Sigma 45mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary gallery updated

We first got our hands on Sigma’s full-frame 45mm F2.8 while covering the lens’ launch in Japan back in July. We recently took delivery of a copy here in Seattle, and we’ve updated our initial gallery accordingly, with plentiful new samples shot on the Sony a7R III. Yongnuo announces updated EF-mount 35mm F1.4 lens with ultrasonic motor

Yongnuo has announced its new YN35mm F1.4C DF UWM, a second-generation full-frame lens for Canon’s EF mount.

This new lens features the same optical construction (eleven elements in nine groups with a seven-blade aperture diaphragm) and outward appearance Yongnuo’s original YN35mm F1.4 MC lens. What’s new is the addition of an Ultrasonic Wave Motor (UWM).

Yongnuo hasn’t listed the price of the lens, which is set to ship in Q4 2019, but its predecessor currently retails for $ 378 (Adorama, B&H). It’s likely this new lens would replace the older model for roughly the same price.

Update (August 19, 2019): Updated article to clarify the Micro USB port was present on the first version of Yongnuo’s 35mm F1.4 lens as well.

Nikon Z6 and Z7 scoring updated to reflect firmware v2.0

The latest firmware for the Nikon Z6 and Z7 makes a significant difference to the cameras’ usability and focus performance, so we’ve revisited the scoring for both cameras to address the improvements.

We found the Eye AF system significantly improves the ease of shooting with the Z6 and also overcomes many of our concerns about the ability to fine-focus for portraiture. These improvements greatly change the user experience and are enough to bump the camera’s overall score up to 89%, making it the joint high-scorer in its class.

The change to the Z7’s score is less pronounced. This is partly because its 45MP sensor makes the slight inaccuracy of the Eye AF system more significant but also because the update doesn’t appear to make a big improvement to the camera’s low-light AF performance, which was a major factor in the camera’s AF score.

We’ve updated our ‘best fixed prime lens camera’ buying guide, adding the Leica Q2, Fujifilm XF10 and Ricoh GR III. Despite some solid competition, the Fujifilm X100F remains as our top choices in this category.

Canon Rebel SL3 (250D), Sony a6400 and Fujifilm X-T30 buying guides updated

10 May

We’ve updated a trio of buying guides, adding our final thoughts about the Sony a6400 and Fujifilm X-T30, along with our initial impressions of Canon’s EOS Rebel SL3 (EOS 250D).

While neither the a6400 or X-T30 came out on top in the guides below, we think they’re both well worth considering. Since the SL3 is yet to be reviewed, it’s not eligible for an award.
