Canon patent details triple image stabilization system for low-light video recording

Canon has patented a new image stabilization system that utilizes three different technologies to prevent blurry images: lens stabilization, image sensor stabilization and electronic image stabilization. The system would add another layer of movement prevention over Canon’s existing dual image stabilization option that uses both lens and digital stabilization when shooting in video mode.

The patent was first posted on the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s website (USPTO) on June 27. According to the document, Canon’s triple image stabilization system, which uses a combination of lens, sensor and electronic image stabilization technologies, kicks in to prevent slow shutter speed blurs that may otherwise exceed the capabilities of the current Dual IS system.

Canon splits camera shakes into two different categories: low-frequency for slight movements that can be corrected using electronic stabilization and high-frequency for stronger shakes like the vibration from a moving vehicle that can be corrected using optical stabilization.

The patent details a third type of movement Canon called ’accumulated shake’ resulting from low shutter speeds experienced in dim environments. In the case of recording in low-light situations, Canon explains:

…so-called ‘accumulated shake’ may occur, which is a blur occurring in a subject image due to the position at which an optical image is formed being displaced during exposure, and therefore, it may be impossible to acquire a favorable image even if a region that is to be cut out is adjusted.

It appears Canon patented this new system as a potential solution for this problem; the patent explains the system offers ‘favorable shake correction corresponding to the shutter speed.’ Based on the details provided in the patent, Canon may envision future cameras that utilize a detection method for determining when accumulated shake is a problem in order to utilize the triple image stabilization system.

The feature may be used to reduce blurs in videos recorded in low-light settings, but only speculation about Canon’s intentions is possible at this time. As with any patent, Canon may never bring this technology to the consumer market.

Syrp’s Genie Mini II portable motion control system adds USB-C and improved connectivity

Syrp has unveiled Genie Mini II, a sequel to the original pocket-sized camera motion controller introduced in 2016. The second generation model retains the same general design and features as the original, but with the inclusion of USB-C instead of micro USB, Bluetooth 4.2 instead of Bluetooth 4.0, and WiFi.

The Genie Mini II offers the same portable panning functionality as the original, enabling filmmakers to capture smooth motion in real time and photographers to capture time-lapses. The motion control system supports multi-row panorama capture, offers Astro Time-Lapse and HDR modes, and offers an Ease In/Ease Out feature.

The device works with Syrp’s Genie 2 app for Android and iOS offering keyframed motion control in addition to various presets for easily initiating shooting sessions. According to Syrp, the new Bluetooth 4.2 support makes it possible for advanced users to ‘advantage of more complex, custom motion control settings and multi-row panoramas to create 360/VR images.’

The Genie Mini II, which has a total load capacity of 3.9kg (8.8lbs), is designed to sandwich between a tripod and camera. The device is powered by an internal lithium-ion battery capable of powering six hours of continuous smooth panning, an increase from the previous version’s five hours, or up to a 15-hour time-lapse, a noticeable decrease from the original’s 24-hour duration. The new model has a max 360-degree capture speed of 33 seconds.

Syrp has launched the Genie Mini II for pre-order at the same $ 249 price as the original model.

Phase One to introduce multi-frame Raw capture for its IQ4 camera system

Phase One has announced the impending arrival of its first Creative Control Enhancement update for its IQ4 Infinity Platform. The update offers new multi-frame Raw capture capabilities and other new features to improve photographer’s workflows.

At the core of the Creative Control Package update for the IQ4 Infinity Platform is Automated Frame Averaging, a new Raw capture mode that combines multiple frames together to create a final image with better image quality. Similar to Sigma’s Super Fine Detail mode, which shoots and averages seven images, Phase One’s new Automated Frame Averaging function ‘combines multiple sensor readouts during the capture process to reduce noise, strengthen dynamic range and protect highlights.’

Phase One has also updated Capture One Inside (version 12.1), adding new Clarity and HDR options, as well as the ability to create your own Capture One Styles and upload them directly to the IQ4 system. Direct Image Transfer is included in the update as well.

Capture One says the update will be available for download ‘next week’ on its Creative Control Enhancement webpage.

Lensbaby OMNI Creative Filter System uses ‘Effect Wands’ to create in-camera image effects

Lensbaby has launched pre-orders for its new OMNI Creative Filter System, a kit featuring a screw-on Filter Ring for existing lenses, as well as Effect Wands that magnetically attach to the ring in front of the lens. Each Effect Wand is designed to create in-camera photo effects similar to app filters, but with a greater level of control and repeatability.

The OMNI Creative Filter System is available with 58mm and 77mm Filter Ring options, both of which include step-down rings for use with different existing lenses. The system currently features three Effect Wands: Crystal Seahorse, Rainbow Film, and Stretch Glass. Two magnetic mounts, each capable of holding two Effect Wands each, are included with the kit.

The magnetic mounts attach to the Filter Ring, then the Effect Wands attach to the magnetic mounts. The wands can be repositioned by sliding them around the Filter Ring. According to Lensbaby, the kit is designed to work with the majority of prime and zoom lenses, including both auto and manual focus models, plus the company’s own Velvet 56/85 and Burnside 35 lenses.

Ricoh announces minor 1.11 firmware update for its GR III camera system

Ricoh has released firmware version 1.11 for its GR III camera. It’s not a major update, but if you own a GR III, it’s still worth your time to update it.

According to the changelog, firmware version 1.11, an upgrade from 1.10, corrects an issue where playing back a movie on the camera caused the frame rate to drop, as well as an issue where the incorrect firmware was displayed when the GR III was plugged into a macOS computer. Additionally, the update smooths out a number of under-the-hood problems for improved stability.

To update the firmware on your GR III, follow the following steps, as shared by Ricoh:

[1] Provide a formatted SD memory card for the update software. The download file is self-extracting. The following file is extracted. fwdc239b.bin: This is the updated firmware Copy the above Firmware file [fwdc239b.bin] to the root directory in the SD card.
[2] Insert the battery into the camera and confirm the battery is full by battery level indicator then turn the camera off.
[3] Insert the update SD card (prepared in step 1) into the camera and close card cover.
[4] Turn the camera power on while pressing [Menu] button.
[5] [Update the camera firmware] is displayed Select [Execute] by 4-way button and press [OK] button.
[6] The firmware update will start and [Updating] is displayed. *Do not turn OFF the camera while updating.
[7] When update is completed, “Update completed” will be displayed
[8] Turn OFF the camera and remove the SD card from camera. *Confirm the version of firmware with above [How to check version].
[Caution] When updating is finished, the update SD card still contains the Firmware file. If you want to use this card to take pictures, format the card by the camera to delete firmware file first.

Documentary reveals how some Instagram influencers game the system

Dutch public broadcaster VPRO has published a documentary called ‘#followme’ that details the hidden reality behind fake Instagram accounts and how they become popular. The documentary, which was filmed in a vertical orientation for a primarily mobile audience, is around 49 minutes long and available to stream for free on Instagram and YouTube.

The film ‘#followme’ details the big business fueling faux Instagram success, including the sale of followers to make an account appear more popular than it is, the staging of photos and videos designed to look spontaneous, and how motivated users game the platform’s algorithm to climb in rank.

Instagram has faced increased criticism over its alleged role in fear of missing out (FOMO) and other negative mental health effects, including from some influencers who have shed light on the often fake nature of many Instagram accounts. The social network may be planning big changes that address some of these concerns, however. Earlier this month, the company confirmed that it has been testing hidden like counts and that it may introduce the change across the platform.

Video: Hasselblad H6D-100C medium-format camera paired with DIY anamorphic lens system

Through his YouTube channel GxAce, cinematographer Casey Cavanaugh has published a new video showcasing his homemade ‘GX-Pan’ anamorphic lens adapter used with the $ 32k Hasselblad H6D-100C medium-format digital camera.

According to Cavanaugh, Hasselblad saw the video in which he unveiled his DIY anamorphic lens adapter setup and offered to let him test it with the medium-format model. ‘I was absolutely blown away by how much my little anamorphic lens resolved on that 100MP sensor,’ Cavanaugh says in his video. ‘I was honestly worried that it wasn’t going to hold up to that scrutiny of 100MP.’

Cavanaugh explains that in addition to being an anamorphic lens created for a Super 16 projection, the unit also has a persistent fungus problem that has proven difficult to eliminate. In light of that, says Cavanaugh, the ‘insanely sharp’ images produced by the setup were ‘honestly very surprising.’ The demonstration also includes short video clips shot with the system.

Cavanaugh’s previous content includes tips on purchasing a film camera and a short award-winning film on the risks of photo obsession. A selection of his anamorphic still images are available on his website.

OnePlus shares official sample images from OnePlus 7 Pro’s triple camera system

On May 14, Chinese smartphone company OnePlus will officially announce the anticipated OnePlus 7 Pro Android smartphone. Though many details are lacking at this time, the OnePlus 7 Pro previously leaked as featuring a rear three-camera system, something OnePlus confirmed on April 25, 2019. Following that confirmation, OnePlus has shared three official sample images captured with the the triple camera.

OnePlus shared three images captured with the OnePlus 7 Pro via Twitter on April 30. Though the company didn’t provide details on the device, the images seemingly confirm leaks that claim the model will feature both ultra-wide and zoom cameras in addition to the expected 48MP primary camera.

The OnePlus 7 Pro will allegedly feature a Snapdragon 855, 8GB of RAM, USB-C, a single speaker, notch-free display, and complete lack of a headphone jack. Official features will be revealed by OnePlus next month.

Rode’s Wireless GO microphone system claims to be ‘the world’s smallest’

Rode has introduced the Wireless GO, a wireless microphone system that being deemed as ‘the world’s smallest, most versatile’ system of its kind.

Similar to its Wireless Filmmaking Kit, the Wireless GO is a kit that consists of a transmitter (TX) and receiver (RX). The difference is, the Wireless GO TX module works as a standalone microphone thanks to its internal omnidirectional condenser microphone and integrated clip or as a transmission unit for Rode’s lavalier microphone via the onboard 3.5mm TRS input.

The two modules measure in at approximately 44mm x 45mm x 18.5mm and weigh just 31g / 1oz. Wireless connectivity is powered by Rode’s new Series III Digital 2.4GHz transmission technology that’s rated for a maximum distance of 70m / 230ft in clear line-of-sight situations.

The modules include built-in Li-po batteries that are rated for seven hours of use and can be recharged via USB. Speaking of USB, the units can be updated with firmware using the same USB-C port that’s used to charge them.

The Wireless GO microphone kit comes with two fur windshields, one pouch, one USB-A to USB-C cable and one SC2 cable. B&H has the system available to pre-order for $ 199 with an estimated shipping date of April 17, 2019 at the time of posting this article.

Sharp announces it’s officially joining Micro Four Thirds system

Electronics giant Sharp has officially joined the Micro Four Thirds system according to a press release on the Olympus global website. In the statement Sharp is identified as a ‘driving force’ behind 8K imaging, suggesting that the company will use the MFT system for its future camera systems.

Sharp has already shown a Micro Four Thirds prototype 8K camera at this year’s CES show back in January, so this announcement just confirms the company’s direction for the future, saying ‘Sharp will add Micro Four Thirds products to their line-up.’
