CameraMator – Kickstarter project offers Wi-Fi tethering for DSLRs

15 Jan

CameraMator2.jpg

CameraMator is one of the more interesting photographic gadgets we saw at CES this year. It’s a Kickstarter-funded Wi-Fi tethering accessory for Canon and Nikon DSLRs that gives remote live view, camera triggering and image download to Android and iOS devices. The device itself mounts on the hot shoe and can connect to a local Wi-Fi network or peer-to-peer with the mobile device. The standard USB lead that comes with the camera gives the unit access to the camera’s key features. Find out more over on Connect.

Nikon has announced the D5200 – an upper entry-level DSLR that improves on the D5100 by offering a 24MP CMOS sensor (probably the same one we’ve seen in the D3200), 1080p/60i movie capability, a side-articulated 921K dot 3.0″ tilt/swivel LCD and new processing filters. Interestingly, the D5200 is equipped with a significantly upgraded AF system, based around the same Multi-Cam 4800DX AF sensor that is used in the D7000, and the same 2016-pixel RGB metering sensor. The D5200 is also compatible with Nikon’s optional WU-1a WiFi module. Pricing and availability has yet to be confirmed.

PQI Air Wi-Fi MicroSD to SD adapter reviewed by DCWatch

18 Oct

PQIAir.png

Japanese camera site DCWatch has reviewed the PQI Air Wi-Fi Micro-SD to SD adapter. The adapter features a built-in Wi-Fi transmitter but, unlike rival FlashAir or Eye-Fi cards, does not feature any internal memory of its own – instead allowing you to swap MicroSD cards in and out. The adapter communicated with smartphones via an Android or iOS app from where you can browse and download images from the camera. The system allows you to swap inexpensive standard MicroSD cards, rather than buying multiple Wi-Fi cards, also allowing you to upgrade the speed or capacity of card without having to replace the Wi-Fi component.
