For some of us, photography is a hobby. For others, it’s a way to make a living. For Forrest Sargent, a 22-year-old with autism who is unable to speak, it’s a veritable lifeline. His communication is limited to spelling out words using a letter board, a method which allowed him a much-needed way to express himself. Bleak and surreal: Photographer turns satellite images into open-source art
From the air, the landscape of Texas’ vast feedlots and oil fields is by turns bleak and surreal. Photographer Mishka Henner aimed to capture the contrasts and intense colors of these landscapes in a collection of work titled ‘Feedlots.’ By stitching together hundreds of satellite images, he created large, detailed prints documenting the dynamism of these locations – earth tones clashing with the violent greens and reds of feedlot waste. Street Mural Turns Into an Animation as People Drive By

Remember making hand-held flipbooks when you were a kid? Those cute little books that made primitive cartoons when you flipped through the pages quickly could amuse and entertain for hours. Recently, Argentinian street artist Hyuro brought that joyful amusement to Copenhagen on a long wall that many cars pass by every day.
In/between consists of 87 aluminum panels, each showing a piece of an animation. When seen all together from a moving car, the animation shows the short story of a deer running through a forest and then emerging. The animated mural is a classy, sophisticated piece of graffiti that the whole city gets to enjoy.
Hyuro and her helper painted the entire mural/animation by hand over the course of two weeks. Hyuro’s project was chosen in a competition held by artistic community ArtRebels, which drew submissions from artists all over the world.

Like the last episode of M*A*S*H, the choppers won’t be back. These abandoned heliports and helipads stand in silent contrast with their past buzzing busy-ness.Old Cold Warrior
(image via: Randy52)Sweeney Ridge in Pacifica, California is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area these days but back in Cold War times it sheltered a SF-51C Nike missile control facility. The sun-blistered helipad above was used to shuttle military personnel and support staff to and from the site. Kudos to Flickr user Randy Lloyd for capturing the eerie loneliness embodied in this long-disused helipad.
District 9 Revisited

The gritty war-zone vibe and stark stenciled lettering evoke the disturbing atmosphere that permeated the futuristic 2009 sc-fi film District 9, shot on location in South Africa. Coincidence or just bad vibes?

Are these the remains of a heliport in situ or have some of the original components been moved to a central scrap storage depot? Will the bits & pieces be reassembled someday by otherworldly refugees trapped in a desperate tug-of-war between brain and prawn? Ukraine Not Weak!
(images via: KyivPost)When Ukraine was awarded the honor of hosting the Euro 2012 soccer championship, the governmental powers that be decided a brand, spanking new heliport was needed to welcome assorted billionaires, oligarchs and the like. The order was given, $ 11 million worth of funding was committed and before long, the city of Kaniv boasted an impressive new heliport with a spiffy glass-walled mini-terminal. Unfortunately, the assorted billionaires, oligarchs and the like DIDN’T like the Kaniv heliport, which these days only impresses those who appreciate infrastructural white elephants.
