Skydio releases sample footage captured with its upcoming Skydio 2 drone

07 Aug

Last month, California-based drone manufacturer Skydio teased a follow up to their premier R1 model. Slated for release this Fall, the company recently updated email subscribers with more details about what they’re calling the ‘Skydio 2,’ presumably for the time being. The reel, above, demonstrates some of the new drone’s capabilities including the ability to navigate and fly through numerous obstacles, track subjects, and even perform a 360° spin.

Besides being able to fly autonomously and avoid obstacles, the ‘Skydio 2’ will also boast a breakthrough algorithm that can determine ‘where and how to fly to get the most stunning cinematic shots possible.’ Perhaps this ability was referenced in the second frame as the ‘Skydio 2’ gradually pulled away from a single beachgoer to reveal a stunning tropical island.

With the R1, Skydio positioned itself as a drone maker for consumers and enthusiasts. Using Nvidia’s onboard computer, the same technology that powers self-driving cars, the R1 can map it surroundings, avoid obstacles in every direction and track a single subject. Remote pilots can launch and fly effortlessly with this built-in technology.

Now, with the ‘Skydio 2,’ the focus has shifted to quality cinematography. A redesigned camera promises polished, professional-grade video. This, alone, makes it a huge improvement from its predecessor. If they offer it up in a compact, light-weight frame with increased battery life, they’ll have created the consumer-grade drone to beat.

Canon’s RF mount is still in its infancy, but that’s not stopping the brand from flexing some muscle and releasing the ultra-fast, ultra-pricey 85mm F1.2L – a lens that arguably doesn’t yet have a sensible camera to attach it to. Nonetheless, as you can see from our sample gallery, it offers jaw-dropping performance.

Samyang XP / Rokinon SP 35mm F1.2 sample gallery

Ultra fast and ultra heavy, the Samyang XP / Rokinon SP 35mm F1.2 is one serious lens. The focusing ring is huge and well-damped for incredibly smooth operation, and it’s one of only a handful of 35mm F1.2 lenses on the market that will cover a full-frame sensor. It also comes with full electronic contacts, so aperture is controlled from the camera and metadata is intact (and it works perfectly with Canon’s RF adapter and a Metabones adapter on Sony).

Is it perfect wide-open? No, but it’s darn good. From portraits to landscapes, take a look through our sample gallery to see what F1.2 could do for you.

Panasonic Lumix S 24-105mm F4 Macro OIS sample gallery

The Lumix S 24-105mm F4 Macro OIS is Panasonic’s standard zoom and kit lens for L-mount cameras including the Lumix DC-S1R and Lumix DC-S1. We’ve been using this lens a lot lately, and though it doesn’t carry the ‘Pro’ designation like Panasonic’s other two L-mount lenses, it’s still a solid performer. Let us know if you feel the same in the comments below.

A sample image from Samsung’s 64MP Quad-Bayer sensor has appeared online

25 Jun

In May, Samsung launched its 64MP Tetracell image sensor for use in smartphone cameras. Like the 48MP Sony equivalent that’s already inside several current flagship devices, the Isocell Bright GW1 is designed to produce full-resolution output in good light conditions and use its Tetracell technology to combine four pixels into one, for better detail, lower noise levels and increased dynamic range, in more challenging circumstances.

Like Sony’s Quad Bayer technology, Tetracell appears to duplicate the Bayer color filter pattern over groups of four pixels at a time, making it easy to combine their data for a lower-resolution, lower-noise image. On a device equipped with the Samsung sensor, this would result in 16MP images vs. 12MP files from the Sony sensor.

Samsung has even come up with the name ‘re-mosaic algorithm’ for the process of reconstructing a full-resolution image in well-lit conditions.

Now we are seeing the first sample image captured with the new Samsung sensor:

According to mobile industry ‘leaker’ Ice Universe, the 64MP sensor will not only be available in Samsung phones. This first sample image was captured by an unreleased Realme device, according to the tweet. Budget smartphone manufacturer Redmi (a sub-brand of Xiaomi) is also interested in the sensor, according to the same Tweet.

A higher-resolution version (4096 x 3072px) of the image has also been shared (h/t eno2). We are looking forward to testing the first production devices with the Samsung Isocell Bright GW1 sensor and comparing its image output against the Sony-equipped high-end rivals.

Update (June 24, 2019): Added a link to a higher-resolution version of the image.

We’ve been hard at work on our Panasonic S1 and S1R camera reviews, and over the course of testing have had an enormous amount of time to gather samples with the Panasonic S Pro 50mm F1.4. Launched alongside the aforementioned cameras, this lens has become a staff favorite thanks to its stunningly sharp results. Have a look for yourself.

It’s no secret that Sony aspires to dominate in the pro sports photography market, and this new stabilized 600mm F4 is about as professional as it gets. It’s well-built, fast-to-focus, weather-sealed and lighter than any other 600mm in its class (albeit barely).

While 600mm may not be a focal length we shoot at very often, we definitely walked away impressed after putting it through its paces at a Sony-sponsored event.

Sony’s flagship mobile device packs some powerful imaging features, including a rear triple-cam, Eye AF and 4K HDR video recording. It seems like a natural place to find sophisticated autofocus and video capture features given its pedigree, and we were eager to take it for a spin when it arrived in the office. Take a look at how we got along.

Kamlan has just launched the second version of its 50mm F1.1 lens for cameras with APS-C sensors, and we’ve been able to shoot with a sample copy to get an idea of how it performs.

Designed with Fujifilm, Sony, Micro Four Thirds and EOS M mounts in mind, this all-metal lens is all-manual and offers plenty of background blur when you want it, at an equivalent focal length of 75mm on the Sony a6500 we tested it on.

To get more info on the Kamlan 50mm F1.1 II lens, including availability and pricing, check out their Kickstarter.
