Rumor: Nikon’s full-frame mirrorless will sport an all new ‘Z-Mount’

Nikon Rumors has gotten wind of a very interesting bit of plausible speculation—at this point, we’re not comfortable calling it any more than that. According to the rumor site, the Nikon full-frame mirrorless people are hoping and praying for will sport an all-new so-called “Z-Mount”.

The name is probably still not final at this stage, but NR is reporting with some confidence that the Z-Mount will have an external diameter of 49mm and a flange focal distance of 16mm.

We obviously can’t know if these numbers represent a real mount in the works at Nikon, but we can confirm that the numbers add up. While 16mm is very short, if you have a camera with a wide enough diameter it kind of doesn’t matter. The back of the lens could be further forward than 16mm, so long as the mount doesn’t intrude.

For comparison’s sake, Sony’s E-Mount (the shortest to be used with a full frame sensor) sports an external diameter of 46.1mm and a flange distance of 18mm.

As always, we have contacted a Nikon representative for comment, and will update this post if and when we hear anything official from Nikon USA.

Rumor has it: Galaxy S8 to come with dual-cam, iPhone 7 won’t have one

21 Jun

Another week, another dual-camera rumor. According to Chinese sources the Samsung Galaxy S8, which is expected to launch in early 2017, will come with a UHD screen for better performance with virtual reality applications. That would make it only the second device from a major manufacturer to feature such a high screen resolution, after the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium. The same sources say the S8 will also come with a dual-camera setup that will be made by Samsung subsidiary SEMCO. Apparently, this move is a reaction to the possible inclusion of a dual-camera in at least one version of the upcoming Apple iPhone 7 series, expected to launch in September this year.

But the plot thickens! If another rumor is to be trusted, there won’t actually be any dual-cam iPhone 7 models this year. It appears an anonymous employee of Apple’s production contractor Foxconn has said that plans for a dual-cam iPhone 7 Plus have been cancelled due to ‘immature technology.’ There is also a possibility that sensor maker Sony would not be able to provide the required number of sensors due to yield issues and production lines that have been damaged by a recent earthquake.

It would certainly be interesting to see Samsung’s and Apple’s take on this new type of camera design but we’ll have to wait at least another few months before we’ll find out what, if anything, they can come up with. In the meantime you can have a closer look at the LG G5 and Huawei P9 which both have dual-cam modules and are available for purchase already.

Rumor: Sony might bring curved-sensor technology to smartphone

23 Jul

Sony could be working on a phablet targeted at enthusiast photographers, based around its new curved Exmor-RS IMX271SMK sensor unit and an F1.2 lens. According to a post on Chinese forum digi-wo.com the Xperia Z3X’s Android L OS will be powered by a 64bit Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC that is clocked at 2.86 GHz and 4GB of RAM. The screen is rumored to measure 6.14 inches, offering a QHD resolution and will use OLED technology. Read more on connect.dpreview.com
