Photokina 2014: Samsung stand report

20 Sep

Samsung’s hall is a far cry from the over-the-top extravaganza that is its CES booth. There are big tables for every camera it produces, usually paired with smartphones. In fact, it felt like their stand was as much about mobile devices as it was with cameras. The camera that everyone was playing with was the NX1, and we took a look at that as well as a 300mm telephoto prime concept. Click through to read more.

Photokina 2014: Olympus stand report

20 Sep

The Olympus booth was relatively quiet compared to the madhouses at Nikon and Canons’ stands, which made it easier to get up close and personal with the company’s new lenses. We also took a look at some of their recent cameras, and have a few cutaways, as well. Read more.

19, September, 2014 – Photokina 2014 Report Days 2 & 3

19 Sep

Photokina has been running for three days now.  Today we publish our Photokina Report For Days 2 and 3.  We have some very good video interviews but for the time being we are not able to include them in the report due to poor internet connections and several failed uploads.  We will keep trying to get these uploaded.  Worst case they may have to wait until Monday when Michael returns home.  We have one more day at the show and on Friday we will visit Samsung and a few others.  Also we will be doing a Michael and Kevin’s recap of Photokina. Please check back.

Photokina 2014: Ricoh stand report

18 Sep

Behind Nikon’s Photokina 2014 stand is the Ricoh booth, the most colorful we’ve seen thus far. It’s not the design of the booth that’s colorful. Rather, it’s the dozens of color combinations available for the company’s DSLRs and mirrorless cameras. The waterfall in front was pretty cool, too. Take the tour.

16 September, 2014 – Photokina 2014 Report – Day 1

17 Sep

Every two years the world’s largest photographic trade show takes place in Cologne, Germany. This year Michael and Kevin are in attendance and will be reporting on those things that they saw of greatest interest to them, and hopefully to you as well.

We will not be reporting on many mainstream items for two main reasons. One, they are being covered very well elsewhere, and two, for the most part that aren’t that exciting – al least not to us.

Click here for our first day report, images and video coverage.

Our friend, Sean Reid of Reidreviews, a subscription site, has just published the web’s first in-depth review of the new Leica X.

Photokina 2014: Nikon stand report

16 Sep

We swung by Nikon’s Photokina 2014 stand to see the new D750 in action and investigate what else they have in store for show attendees. The booth itself is a bit less flashy than some of the competitions, and distinctly lacking in cars and ladies wearing sequins, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t make an impression.

Photokina 2014: Canon stand report

16 Sep

Canon’s Photokina stand is popular as always. The company is eager to show off its EOS 7D Mark II to Photokina attendees, and the public in turn turned out to give the camera a try judging by the crowds at the booth. We took our turn handling the 7D II and checked out the booth.

DxOMark Mobile Report added to our HTC One M8 review

26 Aug

With top-notch hardware and plenty of imaging features, the HTC One M8 presents a lot to like as a mobile photography tool. Unfortunately, its 4 megapixel camera just can’t keep up with other flagship phones and we were underwhelmed by its image quality when we reviewed it. Our collaborators at DxO have put the One M8 through their usual round of mobile imaging tests. See how it scored

Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD lab test report

29 Jun

The Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD is one of a select group of supertelephoto zooms for full frame SLRs that reaches or exceeds 400mm focal length, while still being reasonably portable. Its trump card over its closest competition lies in its longer focal length – at 600mm full zoom, it’ll let you get your subjects that bit larger in the frame. But does this result in an unacceptable compromise in optical quality? See the lens test data and our analysis
