Google brings the National Parks to your living room with 360-virtual tours

26 Aug

In honor of the National Parks Centennial birthday celebration, Google has partnered with the National Parks Service to bring a unique and exciting virtual immersion experience to your fingertips. The Hidden Worlds of National Parks is a new exhibit that is part of Google’s larger Arts and Cultures Exhibit and Documentary series. In this new series, users will be able to visit and interact with some of the more obscure National Parks in the United States, such as the Dry Tortugas in Florida and the Kenai Fjords in Alaska through VR and 360 degree video tours.

In the video experience a National Parks service ranger will guide you through one of the five park options. Users will be taken on unique guided tours such as a hike through the lava flows in Hawai’i, a kayaking trip through the Fjords in Alaska or a snorkeling trip through the coral reefs in the Dry Tortugas of Florida.

The virtual tours are available online and in the Google Arts & Culture App which is available for both iOS and Android device platforms.

Blow-Up Building: Inflatable Concert Hall Tours Japan

26 Sep

INflatable concert hall Japan 1

A giant purple bubble will rise from a pile of plastic to bring music, workshops and performance to Japan’s northeastern coast, which was devastated by an earthquake and subsequent tsunami in 2011. A collaboration between British sculptor Anish Kapoor and Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, the Ark Nova is the world’s first inflatable concert hall, and will tour the country for the Lucerne Festival Arknova 2013.

Inflatable Concert Hall Japan 2

Once fully inflated, the coated polyester structure measures nearly 60 feet in height and 115 feet in width. Its first stop is at a park in the town of Matsushima, which suffered serious damage to its many important cultural properties and artistic monuments, and lost thousands of residents.

Inflatable Concert Hall Japan 4

Wood from cedar trees that were damaged by the floods was used to create seating for 500 guests. The structure can easily be deflated, and will travel around the region to host events that organizers hope will help rebuild local culture and spirit.

Inflatable Concert Hall Japan 3

In addition to a range of modern concerts and performances, traditional Japanese culture such as kabuki theater will be celebrated. Children in the affected regions will also perform traditional arts and performances themed on the earthquake disaster.

Video Tours Take You Around the World in Just One Minute

20 Oct

[ By Delana in Global & Travel & Places. ]

Most of us will never have the time or resources to travel all around the world – but for the lucky few who can make that trip, it’s a life-changing experience. “Regular guy” filmmakers Rick Mereki, Tim White and Andrew Lees undertook a grueling trip of 11 countries in 44 days. They filmed everything and later compiled it into three of the most beautiful, interesting short travel films ever made.

By the time they were done, the trio had traveled 38,000 miles and recorded over a terabyte of travel footage. They cut, mixed and stitched the footage together to create three one-minute films. “Move” shows Andrew (the actor of the group) walking in various places around the world.

“Learn” is a rather amazing compilation of the adventurous things the filmmakers learned during their travels. They blow glass, build pizzas, dance, learn to cartwheel in front of the Eiffel Tower, and so many more things that the rest of us only wish we could do in some exotic location.

“Eat” is the final installment in the series, and it is a delicious look at the foods of the world. The guys were clearly a bit daring in their cuisine choices, eating everything from unidentifiable meat to a huge insect. Like the other films, this one inspires an intense wanderlust – so who wants to sponsor our trip around the world?
