LaCie has introduced a new Rugged Thunderbolt external drive, updating its lineup with a 1TB SSD. This is double the previous Rugged drive’s 500GB capacity, and is coupled with a rugged external housing able to withstand water exposure, shock, and dust. The inclusion of a Thunderbolt connection, meanwhile, enables fast transfer speeds compared to typical external hard drive speeds. Read more

Nikon has just refreshed its rugged camera lineup with the Coolpix AW130 and budget-friendly S33. The AW130 sports a 16MP CMOS sensor, 24-120mm equivalent zoom range, a 3” 920k dot OLED, 1080/30p video capture, Wi-Fi/NFC and built-in GPS. Ricoh WG-5 GPS updates rugged series
Ricoh has introduced the WG-5 GPS, the latest in its line of rugged compacts. It exceeds its predecessor’s shockproof rating of 2m to 2.2m, and maintains its other rugged specs including -10C/+14F degree freezeproof rating, 14m/45 ft waterproof capability and 100kgf/220lbf crushproof rating. The WG-5 uses a 16MP BSI CMOS sensor, a 25-100mm equivalent zoom lens and as its name suggests, built-in GPS. Read more

Olympus Stylus Tough TG-860 updates rugged series
Olympus has refreshed its rugged compact series with the Stylus Tough TG-860. It offers a 16MP BSI-CMOS sensor and is capable of diving to greater depths than its predecessor, the TG-850 iHS, as it’s waterproof to 15m/50 ft (compared to 10m/33ft). Fujifilm announces new rugged and long zoom compacts
Fujifilm has announced several new fixed lens compacts including the FinePix S9900W, S9800 and the rugged XP80. The S9900W and S9800 both offer 24-1200mm equivalent zoom lenses and 5-axis image stabilization (for video only), though only the S9900W offers built-in Wi-Fi. The XP80 dives deeper than its XP70 predecessor, improving on its 10m/33ft maximum depth up to 15m/50ft. Read more.

G-Technology launches new G-DRIVE ev rugged portable storage with all-terrain-cases
Digital storage brand G-Technology has announced a collection of new portable hard drives designed to survive in difficult environments. The two available G-DRIVE ev models, equipped with Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 connections, will come housed in what the company calls an ATC – All-Terrain-Case – said to be able to withstand a 2m/6.5 ft drop onto a carpeted concrete floor. The ATC is also water-tight and will float should the drive fall into a body of water, and can also be removed to house other drives in the G-Technology Evolution Series. Read more

Panasonic offers up pair of slightly updated rugged cameras
Panasonic has released a pair of rugged cameras that have very small changes compared to their predecessors. The top-end model is the Lumix DMC-TS6 (FT6 outside of the US), which offers minor cosmetic changes versus the TS5.
