[MODIFIED] Google Chrome – Prompt Where to Save Downloaded Files

10 Jun

Have Google Chrome ask you where to save downloaded files instead of placing them in a default location.

By default, Google Chrome places all downloaded files in a “Downloads” directory underneath your main user folder. For example, if your username is “John” and you are running Windows 7, downloads are placed in the folder: C:\Users\John\Downloads.

While many people may find this location acceptable and appreciate Google Chrome downloading files immediately without an added dialog box, power users may wish to be prompted every time a file is to be downloaded. This way you can choose where to place each file, putting movies in one folder, games in another, and utilities in yet another folder, for example….

Microsoft Publisher 2010 – Save AutoRecover Information More or Less Often

28 Sep

If you’re worried about program crashes and power outages, you may want Publisher 2010 to save AutoRecover information more often to reduce the chances of losing work.

By default, Microsoft Publisher 2010 saves AutoRecover information for open publications every 10 minutes. So, if a program / operating system crash or power failure shuts down Publisher before you forget to save your open files, upon restart of the software you may be able to recover some of your editing.

10 minutes may be too long an interval; a theoretical crash 9 minutes and 59 seconds after the latest save or AutoRecover save can cause you to lose a great deal of work. Reducing this interval may cause less work to be lost due to catastrophic failure. On the other hand, you might find it quite annoying that Publisher pauses so often to save the information and decide to increase this interval….

[MODIFIED] Mozilla Firefox – Misc – Ask Where to Save Downloaded Files

02 Sep

Stop saving all files downloaded by Mozilla Firefox in the same folder.

Depending on your Mozilla Firefox configuration, when you download files from the Internet they may automatically be placed in a “Downloads” folder.

However, you might find it more convenient for Firefox to ask where to save each downloaded file so that you can place music in one folder, programs in another, and photos in yet another folder. …

Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 – Stop Asking to Save Ink Annotations!

06 Aug

Prevent PowerPoint 2010 from even asking to save ink annotations after a presentation.

When you give presentations with Microsoft PowerPoint 2010, you might choose to use the Pen or Highlighter tools. These can draw attention to a portion of a slide, draw shapes, write text, etc.

After exiting a presentation, PowerPoint 2010 asks if you want to save these ink annotations. However, if you give the same presentation to multiple audiences, the annotations may only be for the benefit of one group of people and do not need to be kept. So why have PowerPoint ask you this when you can configure an option that automatically discards them?…
