Sony has announced the Alpha 7S, a 12MP full-frame mirrorless camera designed for both stills and video. The camera can read out its entire sensor fast enough to output 8-bit 4:2:2 4k video over HDMI at up to 30p, without line skipping or pixel binning. This also promises higher quality for the 1080p video (at up to 60p) it can record internally. Unlike the a7 and a7R, the latest model is not constrained by the AVCHD standard, also offering the XAVC S system, with bitrates of up to 50Mbps. Details are still being announced: more to follow.

Better Landscape Photography Tips and Video Tutorials

30 Mar

This week I’m going to turn the focus to landscape photography. Your photography challenge this week being “Flora” it’s a good time to get out and there go find some great landscapes. So I’ve actually found not one, but three, short video tutorials with some really good landscape photography tips.

#1 Top 10 pro landscape shooting tips

As the title eludes to, this video shares 10 quick tips to help you get going. At just over four minutes you don’t have to waste any time before you get out shooting. The tips include: focal point, tripod, time of day, rule of thirds and more.

#2 Low Light Landscape Photography Tips

This one is by Stuart Low Photography and he goes over some tips for shooting when the light maybe isn’t so great like a gray gloomy day, and how to create interesting compositions. Besides, I just love his accent!

#3 The Australian Photography Show Ep1 – Landscapes

Last but not least is a really good video by Zulu Media. They go on a location photo shoot with landscape photographer Adam Monk at the famous Australian landmark, The Pinnacles. You don’t have to live in Australia to be able to use his tips though, you can apply these to any location and use them immediately. Some really good stuff in here as the two photographers show different ways of approaching the same subject matter and talk about lenses, camera settings and composition for impact.

I hope you enjoy these landscape photography tips. If you want more you can check out the Best landscape articles of 2013 here on dPS, or Living Landscapes, one of our most popular eBooks!

Gulf Photo Plus 2014 Shootout Video is Live

26 Mar

Earlier this month I had the honor to host (read: did not have to compete in) the Gulf Photo Plus 2014 Shootout, which this year featured Zack Arias vs. Sara Lando. Zack is a multi-year veteran, Sara is a newb. You’d think she’d be an easy put-down. You’d be wrong.

Having been the first person to walk out on stage in the first-ever shootout in 2010, I can tell you it is absolutely terrifying. You feel as if you have made a terrible mistake, and that you have everything to lose and nothing to gain.

You feel as if the creative part of your brain just announced, “Eff this. I’m outta here.” and you watched it walk out of the room.

What I am trying to say is for any of you thinking, “I’d love to do that! That looks like fun!” No. It’s terrifying.

Also, it’s hard capture the pure tension of this event in a time-compressed video. But just imagine how you would have handled the challenge. Or, more accurately, how you’d like to think you would have handled it.

For a very good look at what it truly feels like to compete in this, read Sara’s post mortem she filed right after the experience.

And yes—long pants! Too long, actually. I grabbed a pair that had not yet been hemmed as I was headed out the door for Dubai. But that just averages out for years of shorts, I guess. The bow tie was a last-second call, and a gift from Sara. Me primitive. Me not have that much style.

Finally, if you ever, ever get the chance to go to Gulf Photo Plus, make sure you do not leave before attending the shootout in person. It’s truly awesome.
