Windows 8 – View File Extensions for Security

16 Oct

Configure Windows 8 Explorer to show file extensions when browsing through files on the Desktop.

For security, it is important to be able to view file extensions when browsing through folders in Windows 8. For example, a miscreant may send you a file named fireworks.jpg that you think is a harmless .JPG photo, yet actually is fully named fireworks.jpg.exe, containing a virulent payload that could harm your machine, data, and/or privacy.

Unlike earlier versions of Windows, Windows 8 does not make you go through so many hoops to enable extension viewing – once you get to the standard Desktop interface, of course….

1. Click the “Start” button (or press the Windows key on the keyboard) and click the Sports tile from the Start Menu. If you cannot find it, just start typing sports and click “Sports” underneath “Apps” when it displays….

[MODIFIED] Google Chrome – View Web Pages in Full Screen Mode and Switch Between Tabs with Keyboard Shortcuts

30 Aug

Toggle full screen mode in the Google Chrome web browser. While tabs are hidden, switch between pages with keyboard shortcuts.

This is a simple Google Chrome tip, but beginners may find it useful. Others still may learn a keyboard shortcut or two.

When browsing a web page that you plan on staying at for awhile, such as a web-based electronic mail service such as Gmail, you might wish to temporarily hide everything else onscreen including Chrome’s address bar to view more of the page. …

Google Chrome – View Kittens and Pandas Everywhere!

14 May

Replace ugly images on webpages viewed in Google Chrome with pandas and kitties.

Have you visited a website inside Google Chrome and found that the images got you down? Wish you saw something cute instead?

The Cutify extension lets you replace photos on webpages with images of baby goats, bunnies, kittens, red pandas, and sloths. That’s right – if you’d rather not see an image of a reality TV star, political figure, or arrogant athlete you can right-click on their photo and choose “Cutify” – “Cutify to Cute Kittens”. It’s that simple….

180º Night Sky View Above Death Valley’s Racetrack

05 Nov

And now for something completely different. Thanks to Borrowlenses.com I made use of Canon’s new 8-15mm zoom fisheye lens. In some weird way I really fell in love with the 8mm focal length that has 180º field of view.

What you’re seeing in this photo is a view straight up. Within the circle is every star in the sky visible at this one moment and the band of stars seen from the upper left corner down to the lower right corner is the visible arm of the Milky Way. Looking at the center of the circle and then slightly up and to the right is Jupiter. The uneven edges of the circle is the silhouette of the mountains surrounding the dry lake bed I was standing on. With a 180º view, the edge of the entire valley could be seen.

If you think this is cool just wait. I have a time-lapse of this view in the oven.

Microsoft Word 2010 – Remove White Space Between Pages in Print Layout View

23 Sep

In Word 2010, if there is too much white space between pages when viewing documents in Print Layout View, here’s how to reduce it.

When viewing Microsoft Word 2010 documents in “Print Layout” view, a small amount of space is added between pages, presumably to make the separation between pages more clear-cut onscreen.

If you perform document editing where you need to look at the bottom of one page and the top of the next page, you might find these few pixels a waste of space, especially on smaller monitors. Thus there are a couple of ways you can reduce the space between pages to only a couple of pixels:…
