Samsung NX500 firmware upgrade improves autofocus and enhances video features

Samsung has released a firmware update for its NX500 mirrorless camera. Among other things, the update enhances autofocus performance in several areas, increases the 4K video bit rate to 70Mbps, and reads out a larger areas of the sensor for improved 1080/60p video quality. More details

Samsung Galaxy S6 / S6 Edge camera review

Samsung launches rugged Galaxy S6 Active

Samsung has launched a rugged version of its flagship Galaxy S6, the S6 Active. The device is exclusively available from AT&T in the US and has a similar specification to the standard S6. In the camera department the S6 Active comes with the same 16MP resolution on the back and 5MP at the front as the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, but there is no talk of an optical image stabilization system. Nikon 1 J5 and Samsung NX500 added to studio test scene

We’ve just added a pair of compact mirrorless cameras to our studio test scene – the Nikon 1 J5 and Samsung NX500. The J5 brings a 1″-type 20.8MP BSI-CMOS sensor to Nikon’s entry-level mirrorless lineup. The NX500 is Samsung’s scaled down version of its flagship NX1, using the same 28MP APS-C BSI-CMOS sensor. See how each camera performs in our studio scene. Read more

Samsung working on slimmer RWB camera sensors

Photos from a Samsung presentation have emerged online, providing some insight about the company’s upcoming image sensors for mobile devices. It appears Samsung is working on chips that use a RWB (red, white, blue) color filter instead of the conventional RGB pattern. This allegedly improves color fidelity and light sensitivity, allowing for smaller pixels. In turn, this could mean smaller camera modules in future smartphones. Read more

Samsung releases NX1 firmware update, with improvements for both photo and video

Samsung has announced yet another firmware update for its flagship NX1 mirrorless camera. The company has been good about providing useful updates for the NX1, and firmware version 1.30 continues this trend. It includes numerous enhancements for still photos, video, and even Wi-Fi connectivity. Read more

Samsung Galaxy S6 units found to be using different image sensors

When the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge were launched earlier this year there was no talk of the ISOCELL technology previously used by the Galaxy S5’s and Note 4’s in-house image sensors, so it was believed the 16MP 1/2.6 CMOS chip in the S6 was provided by Sony. However, rumors have emerged that in some units Samsung sensors are used instead of the Sony variant, and a company spokesperson has confirmed that different sensors are used. Read more
