The headline feature of the Panasonic GH4 is that it’s a Micro Four Thirds camera that can shoot 4K video for under $ 2000, capturing either Quad HD (3840 x 2160) at up to 29.97p or ‘Cinema 4K’ (4096 x 2160) at up to 24p. Seattle-based photographer Erik Hecht recently took the new Panasonic GH4 for a spin to test the dynamic range and to see how well it takes color correction. See video

DxOMark Mobile report: Sony Xperia Z2 takes top spot

08 Apr

Sony_Xperia_Z2_.jpg

The Xperia Z2 is Sony’s latest flagship smartphone and replaces the Z1. The full-HD display measures 5.2 inches and offers better viewing angles than its predecessor’s 5-inch equivalent. While a new Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM offer plenty of power, the camera specification is nearly identical to the Z1’s. Images are captured by a 20.7MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor on a F2.0 lens. Nevertheless, Sony has managed to improve the image quality of its new flagship. Learn more

Real Life Photoshop: Giant Eraser Takes Out Urban Scenery

29 Mar

[ By Steph in Art & Street Art & Graffiti. ]

Real Life Photoshop Eraser 1

In another case of Photoshop invading the real world in three dimensions, giant erasers are appearing all over urban surfaces in London. Murals, street signs, billboards and trash bins are among the objects getting the Photoshop treatment with ‘Street Eraser,’ a joint project by artists Guus Ter Beek and Tayfun Sarier.

The installation consists of a series of handmade stickers plastered all over the city, featuring the gray and white checkered pattern that appears when you erase something in Adobe Photoshop.

Photoshop Tools 3

A similar project used cardboard props to recreate the look of a photoshopped image in progress, with the photographer using the eraser tool on himself. Another photographer takes Photoshop tools literally with humorous interpretations of commands like ‘convert to smart object’, ‘smudge’ and ‘puppet warp.’

SkyCycle: London Concept Takes Biking to New Heights

04 Jan

[ By Steph in Architecture & Cities & Urbanism. ]

SkyCycle London Bike Route 1

London could become much more bike-friendly with SkyCycle, an elevated route for bicycles only that runs along the existing rail network and would enable commuters to see the city in a new way. Never mind sitting in your vehicle inhaling exhaust while you’re stuck in traffic, or battling the perpetual jam of vehicles on your bike, which has proven to be a dangerous proposition. 14 cyclists died in traffic accidents in London in 2013 alone.

SkyCycle London Bike Route 4

Designed by Foster + Partners in collaboration with Exterior Architecture and Space Syntax, SkyCycle is a 136-mile route with over 200 entrance points that can accommodate 12,000 cyclists per hour. The fact that the route follows the train system is actually ideal, since the railway lines were built for steam trains and follow contours that avoid steep ups and downs.

SkyCycle London Bike Route 3

The route could speed up treks across the city by up to half an hour by avoiding traffic and taking more direct lines from one busy area to another. If approved, the routes could be in place within 20 years or so.

SkyCycle London Bike Route 2

The High Line in New York City, an elevated pedestrian route built along disused railroad tracks, is a great example of what can happen when a project like this is integrated into a busy city. Not only is the High Line a popular route for foot traffic, it also helped revitalize large swaths of industrial land that wasn’t living up to its potential.

Nat Geo photographer takes the iPhone 5S out shooting (and likes it)

09 Oct

Screen_Shot_2013-10-08_at_11.48.10_AM.png

When National Geographic photographer Jim Richardson ditched his usual DSLR kit and took an iPhone 5S out to the Scottish highlands, he wasn’t sure he was going to get great shots. In the end though, he was surprised by how capable the smartphone’s 8MP camera is. He shared his experiences (and some of his images) at National Geographic’s ‘Proof’ blog and we’ve published extracts over at connect.dpreview.com.
