The Vertu Constellation is a luxury smartphone with high-end specs, for a change

26 Jan

Vertu is company known for its “handmade in England” luxury smartphones and eye-watering price tags. However, while many Vertu devices easily set you back as much as a decent used car, the specifications tend to be in line with mid-range rather than high-end models.

However, the latest incarnation of the Vertu Constellation, announced today, changes things up. It comes with actual high-end specifications and dual-SIM capability as an added bonus. The  5.5″ QHD AMOLED display is protected by scratch-proof sapphire glass and the Android 6 operating system is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset and 4GB of RAM. Also on board are 128GB of expandable storage, NFC, a USB Type-C port, and a 3,220 mAh battery. Front-facing stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus virtual surround sound processing should provide a good sound experience and all the components have been wrapped up in a hand-crafted shell made from anodized aluminum and finished with leather, ‘sourced from a specialist, family-run tannery in Italy.’

In the camera department the Constellation offers a 12 MP rear camera with 1.55um pixel size which equates to a 1/2.3 sensor. Video recording at 4K is supported but there is no talk of optical image stabilization. No pricing information for the device has been released yet but it’s safe to assume it will be a four-figure US$ number. In case you’re still not sure if this kind of price tag is justified, you should consider Vertu’s 24-hour concierge service is included. On the Constellation it is accessed by pressing a ruby button on the side of the phone. You also get access to iPass, the world’s largest Wi-Fi network. If you want to take your mobile image in style you won’t have to wait too long. The Constellation will be available from February. You can register your interest now on the Vertu website.

HMD Global releases Nokia 6 Android smartphone

11 Jan

HMD Global, the Finnish company that acquired the exclusive Nokia brand licensing rights for mobile phones in late 2016, has released its first model under the legendary Nokia moniker. The Nokia 6 is best described as an upper mid-range device with an unibody that is machined from a solid block of 6000 series aluminum and would not look out of place on a top-end smartphone.

Images can be viewed and displayed on the 5.5” Full-HD IPS LCD display with 2.5D Gorilla Glass and the Android 7 Nougat OS is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset and 4GB of RAM.  The device also features 64GB of expandable storage and dual amplifiers in combination with Dolby’s Atmos surround technology should be capable of delivering excellent sound.

Juho Sarvikas, Chief Product Officer, HMD Global said: “We have set ourselves a mission to deliver the best possible smartphone experience, with a beautiful premium design touch, to everyone, at every price point. By building on true Nokia phone hallmarks of leading design and materials, an obsessive focus on the latest technology and solving real-life issues, we believe we have a unique proposition for consumers. The Nokia 6 marks the first step on our journey, with more to come in 2017.”

In the camera department the Nokia 6 packs a 16MP camera with 1.0 µm pixel size, F2.0 aperture and phase detection AF. The 8MP unit at the front also has an F2.0 aperture and at 1.12 µm slightly larger pixels. Both cameras can record 1080p video at 30 frames per second.

The Nokia 6 will, at least to start with, be exclusively available through JD.com in China and set you back approximately $ 245. On paper at least, the Nokia 6 looks like a very solid device at an attractive price point and a good first step for re-establishing the Nokia brand in the marketplace. That said, we are still hoping to see Nokia’s rumored camera super-phone revealed at MWC at the end of February.

Press Release:

HMD Global launches first smartphone, the Nokia 6 in China

  • Nokia 6 will be available exclusively in China through JD.com. Available in early 2017, Nokia 6 is 1699 CNY
  • New design philosophy embraces much-loved Nokia phone hallmarks of quality, superior craftsmanship and relentless focus on the consumer experience
  • Nokia 6 marks the first step for the Nokia brand into Android smartphones with more to come in H1 2017

Espoo, Finland – 8 January 2017: After securing the exclusive Nokia brand licensing rights in mobile phones in late 2016, HMD Global Oy (“HMD”) is proud to announce the launch of its Nokia 6 smartphone in China. The Nokia 6 marks the first step in HMD’s ambition to set a new standard in design, material quality and manufacturing innovation across every tier of its products by building on the hallmarks of a true Nokia phone experience. The device, which is designed explicitly with the needs of users in mind, combines quality and in-built durability to deliver a real-life premium smartphone experience at a price point for the highly aspirational Chinese consumer.

The decision by HMD to launch its first Android smartphone into China is a reflection of the desire to meet the real world needs of consumers in different markets around the world. With over 552 million smartphone users in China in 2016, a figure that is predicted to grow to more than 593 million users by 20171, it is a strategically important market where premium design and quality is highly valued by consumers.

With the arrival of Nokia 6, consumers will see superior craftsmanship and design quality in action. It takes 55 minutes to machine a single Nokia 6 from a solid block of 6000 series aluminium. It then receives two separate anodising processes, taking over ten hours to complete, with each phone being polished no less than five times. The end result is an aluminium unibody with the highest level of visual and structural quality.

Delivering quality to the core, the Nokia 6 display has a bright hybrid in-cell 5.5” screen with full HD resolution and incredible colour reproduction wrapped in 2.5D Gorilla Glass. The display stack is laminated together with a polarizer layer enabling excellent sunlight readability and slim form. The build is completed with the latest generation Qualcomm Snapdragon™ 430 processor with X6 LTE modem designed for excellent battery life and superior graphics performance.

The Nokia 6 has 4GB RAM and 64GB storage with which to run the latest version of Android Nougat and is packed with entertainment to bring to life the latest that Android has to offer. The dual amplifiers deliver a 6dB louder sound than a regular amp, giving higher voice, deeper bass and unmatched clarity. Dolby Atmos creates powerful, moving audio that seems to flow all around users. The Nokia 6 packs a 16MP phase detection auto focus rear camera for sharp detailed pictures, and an 8MP front camera. The f/2.0 aperture lenses and exclusive camera UI with automatic scene detection make it easy to take great shots every time.

Arto Nummela, CEO, HMD Global said: “Just a short while ago we announced the launch of HMD Global. From the outset we have stated that we intend to move with speed to establish a position as a player in the smartphone category and create products that truly meet consumer needs. The Nokia 6 is a result of listening to our consumers who desire a beautifully crafted handset with exceptional durability, entertainment and display features.

Our ambition is to deliver a premium product, which meets consumer needs at every price point, in every market. We start today, with our premium, high quality Nokia 6; built to deliver a fantastic core user experience for Chinese consumers. We look forward to unveiling further products in the first half of this year.”

Nestor Xu, Vice President Greater China, HMD Global said: “China is the largest and most competitive smartphone market in the world. It is no coincidence that we have chosen to bring our first Android device to China with a long-term partner. JD.com is known for its upwardly mobile customer base and it has for many years believed in the Nokia brand and sold millions of our products to Chinese customers. Launching our first smartphone device, in such a strategically important market, with JD.com a trusted online retailer marks a signal of intent.”

Shengli Hu, President of 3C Business Unit, JD.com, said: “The Nokia 6 marks a new milestone for the iconic brand, and JD.com is proud to work with HMD on this exclusive launch in China. Our 200 million active consumers come to JD.com to shop for guaranteed high-quality products from the world’s leading brands, and we are proud to provide a trusted outlet for them to reconnect with Nokia phones.”

Nokia brand rumored to return with camera-centric smartphone

20 Dec

HMD Global, a Finnish company that has acquired patents and the rights to manufacture Nokia-branded smartphones from Microsoft for the next 10 years, is expected to launch a couple of high-end Android devices at the Mobile World Congress in February and one of them looks like a serious weapon for mobile photographers.

The rumored Nokia C1 is expected to feature a dual camera with 16MP and 12MP modules, a triple-LED flash, laser-assisted AF and, like some famous Nokia smartphones from the past, a real xenon flash. With a Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4GB of RAM, a 3,210 mAh battery and 32, 64, and 128GB storage options, the non-camera-related part of the specification sounds pretty good as well.

A second device is expected to also come with the Snapdragon 835 chipset, 6GB of RAM and a 23MP camera with Zeiss-branded lens, all wrapped up in a metal body. Both devices look appealing but from a photography point of view the C1 is arguably more interesting.

With the 808 and Lumia 1020, Nokia was responsible for two of the best camera smartphones ever made. If the rumors are true the new owners of the brand might be on a good path to making Nokia a favorite of the mobile photography community’s favorites again. We’ll keep our eyes open for the new devices at Mobile World Congress in February.

Vimble S is an intelligent smartphone gimbal with physical camera controls

16 Nov

A Kickstarter project that just launched is aiming to raise funding for production and distribution of the Vimble S smartphone gimbal. The Vimble S is a three-axis motorized image stabilizer that is compatible with a large range of smartphones, including Apple’s iPhone models, the Huawei P9, Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy and other devices with similar dimensions. The gimbal communicates with the phone via a Bluetooth connection and folds down to about 11.2 inches when not in use.

A range of physical controls on the handle allow you to adjust the smartphone camera’s exposure, zoom, focus, and white balance and trigger the shutter. The gimbal’s motor keeps the camera steady, allowing for the recording of smooth video and still image shooting at slow shutter speeds. However, it also gives the Vimble S a number of intelligent functions, which are controlled via a dedicated app. Those include the ability to track faces, allowing for video-selfies, shoot panorama images with automated panning and record time-lapses.

The engineers behind the project say the Vimble S has a battery life of 8 hours and a very quiet motor. The handle is designed to also function as a monopod. With 29 days to go currently, the campaign is a good way to reaching its funding goal. If the feature set sounds like what you have been waiting for, you can secure a Vimble S by pledging $ 179 or more on the Vimble S Kickstarter page. Shipping is planned for January 2017.

Press Release:

Aiming to provide everyone with a professional yet affordable way to shoot high-quality video and images, Vimble S has been expertly designed to produce fantastic content in every situation.

Vimble S perfectly balances smartphones to cancel out unwanted movement in a 3-axis space, counteracting any jarring wobbles or shakes. Its motors are silent too, so not to disturb the footage audio. The handle embraces ergonomic design, with the integrated control panel easily accessible with just one hand, allowing users to easily operate every aspect of the gimbal’s movement and camera settings.

Vimble S also comes with a companion app, ViCam, specifically developed to control each of the smart shooting features available. Create beautiful montages of passing time with a few simple clicks. Automatically centre on your subject with ViCam’s face tracking tool, recording their every movement even if they move out of the camera’s range. Capture the entire scene with the spectacular 180° panoramic mode, smoothly rotating while staying completely level. Users can edit and share photos directly from the app, while keen developers can tinker with the provided SDK to customise features and unlock hidden capabilities. ViCam will be available for iOS and Android.

Rian Cheng, Founder and CEO at DelTron Technology, comments: “Our dream is to bring professional videography into everybody’s daily lives. Sharing our experiences of the world through pictures and video is now second nature, with over 1.8 billion digital images uploaded everyday. Whether posting on Instagram, Facebook or another social channel, we love to share what we see. Vimble S puts the power in your hand to create beautiful visual memories with complete ease.”

Manufactured using high-grade materials, Vimble S is a sturdy and reliable travel companion. The premium device is prepared for rigorous use that any practical camera stabilizer has to go through. Small enough to be tucked away in your bag, it also has a long-lasting battery life of up to 8 hours, besting their closest competitors. Whether filming a trekking tour through a national park, catching that awesome skateboard trick, or gaining self-shooting experience as a videographer, Vimble S allows you to take on the director role with everything you create. The gimbal also opens up a wide range of angles including landscape, portrait and underslung to add variety to your shooting style.

“This isn’t just some fancy selfie stick, the technology we’ve implemented into the Vimble S sets your photo and video content apart from the mundane. Vloggers, extreme sports enthusiasts, travellers or anybody else can use features such as our intelligent face tracking to breathe new life to their videos. It does, of course, take incredible selfies too.” adds Peter Zeng, Co-Founder and CTO at DelTron Technology.

Kodak-branded Ektra smartphone embraces the company’s roots

21 Oct

The Bullitt Group, one of the companies licensing the Kodak brand name, has launched the Kodak Ektra smartphone. Named after Kodak’s 1941 Ektra rangefinder, the phone’s design attempts to mimic the look of a vintage analog camera. The back of the device features a small camera grip and is covered in leatherette. There is also a two-stage shutter-button and optional accessories include a range of retro-style leather pouches and cases.

Despite the camera-centric exterior, underneath the hood the Ektra is smartphone business as usual. The camera comes with a 21MP sensor, F2.0 aperture and optical image stabilization. A 26.5mm equivalent lens is offered, as is PDAF, 4K video and a dual-tone flash. A 13MP camera can be found at the front. The camera app features manual control over most shooting parameters and a wide range of filter effects for both videos and still images.

Other specifications include a 5” 1080p screen, Helio X20 chipset, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage that is expandable via a microSD slot. The 3000mAh battery should provide more than enough juice for a day of shooting. Overall the Kodak Ektra comes with a good mid-range smartphone specification but is mostly about the vintage camera looks. It will be available in the UK this December for £450 (approximately $ 550). There are also plans to make the device available in the US in early 2017.

Samsung officially pulls the plug on its Note 7 smartphone

12 Oct

Samsung Electronics has officially pulled the plug on its troubled Note 7 smartphone after repeated issues with the devices catching fire, including one incident in which a burning phone required the evacuation of a Southwest Airlines jet.

The company initially recalled the Note 7 in September, offering other Samsung phones as loaners until a ‘replacement’ model arrived. Unfortunately, those too started to burn, and after several days of bad press, Samsung once again recommended that users power down their phones and exchange them for another device. Today, what many had been predicting finally happened: Samsung pulled the plug on the Note 7 entirely, stopping all production and marketing of the device.

The Galaxy Note 7 was considered by many to be one of the top Android smartphones and, with a DxO Mobile score of 88, has one of the best cameras, as well.

With the Note 7 now pulled from the market, many owners (this one included) are wondering what to replace it with. (The Google Pixel, LG V20 and, yes, the iPhone 7 Plus are the devices mostly commonly mentioned in online forums.) If you’re in the same boat, we’d love to hear what device you’re considering in the comments below.
