New dPS Design Launching Soon

03 Oct

The next 24 hours is an exciting time for the team at dPS as we’re about to show you something we’ve been busily working on for months – our brand new site design.

The brief for our design and development team was huge – we wanted a fresh new look, a more readable design, a better mobile experience, easier ways for readers to share our content, better ways to find the best posts in the archives and more.

Later today we’ll show you what our team came up with (there’s a sneak peak of part of our new front page below). But before we do dPS will be down for several hours for maintenance while we make that switch.

new-dps

dPS will be down for maintenance for several hours beginning at 6am on Thursday in Melbourne Australia (4pm US Eastern time and 9pm London time on Wednesday). Please bear with us during this period – while we hope it’ll be a smooth transition these things do take time and we’ll be sure to have a few little bugs to fix once the site goes live!

While you’re waiting please check in with our Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest accounts for updates and photographic distractions!

The Remarkable Vivian Maier Story [Documentary Coming Soon]

20 Feb

vivian-Maier.jpeg
I love the story of Vivian Maier – a prolific and talented street photographer who who took over 100,000 images over her life yet showed nobody her work.

Her images were only uncovered and purchased by John Maloof in an auction after her storage locker was repossessed shortly before her death.

At the time of buying a box of Vivian’s negatives John didn’t even know the photographers name and had no idea about her talent – however as he began to examine and scan the images he realised he’d stumbled upon an amazing hidden archive of photos.

He tracked down more of her work that others had purchased in the auction and in doing so discovered Vivian’s name and began to also uncover pieces of her story. Viviane – who worked as a nanny – had taken up photography in 1949. She took most of her photos on days off, at first around New York and in Chicago where she moved in 1956.

She continued to shoot right through into the late 1990s but also shot film and recorded audio. When her work was discovered in 2007 there were over 100,000 negatives and many hundreds of rolls of unprocessed film in the collection. John began to scan and collate her work and shared some of it on a blog and later a website dedicated to the project.

In doing so the photography community around the world became aware of this previously undiscovered talent. Exhibitions around the world followed and more recently John started a Kickstarter project to create a documentary about Vivian Maier.

In the last week a Movie trailer for this full feature length documentary was released which tells more of Vivian’s story and the project.

The documentary is expected to be finished later this year and release dates will come soon. Follow more news of the release on Facebook or on the Finding Vivian Maier site.

You might also like to view this earlier video from Chicago tonight which also tells the story.

Coming Soon: Inexpensive Cactus Laser Triggers?

18 Feb

Well this is interesting. Georgia-based photographer Brian Hursey has been testing an advance set of laser “trip-triggers” to be released by Cactus.

These are the types of triggers designed not for syncing but for motion-stopping photography. I.e., when something passes through the laser it trips the flash. They have a variable delay mechanism, and being from Cactus should be reasonably cheap.

For more info, see Brian’s tests, or the Strobist Flickr Group discussion.

16 Oct

dprdxx.jpg

We’re incredibly pleased to announce the imminent return of lens reviews to dpreview thanks to a joint venture with DXO Labs, involving the establishment of a dedicated DxO lens and camera testing facility in Seattle, and the incorporation of DxO test data into dpreview.com’s class-leading lens reviews. We’re currently ironing out the last few bugs in the system, and hope to publish the first review later this week. More after the link…

08 Dec

Sony USA has said the NEX-7 will begin to ship this month to some customers who pre-ordered it, following a halt in production cause by flooding in Thailand in October. Production is still limited but the company says it will ‘aggressively pursue all efforts to restore full capacity’ for the NEX-7 and other affected models (which is thought to include the NEX-5N, A65 and A77).
