Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM ‘Art’ lab test report

18 Apr

lensreview-thingsmall1.png

The Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM ‘Art’ is a fast normal prime for full frame cameras, with an unusually complex optical design. Its premium price tag of $ 950 / £850 makes it substantially more expensive than either its predecessor, or Canon and Nikon’s 50mm F1.4 lenses. However Sigma’s recent high-end offerings such as the 35mm F1.4 DG HSM and 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM have been truly excellent, so how does the new 50mm measure up? See the lens test data and our analysis

DxOMark Mobile report: Sony Xperia Z2 takes top spot

08 Apr

Sony_Xperia_Z2_.jpg

The Xperia Z2 is Sony’s latest flagship smartphone and replaces the Z1. The full-HD display measures 5.2 inches and offers better viewing angles than its predecessor’s 5-inch equivalent. While a new Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM offer plenty of power, the camera specification is nearly identical to the Z1’s. Images are captured by a 20.7MP 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor on a F2.0 lens. Nevertheless, Sony has managed to improve the image quality of its new flagship. Learn more

18 March, 2014 – WPPI Trade Show Report

19 Mar

There has been a lot of announcements by manufacturers in the last few months and a few more to come soon.  The Luminous-Landscape team of Kevin and Chris recently headed to Las Vegas to visit the Trade Show at the WPPI Convention.  They visited a number of manufacturers’ booths and caught up on some of the latest information.  Their report with video interviews of the Trade Show at WPPI is now available.

On Monday March 18th,  X-rite released ColorTRUE a new app that calibrates your portable devices.  It’s very easy to use and is a glimpse into how all our devices will be calibrated to showing the same image accurately no matter what device.  We’ll be reporting more on this app and its uses in the near future.

You can win an all-expenses paid photographic expedition to Antarctica, along with air fare from anywhere in the world. The value of this prize is $ 15,000.

The Luminous Landscape wants you to try any of our more than 60 training or travel videos and our new free video player. Each purchase is an entry, and an annual subscription that includes all previous as well as new videos counts as six entries. The winner of a free lifetime subscription is also chosen from each month’s entries.

The Sony FE 35mm F2.8 ZA Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* is one of the first lenses for Sony’s fledgling full frame mirrorless system, offering a classic moderate wideangle view. It’s a small lens that nicely complements the Alpha 7 and 7R, but at around $ 800 / £680 it’s distinctly pricey for a relatively slow prime. So is it worth the money?
