Full 360-degree camera rig takes your 3D portrait with 60 DSLRs

Printing in 3D is in the news a lot lately, but applications are usually limited to industrial prototypes. A company called Captured Dimensions has a different use for this technology. They’ve rigged 60 DSLRs in a 360-degree array to capture 3D portraits. The likeness is then printed using a substance containing gypsum powder, resulting in a 3D sculpture of 1/12 to 1/5 scale. Nokia ad takes us inside the new Lumia 1020

Nokia’s new Lumia 1020 smartphone packs some impressive features, most notably a 41MP imaging sensor capable of high-resolution stills and video. A new Nokia advert goes deep (literally) into this aspect of the phone’s hardware with a virtual look inside the imaging pipeline of the 1020, showing the entire process of image capture from the shutter opening and light coming through the lens to the creation of a digital image. Cassini spacecraft takes spectacular pictures of Saturn (oh, and Earth)

Last Friday, while orbiting Saturn, the Cassini spacecraft turned its camera lens on earth from almost a billion miles away. NASA has released the images, which show not only Saturn and its rings, but also the Earth in the (very far) distance. The original ‘raw’ images taken by the spacecraft are grayscale, but astronomy enthusiast Valerie Klavans has converted some of them and added color. The results look pretty spectacular. Photoshop in Real Life: Portrait Series Takes Tools Literally

Anyone who has used Adobe products, Photoshop or otherwise, knows that they have necessarily become quite creative in naming some of their more abstract, surreal and unusual functions.

Flora Borsi of Budapest, Hungary, is a photographer and photo editor who has explored these meanings in return, taking them back out of the digital realm and applying them to ‘real life’ situations.

Through turns of phrase (‘Convert to Smart Object’) and other twisted interpretations, this series of portraits is an exploration of self, exhibition of abilities and simply fun series of mildly manipulated photos.

Her other series show off her capacity to understand and reproduce historical styles, but also to take and subvert visual expectations, in turn silly, serious and in some cases quite macabre.

HTC takes new approach to sensor tech in latest flagship phone

Much ado has been made about the sensor technology rumored to debut along with HTC’s newest handset launched today, the HTC One. While rumors of stacked sensors were predictably wide of the mark, HTC is taking a clever approach to improving camera phone quality by betting on fewer but larger pixels captured by a 4.0MP 1/3″ sensor, which are similar in size to those found in enthusiast compact cameras, and which HTC is calling ‘ultrapixels’. Combined with a fast F2.0 lens and optical image stabilization, the HTC One’s specs hold promise for better low-light photography – an area where mobile phones have fallen notoriously short. Canon PowerShot N takes a different angle – as smartphone side-kick

Canon has announced the PowerShot N, a compact camera designed specifically as a smartphone companion for the Instagram generation. The N is built around a tilting touch-screen, and its round-lens zoom controller and shutter release are designed to make it behave identically whether held right-way-up or upside-down. It offers a ‘Creative Shot’ mode that generates multiple versions of your image, so you get the shot you composed plus five alternatives with different crops and processing effects. Canon promises one-touch Wi-Fi connectivity to make it easier to upload images and video to your smartphone and the internet. To extend its capability beyond that of a smartphone, the N has a 28-224mm equivalent lens and a 12MP CMOS sensor that works with a Digic 5 processor.
