KitSplit is a peer-to-peer rental service for camera equipment

KitSplit is a peer-to-peer rental network for camera gear and is best described as the ‘AirBnB’ of the camera world. Photographers who need equipment at a specific location are put in touch with owners who are willing to rent their gear out, while KitSplit takes care of vetting, insurance and the logistics. The company was founded about a year ago in New York by photographers who were unhappy with equipment rental options and by now has approximately 5000 members, both individuals and companies, and $ 40 million worth of equipment available to rent.

The latter includes not only traditional cameras, but also drones and virtual reality gear. KitSplit says its services have been used by companies such as Condé Nast Entertainment, Hearst and NBC. After rapid growth in the New York area, KitSplit has now launched its first geographical expansion, to the Greater DC area, Philadelphia and Boston.

Social sharing has taken off in recent years, especially in the accommodation and car rental sectors, so it only makes sense to apply the same principles to camera and imaging equipment. The software will automatically check via your smartphone’s Bluetooth that it’s really you before it unlocks your bike, so freeing it takes seconds. The app also offers personalized direction and weather for your commute and ride stats, and the bike has head and tail lights that automatically turn on and off. All electric components are pedal-powered, so there’s no charging required.

Nikon extends service advisory for D750 to include more models

Nikon has announced that the shutter fault in its D750 that it acknowledged in July last year, may be found in cameras from a much wider manufacturing period. Initially it was thought that the issue, in which the shutter occasionally shades part of the image, occurred in cameras produced between October and November 2014. The company has now discovered the same problem in models made from December 2014 to June 2015.

Nikon has promised a free service for all models affected, and an online serial number checker is available for customers to determine whether theirs is one of the models that needs attention.

European customers can check their serial number on the Nikon Europe website, and those in the USA should go to the Nikon USA website. Other region service pages can be found on the Nikon Global website.

In July of 2015, we announced that the shutter in some Nikon D750 digital SLR cameras manufactured in October and November of 2014 does not function normally, sometimes resulting in shading of a portion of images. Since that time, our examination of the issue has clarified the fact that the same issue may occur with D750 cameras manufactured from December, 2014 through June, 2015.
Therefore, any D750 manufactured from October, 2014 through June, 2015 is eligible for inspection and repair of its shutter.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused.

Identifying affected products
To check whether or not your camera is one of those affected by this issue, click Affected Product Serial Numbers below and enter your D750 serial number as instructed. Your camera’s serial number will be checked against those of applicable products. If your camera is one of those affected, instructions for requesting repairs will be displayed. If your camera is not affected by this issue, rest assured that repairs to your camera are not necessary and you may continue using your camera without concern for this issue.

Resolution
Please contact your nearest Nikon service center if you own a Nikon D750 digital SLR camera to which this issue applies. They will keep your camera, and examine and repair the camera’s shutter free of charge, even if the camera’s warranty has expired.

Sony offers free inspection and service for RX1R II ‘light leak’ issue

Sony has posted an advisory on its support website for owners of the Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R II regarding reported ‘light leak’ issues. Those who have experienced photos with ‘unwanted light’ can send the camera to Sony for free inspection and repair if needed.

Only a certain set of cameras are affected, with serial numbers falling between 6310198 and 6311127. If that’s you, Sony can be contacted at 1-239-245-6360 in the US. The company says that this inspection service will be offered through the end of March 2018.

US National Park Service looking for the next Ansel Adams

If your dream job hasn’t come along so far and you fancy yourself as a bit of an Ansel Adams, you could do worse than to pay a visit to the US Government’s employment website. The National Parks Service is looking for a full-time photographer to record the glory of the country’s natural treasures, much as Ansel Adams did on contract to the Department of the Interior in the 1940s. The only hitch is that applicants will be expected to use equipment similar to that used by Adams himself, as the job involves shooting with large format film cameras as well as the latest digital kit. 

You’ll need to be a US citizen, have a driving license and be subjected to a background check, but for your efforts you could earn up to $ 100,000 a year for doing what you love. The job isn’t all wandering around with a big camera and a box of film holders though, as you’ll be expected to make large scale prints, mount exhibitions and help review submissions for the service’s photographic collection. According to the advert, you’ll have to put up with ‘moderate discomfort’ out on location and ‘exposure to weather conditions’.

Keen enthusiasts though will already be familiar and well-experienced in ‘physical exertion such as long periods of standing; walking over rough or rocky surfaces; recurring bending, crouching, or stretching; and recurring lifting of moderately heavy equipment and materials.’

The job advert also specifically asks for the following: 

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of large format, black and white photography.
  • Knowledge of published standards and guidelines for architectural, engineering and landscape documentation.
  • Knowledge of film and digital photographic processes and techniques.

Those demands shouldn’t be too much of an issue for most photographers already working with large format equipment in the field. To apply for the job you’ll need to get moving as applications have to be in by 15th December. Santa might be coming early to someone.

Nikon D750 service advisory warns of shutter issue

Nikon has issued a service advisory regarding the D750, specifically targeting units made in October and November 2014. An issue with the shutter in these units could result in shading in a portion of images taken with the camera. Tamron and Sigma offer firmware update service for Canon EOS 5DS/5DS R live view issues

Tamron and Sigma have both announced updates for their lenses to provide full compatibility with Canon’s EOS 5DS and 5DS R models. Both firmware updates refer to behavior in live view shooting, something that has also caused problems in the Rebel T6s and T6i. This suggests that Canon’s latest models feature a change in the way they drive lenses. Read more

Sigma service notice advises of Canon 750D and 760D Live View issue

Sigma has issued a service notice advising that some of its Canon mount interchangeable lenses cannot be used with Live Mode on the Canon EOS Rebel T6s (760D) and the Canon EOS Rebel T6i (750D). Lens owners will receive a free firmware update to fix the problem, though the company has not provided a timeframe for when the update is expected. Both current and discontinued lens models are affected by this issue. Read more
