77% of dPS Readers Take A Camera Everywhere [POLL Results]

18 Jun

Last month we asked readers whether they took their camera with them everywhere in a poll. The results are in!

Screen Shot 2013 06 17 at 12 47 40 PM

If you include the camera in your phone… 77% of the almost 20,000 people who responded take a camera with them everywhere.

What I find interesting is that we ran this exact same poll in January 2009 so we can track how things have changed over the last 4 years among our readers. Here are the 2009 results (the results were from around 18,000 readers at that time).

Screen Shot 2013 06 17 at 12 47 22 PM

While the changes have only been subtle there are a few interesting observations to make.

Firstly – more people are relying upon the cameras in their phones to capture their everyday events. This is no wonder – back in 2009 the iPhone had been out for a couple of years but since then the camera in iPhone (and other phones) have improved significantly (in fact a segment of our readership ONLY use camera phones).

Secondly the rise in camera phone use has come at the expense of compact camera solutions and those who only took cameras on special occasions.

What surprised me most was the slight rise in those taking DSLRS everywhere because there’s been such a push of late from camera manufacturers to improve their offerings in the compact camera space.

How have your camera usage habits chanced in the last 4 years?

How Many dPS Readers Have Had Photography Training? POLL RESULTS

07 May

Last week on dPS our reader poll asked readers if they’d ever done any kind of photography training (a class or course). The results from over 66,000 readers are in and interestingly over 60% of us have never done any formal training (whether it be online or offline).

Photography courses

Those of you who have done some training – what was it and how did you find it?

Those of you who have never done any training – where did you learn? Was it just through practice, magazines, websites, friends, books… or something else?

This is a simple product unboxing/review/test of the Yongnuo RF-603 N3 2.4GHz Wireless Flash Trigger/Wireless Shutter Release Transceiver Kit. This is the Nikon version they do make them for Canon. *****Update***** I just got a set of the Yongnuo RF-603 N1 that is for the Nikon pro line up to see if the transceiver where the same and work as only flash triggers for additional flashes and yes they are the same. So if you are looking for ONLY the flash trigger part the N1 version will work as well. (all of the Yongnuo RF-603 will work the on what ever camera you need them to the only difference in the version is the cable for the Wireless Shutter Release) I also tested the flash trigger with my old D70 and it works perfectly as well it even works at 500/sec sync speed that it is capable of. Lens reviews return: results and methodology explained

31 Oct

lensreviews.png

We’re delighted to be able to announce the re-introduction of lens reviews. In partnership with DxO Labs, we’ve re-developed the way the data is collected and how it’s presented, so we’ve prepared an extensive guide to our testing methodology and the revised lens widget. The collaboration with DxO means we’ll be able to provide data for more lenses than previously possible, so have a read to see what those results mean and how they were achieved.

[MODIFIED] Google Search Engine – Automatically Open Results in a New Tab or Window

02 Aug

Save time browsing Google results by opening websites in a new tab or window, keeping the search results visible.

As mentioned in a previous MalekTip, if you open Google results in a new browser tab or window, you can more easily return to your search results without having to use the “Back” button or re-enter your search query. However, this requires you remembering to manually do so every time. If you wish, you can have Google automatically perform this task for you:

(Note this tip was updated on 7/29/2012, and Google’s interface is subject to change.)…

How to set your SONY D-SLR for optimum results

19 Feb

Gary Fong, a professional photographer for 20 years, and inventor of the Lightsphere Flash Diffuser, explains how to take your camera off of fully automatic, while keeping safety and creativity to a maximum by adjusting the camera settings. These settings greatly increase consistently correct images, yet give the photographer the ability to have creative control over contrast, ambient light during flash, and more selective focus when outdoors. Intended for photographers from beginning to advanced event photographers. To see my light modifiers, please visit my website at www.garyfong.com

Bing Search Engine – Return More Desirable Search Results by Adding Ignore Words

02 Sep

Tired of web pages containing particular words or phrases appearing in a Bing search? Create search queries that ignore them.

When performing searches with Bing involving words or phrases that have multiple meanings, you might wish to prevent the results from including certain types of pages. Perhaps a word or phrase has a popular meaning but you want pages related to the alternate one.

Another example is searching for a word or phrase that matches the name of a TV show, sports team, movie, etc. These popular culture references may result in pages in which you have no interest. For example, searching for “bones” may show results relating to the TV show, restaurants, a movie, or other non-anatomical subjects….
