span from Illinois and Indiana through North Dakota and Nevada, California, New Mexico and Kansas, and featured sites (or sights) include: Yellowstone, Badlands, Death Valley, the Grand Canyon and the Grand Prismatic Spring, the Devil’s Tower and the Smith Mansion.

Wild Water Crossings: 14 Bold & Crazy Bridge Concepts

14 Oct

[ By Steph in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ]

Concept Bridge Designs Main

Even ordinary bridges are complex structures, but add in multiple levels,  undulating ribbons of steel, elements that dip into the water or roads that split into scissor-like blades and you’ve got quite a dynamic feat of engineering. Some of those potential feats are a little more achievable than others. These 14 (more!) bridge concepts include a few innovative designs that are actually going to be built, while others have been deemed ‘too crazy’ to ever be real.

Entwined Ribbon Bridge for China

Concept Bridge Designs Ribbon China

The competition this concept was shortlisted for has been canceled, so it may never be achieved in physical form. Denton Corker Marshall architects designed this bridge for Jinsha Lake in Hangzhou, with one ribbon offering a flat surface for cyclists, one rising into the air to offer various views, and a third decorative ribbon winding between the first two.

Tulip Bridge for Amsterdam

Bridge Concept Designs Tulip

The ‘petals’ of this wooden bridge blossom and unfold in various configurations throughout the day, variously allowing pedestrians to cross the water or, if they so desire, jump in. Designed by MLBS Architects, the Tulip Bridge functions as a symbolic landmark for Amsterdam. When all of its petals are flat, it makes up a large plaza with plenty of room for the flow of pedestrians, but when all of the petals are raised (except for one that allows entry) it can turn into an exhibition space.

Bay Bridge Tourist Park

Concept Bridge Designs Bay 1

Concept Bridge Designs Bay 2

The September 2nd, 2013 opening of the new East Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge made the old one obsolete: so what to do with it? Some have called for it to be broken up and made into housing, others want to see it converted into a public park. Architects Rael San Fratello have a few tongue-in-cheek designs taking these ideas into consideration. How about bike paths, combing walls, outdoor cinemas, hotel rooms and a giant swimming pool? Together, these ideas may be a little over the top, but they present a few intriguing possibilities.

Habitable Bridge for Seville, Spain

Concept Bridge Designs Habitable Seville 1

Concept Bridge Designs Habitable Seville 2

A sinuous bridge mimicking the waves of the river below it could act as a cultural center of Seville, Spain. This concept incorporates two layers – a sunny, grassy surface on top, and a shaded area with stepped seating closer to the water. The proposal also incorporates an existing tobacco factory, renovating it into an auditorium with a ground level piazza.

Parametric Cloud Bridge

Concept Bridge Design Parametric Cloud 1

This design doesn’t exactly conform to the general idea of what a bridge is, and should be. Unusual and unexpected, ‘Cloudbridge’ by Arturo Tedeschi architects creates a non-linear path between two points. The shape was determined by an algorithm that produces a cloud-shaped grid balancing the asymmetric loads of the footbridge.

You are My Wild — Great Kid Photography That’ll Inspire Your Own At-Home Photos

25 Apr

When you were a kid, having a camera in front of you was just a little less scary. You probably didn’t even notice it was there most of the time.

It’s that enviable carefree ‘tude kids have that makes taking portraits of them so much fun.

That’s just what You are My Wild is all about. 14 photographers document how they see their kids by submitting one remarkable portrait each week.

Meaghan Curry explains how it started:

Right after the new year, and in sort of a creative lull, we were brainstorming about starting a project to force ourselves to put down our phone cameras down and pick up our other cameras more regularly…

Ironically, Instagram is the common thread between us. It is where we found other people documenting their children in really loving, beautiful and respectful ways.

We hoped that some of these other IG photographers would be interested in using their higher quality cameras to “see” the same way that we were using our phone cameras.

And it seems to have worked! Check out their portraits, and may they inspire you to photograph your loved ones in a new light.

Slam Drunk: 12 Weird, Wild & Wacky Basketball Courts

12 Weird, Wild & Wacky Basketball Courts
These 12 jaw-dropping basketball courts stretch the limits of Dr. James Naismith’s original vision far beyond the prescient gym teacher’s wildest hoop dreams.

Inges Idee’s 3D² Court

We’re not sure if the Occupational School Center Munich in Germany even has a basketball team but if they don’t, they should, since their decidedly out of the ordinary three-dimensional court takes the concept of home field advantage to absurd levels.

Titled 3D² by artist Inges Idee and created in 2006, the regulation-sized basketball court incorporates several of the existing lamp posts that – besides providing light – add an extra dimension of difficulty to any attempted game. According to Idee, playing on the computer-designed court “requires creative engagement for its use.” No kidding.

Space Jammed

Space is at a premium in the ancient seaside city of Dubrovnik but so is the desire to go one-on-one with one’s fellow dribblers. Captured magnificently by Flickr user SloTraveller, this otherwise unremarkable clay court shoehorned between centuries-old buildings is a favorite photographic subject aided by some spectacular points of view.

Ducks Dunks Deluxe

“Riding the pine” took on a new and better meaning for members of the University of Oregon Ducks when, in 2011, their strikingly stenciled new basketball court was unveiled to the public. “We wanted to design the most iconic television presence possible for the University of Oregon,” explained Nike’s vice president for design and special projects Tinker Hatfield, “by conjuring up a highly unique and visible basketball floor design” at Matthew Knight Arena. We’d say they succeeded.

Intended to reflect the view of someone looking skyward from a Pacific Northwest forest floor, the court is made from 6,944 square feet of sustainably-harvested Northern Hard Maple weighing approximately 45,000 total pounds. The graphics were completed by Idaho Falls, Idaho -based United Services using almost 2 miles of stencil material and requiring 2,500 man hours of labor.

Wild Horses: The Art of Making a Real 3D Poster

19 Jan

[ By Steph in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

Wild Horses 3D Paper Sculpture 1

A nearly-life-sized, faceted white paper horse bursting out of a wall in an urban setting can’t fail to grab your attention. Bolder and more dynamic than a two-dimensional poster, this 3D papercraft project by Xavier Barrade from the design firm FOAM promotes the song ‘Horses’ by UK-based band Dry the River.

Wild Horses 3D Paper Sculpture 2

Wild Horses 3D Paper Sculpture 5

The horses were created in Google Sketchup, then printed, folded and assembled by hand. Each one took about 35 hours to complete. Watch the whole process, from printing to the public’s reaction, in this mesmerizing video.

Wild Horses 3D Paper Sculpture 4

In cities, where signs and advertisements covering virtually every surface compete for the eyeballs of passersby, posters can be easy to overlook. This installation project doesn’t just draw in curious onlookers, it breaks up the monotony of daily life for pedestrians and integrates some much-needed art into the urban landscape.

Girls Gone Wild

18 Dec

For her graduation present, George’s daughter McKenzie hits the sun and fun of South Beach, Miami along with Tammy’s daughters, Lindsey and Megan, and Lauri’s daughter, Ashley. Money woes put a damper on the Knickerbocker girls’ good time and a trip to a famous tattoo parlor gets McKenzie in hot water with dad George. Vicki invites Jeana, Colton, Tammy and Frankie to spend the weekend with her and Donn at their Lake Havasu vacation home. The alcohol flows like the river on which they party, but tensions between Vicki and Donn threaten to ruin the trip. Things turn dangerous when Colton takes a shocking death defying jump. Laurie furthers her wedding plans by choosing a photographer and wedding invitations, while newly single Kara contemplates an offer from mother Jeana to take part in a mother/daughter pictorial for Playboy magazine. Tamra throws a big birthday bash for son, Spencer, who just turned seven. The party atmosphere can’t tame the tension between her oldest son, Ryan, and her husband, Simon. Later at a family dinner, jobless Ryan bickers with step dad Simon, putting Tamra in the middle again.
