10 Feb

sigma-dp2-quattro.png

Sigma has revealed the next generation of its DP series of APS-C sensor, fixed focal length cameras, with the DP2 Quattro. The latest, 45mm-equivalent, model features dramatic styling and a fundamental re-think of the company’s Foveon multi-layer sensor design. The Quattro sensor still uses three layers to detect color information but now only captures its full, 19.6 million pixel resolution in the top layer, with lower two layers capturing 4.9MP of information each. The sensor will also appear in 28mm and 75mm equivalent DP1 Quattro an DP3 Quattro models.

CES 2014: Fujifilm has announced the XF 56mm F1.2 R, a fast short telephoto ‘portrait’ lens for its X system mirrorless cameras. With an angle of view equivalent to an 85mm lens on full frame, it uses an internal focus design for fast, silent autofocus. It has an aperture ring, but unlike the company’s wide angle primes, no distance or depth of field scales. It’ll be available in February, with a suggested retail price of $ 999.99 / £999.99.

Just in time for the holiday season, Leica has announced a ‘Silver Edition’ of its D-Lux 6 premium compact camera, with a high-gloss black body and silver lens barrel. The camera also gets a new accessory: the Leica Soft Pouch in lambskin nappa leather, which the company says features a ‘fascinating wrap-around design’. The camera is otherwise the same as the standard D-Lux 6 (and by extension, very similar to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX7).

One of the original promises of the Micro Four Thirds system was to permit the design of small mirrorless cameras. Today Panasonic released its Lumix DMC-GM1, a tiny camera which can literally fit in the palm of your hand. Don’t be fooled, though: it shares the same 16 megapixel sensor as the GX7 and also offers silent shooting at shutter speeds as high as 1/16000 sec, Wi-Fi, and 1080/60i video recording. It’s bundled with a new 12-32mm F3.5-5.6 lens (also available separately) that rivals a pancake lens for compactness when ‘collapsed’.

Fujifilm unveils X-A1: an entry-level mirrorless with a conventional sensor

17 Sep

X-A1_Black_Front_High_angle_16-50mm.png

Fujifilm has announced the X-A1, its most basic X-mount mirrorless camera yet. The X-A1 shares a body with the X-M1 but is based around a 16MP sensor with a conventional, Bayer color filter array, rather than the X-Trans design used in the other X-series models. The X-A1 retains the 920k-dot tilting LCD and Wi-Fi offered by the X-M1, and is being launched with an MSRP of $ 599 with the XC 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS zoom lens – $ 100 cheaper than the X-M1 cost at its launch. The company has also announced the Fujinon XC 50-230mm F4.5-6.7 OIS – a relatively small, lightweight telezoom that would pair well with either the X-A1 or X-M1.

Nikon unveils tiny Coolpix S02 for ‘trendy individuals’

05 Sep

S02_SL_front34l_lc_DB.png

Nikon has taken the wraps off the Coolpix S02 – a tiny metal-bodied 13MP compact camera with a smartphone-sized CMOS sensor and 2.7-inch touch-sensitive LCD. The entire package, built around a 3x (30-90mm equiv) zoom lens is small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. In possibly the most cringeworthy press release we’ve seen from a major manufacturer this year, Nikon describes the S02 variously as ‘stylish’, ‘hip’, and ‘fashionable’, and suggests that it would make an ideal gift for a ‘trendy individual’. If this is up your street, note that the S02 will be available later this month in no less than three colors, at an MSRP of $ 179.95.

Canon unveils PowerShot SX510 HS and SX170 IS 16MP superzooms

22 Aug

sx510_thumb.png

Canon has announced its PowerShot SX510 and SX170 superzoom digital cameras. The PowerShot SX510 HS now uses a 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor (versus a 16MP CCD on its predecessor), hence the new ‘HS’ designation. It offers Wi-Fi connectivity and what’s almost certainly the same 24-720mm equivalent optical zoom lens, a 3-inch LCD and Full HD video. The SX170 is essentially the same as its SX160 that came before it, with a 16x optical zoom and 16 megapixel CCD, though it’s no longer powered by AA-batteries.
