Japanese rumor site Nokishita has published images it claims are of the forthcoming, as yet unannounced, Samyang AF 24mm F2.8 lens for the Sony E mount. If accurate, the lens will look very similar to the company’s existing AF 35mm F2.8, and will share its 49mm filter thread.

The lens in the leaked images is marked with a closest focus distance of 0.24m/0.79ft, and features a rubberized close-ribbed focus ring.

There is no word at the moment from Samyang regarding when this lens will appear.

iPhone 8 front camera rumored to capture 3D images

22 Feb

Last week it was reported that Apple might be replacing the Touch ID fingerprint reader with 3D facial recognition on the top-of-the-line model of the upcoming iPhone 8 series. Now these rumors have become more substantiated by another report by Apple analyst KGI Ming-Chi Kuo which has been published today and obtained by 9to5Mac.

According to the report, the upcoming iPhone top model, which is also expected to feature an OLED display, will come with a technology that combines 2D images captured by the front camera with depth data from an infrared module to record 3D information. The application for this new front camera technology could include facial recognition, iris recognition, and 3D selfies. It could also be used in innovative games that allow for replacing a 3D-avatar’s head with the head of the phone’s user or for augmented reality purposes.

If the report is correct, the infrared transmitter will use vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser technology from a company called Lumentum and the IR receiver will be manufactured by Foxconn/Sharp. The front camera will be supplied by Sony. The hardware will be controlled by algorithms developed by PrimeSense, a company that Apple acquired in 2013. The system works by emitting invisible IR light and then detecting the signals that are reflected by objects in the proximity using a 1.4 megapixel IR receiver. The resulting system will have much more advanced depth-sensing capabilities than the existing iPhone 7 Plus dual rear camera that uses the optical parallax offset of its two lenses to determine the distance to objects in the scene.

As usual, there is no guarantee the rumored feature will actually materialize in the final product. That said, it certainly looks as if Apple is preparing something special for its 2017 iPhone generation. Unfortunately, another rumor is saying the flagship model might set you back upwards of $ 1000.

Samsung virtual assistant rumored to use camera for object identification

21 Jan

In its upcoming flagship smartphone Galaxy S8 Samsung is expected to implement a Siri or Google Assistant style virtual assistant named Bixby. According to sources of SamMobile, Bixby will include visual search capabilities and be able to analyze a photograph and identify objects within the frame. The system will also perform optical character recognition on visible text. Users will be able to launch the service via the camera app or a dedicated button on the side of the device.

We have seen apps with similar functionalities before, for example Google Goggles, but Bixby is reportedly aiming to take things to the next level by offering a higher degree of interchange with other applications installed on the phone. For example, users will be able to use detected objects or text to order on shopping apps or perform searches.

The Bixby technology is likely to have come from Viv Labs, a startup created by former Apple employees and Siri co-founders Dag Kittlaus, Adam Cheyer, and Chris Bringham. Viv Labs was acquired by Samsung last October. It’s not quite clear at this point when the Galaxy S8 will be revealed to the public. It could be at the Mobile World Congress at the end of February or on a dedicated event as late as April. In any case, we’re looking forward to the camera being used in innovative ways on the new Samsung.

Apple rumored to work on 5-inch iPhone with vertical dual-cam

28 Dec

According to the Japanese blog Mac Okatara, Apple might introduce a new smartphone model in 2017 with a 5″ display to slot in between the existing 4.7″ and 5.5″ variants. The report, which originates from a Taiwanese supplier, also says the new mid-size iPhone would use an iPhone 7 Plus-like dual-camera, albeit with a vertical lens alignment rather than a horizontal one.

This rumor is in line with multiple other reports which have stated that in 2017 Apple will launch three rather than two new iPhone models. Alongside updated versions of the current models with 4.7″ and 5.5″ LCD displays, a new premium model with OLED display technology is expected. This device could also feature Apple’s dual-camera technology.

As always, this kind of rumor is best taken with a pinch of salt but we were quite impressed with the iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera in our full review and would love to see the technology integrated into a smaller form factor. We should know more by September 2017.

Nokia brand rumored to return with camera-centric smartphone

20 Dec

HMD Global, a Finnish company that has acquired patents and the rights to manufacture Nokia-branded smartphones from Microsoft for the next 10 years, is expected to launch a couple of high-end Android devices at the Mobile World Congress in February and one of them looks like a serious weapon for mobile photographers.

The rumored Nokia C1 is expected to feature a dual camera with 16MP and 12MP modules, a triple-LED flash, laser-assisted AF and, like some famous Nokia smartphones from the past, a real xenon flash. With a Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4GB of RAM, a 3,210 mAh battery and 32, 64, and 128GB storage options, the non-camera-related part of the specification sounds pretty good as well.

A second device is expected to also come with the Snapdragon 835 chipset, 6GB of RAM and a 23MP camera with Zeiss-branded lens, all wrapped up in a metal body. Both devices look appealing but from a photography point of view the C1 is arguably more interesting.

With the 808 and Lumia 1020, Nokia was responsible for two of the best camera smartphones ever made. If the rumors are true the new owners of the brand might be on a good path to making Nokia a favorite of the mobile photography community’s favorites again. We’ll keep our eyes open for the new devices at Mobile World Congress in February.

Leica-branded instant camera rumored to launch soon

15 Sep
via Leica Rumors

Leica might be set to announce its own version of one of Fuji’s instant print cameras in what looks like another re-badging exercise. The Leica Sofort (‘instant’ in German) camera was unofficially announced in the company’s Leica Fotografie International magazine, but isn’t due to be formally released until tomorrow – according to Leica Rumors. The camera appears to be a redesigned Fujifilm Instax mini 90 as it shares the same basic shape and lens, and it takes Fujifilm’s Instax mini film. Leica looks to have slightly altered the buttons and added some minor details, and has named the 34mm equivalent lens Automatik-Hektor 1:12.7/60mm.

Leica will also reportedly introduce its own range of color and black and white films to go with the camera, which will almost certainly be repackaged Fujifilm materials. Fuji’s own film will also fit the Sofort.

Leica rumors expects the camera to cost €279 (approx. $ 310) with a choice of three colors. The Fuji Instax mini 90 costs €150/$ 150.

Hasselblad rumored to be working on 10x zoom camera module for Moto Z phones

05 Aug

The Lenovo Moto Z and Moto Z Force smartphones have a unique feature: they accept accessory modules, so-called Moto Mods, which attach to their back plates magnetically and via 16 connection pins. At launch, Lenovo showed the InstaShare projector, a JBL Soundboost 6 Watt speaker and a 2220 mAh battery pack, but unfortunately the previously rumored camera module did not materialize.

However, now hellomotoHK found information on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo that might indicate that Hasselblad is working on a Moto Z camera module with, a 10x zoom lens, physical shutter button and zoom lever, Xenon flash and Raw capability. Unfortunately, no information on sensor size and resolution has been provided.

With Raw capture, optical image stabilization and 13 and 21MP sensors respectively the Moto Z and Z Force are well-equipped in the camera department, but a 10x zoom lens with a potentially larger sensor than in the smartphone camera modules would definitely expand the creative potential of the devices. It’s impossible to know how much truth is in this rumor, especially given that the image is just a rendering, but we certainly hope Hasselblad and Lenovo will let us know soon.

Dual-cam Duel: Sony and LG Innotek rumored to be competing for Apple orders

28 May

Judging by the number of rumors buzzing around the internet it seems almost certain that at least one version of the upcoming iPhone 7 will come with a dual-camera setup. Word on the street until now has been that in addition to the standard model Apple is planning to offer a premium version of the larger ‘Plus’ model with a dual-cam designed by Linx, an optical engineering company that was bought by Apple last year.

According to new information this might be, at least partly, incorrect. Financial publication Barron’s quotes Citi Research in saying that all 5.5-inch iPhone models coming this fall will have dual-cameras on the back, not just a premium model.

Barron’s also quotes Chris Chan of Asia-based financial services group Nomura:

‘We think Sony may not be able to deliver its full share of dual cameras to Apple due to: (1) lower-than-expected yield, and (2) damage to its production facility from the April earthquake in Kumamoto. As a result, we think LGI will gain majority share of the initial dual camera orders from Apple…’

Looking at the amount of information out in the open there is almost no doubt that whatever the manufacturer of the modules, we’ll have a dual-cam iPhone to play with in September. The question is if the dual-lenses will be used for optical zooming, as on the LG G5, or to enhance image quality and simulate a shallow depth-of-field, as we’ve seen in the Huawei P9.  We’ll only have to wait a few more months to find out…
