Fujifilm X-T3 is three-time winner in our updated buying guides

08 Nov

We’ve updated fifteen of our camera buying guides and the Fujifilm X-T3 came out on top in three of them. We now consider it the best camera under $ 1500 and a good alternative to more expensive cameras for video and ‘people and events’.

If you’re in the market for a new camera then head on over to our buying guide hub page, which is also where you’ll find our new lens buying guides.

In the time since we posted our first look at the iPhone XS’ image quality, we’ve continued shooting with its larger sibling, the XS Max. The two devices use identical 12MP dual-camera systems, boasting better HDR and Portrait Mode effects thanks to processing and computational improvements. Take a look at some additional sample images from Apple’s latest flagship phone.

Leica M10-P real-world samples gallery updated

04 Sep

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_1916499575″,”galleryId”:”1916499575″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

The new Leica M10-P updates the M10 with the addition of a touchscreen, electronic level and a quieter shutter. Image quality from the 24MP full-frame sensor and Maestro II processor is unchanged, but the somewhat more discreet ‘P’ variant could be more interesting to candid and street photographers than the stock M10.

We took the M10-P out for a weekend on the Washington coast, and we’ve just updated our previously-published gallery of sample images with a selection of images converted from Raw using ACR 11.

Updated firmware for Fujifilm X-T100 and X-A5 include two new filters, square capture mode

30 Aug

Fujifilm has new firmware updates for its X-A5 and X-T100 mirrorless cameras. The updates include new and updated features in addition to a number of bug fixes.

First up is the Fujifilm X-A5. Firmware version 1.20 adds two new Advance Filters called ‘Rich & Fine’ and ‘Monochrome [NIR].’ The ‘Rich & Fine’ filter is made for food and still life photography, with an emphasis on saturated colors and a slight vignette. As the name suggests, the ‘Monochrome [NIR]’ filter simulates the look of a near-infrared camera through selective toning of the scene.

Also included in the update is a new Square Mode, which enables 1:1 format capture and improved autofocus accuracy in AF-C mode when the shutter is half-pressed. A bug that caused the highlight warning not to show in the Info display has also been squashed, alongside a few others.

Onto the X-T100, firmware version 1.10 adds the same two new Advance Filters, Square capture mode, improved autofocus accuracy in AF-C mode present in the X-A5 firmware update. Fujifilm has also made the default ISO setting when switching between P, S, A, M, Adv modes ‘Auto.’

Fujifilm also fixed an issue with the autofocus frame shifting when zooming in on the focus position display. Other bug fixes, including the aforementioned highlight warning issue, have been included as well.

You can download firmware version 1.20 for the X-A5 and firmware version 1.10 for the X-T100 on Fujifilm’s website. Installation instructions are found on the bottom of the respective update pages.

Google Pixel 3 leaks, comes with single camera and updated camera app

24 Aug

We are very much used to information about new products being leaked before the launch date, and especially so in the case of smartphones and other tech. However, the case of the upcoming Google Pixel 3 device is somewhat special.

It looks like several pre-production units were stolen from Google and are being sold on the black market. One device made its way to Russian tech site Mobile Review, which produced a fully-fledged hands-on review – of a device that hasn’t even been launched yet.

Thanks to leak and article we now know the Pixel 3 will come with a 12.2MP single-camera – at a time when most direct rivals feature dual-camera setups and, in the case of the Huawei P20 Pro, even a triple camera. There is also an 8MP dual front-camera.

Camera performance on previous Pixel model was excellent, thanks to Google’s outstanding software processing, and we should again expect class-leading detail and dynamic range from the new Google device. However, without a secondary tele-lens the Pixel is likely going to struggle against some competitors in the zoom department.

The camera user interface shown in the Mobile Review article is also different to the current version. Shooting modes are now listed above the shutter button instead of in a menu. You can cycle through Panorama, Portrait, Camera, and Video modes. You can also access Google Lens, Slow Motion video, and Photo Sphere through a More icon.

“Beautification” in Portrait mode can now be set to Natural and Soft face-retouching in addition to switching it off altogether and there is a new “Google Lens suggestions” mode.

The Mobile Review article is in Russian but you’ll find plenty of product images and even camera samples on the page, if you’d like to check image quality yourself. The final device is expected to be launched some time in October.
