We’ve had a pre-production example in the office for a couple of days and have prepared a hands-on preview, to which we’ll add a samples gallery when the promised production example arrives.

Just updated: Canon EOS 5D Mark III preview with real world samples

25 Mar

We’ve updated our Canon EOS 5D Mark III preview with a selection of real world samples images and more detailed descriptions of the camera’s behavior. We’ve shot a range of subjects under different lighting types and light levels to see how the latest 22MP performs. These shots were taken using a pre-production camera running final firmware, so may not be 100% representative of final image quality (though Canon allowing us to publish them suggests they’re not far off). We’re expecting a production-standard camera and will be adding studio test shots next week.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III hands-on preview and video

04 Mar

preview.png

We’ve had a chance to handle Canon’s EOS 5D Mark III 22MP HD DSLR and have prepared a detailed preview and video. The specifications may initially look a little familiar but almost every component has been updated or improved. It gains most of its ergonomics from the EOS 7D but inherits the sophisticated 61-point AF system from the EOS-1D X. It also comes with a range of movie-focused features and promises of a 2-stop improvement in low-light performance. The camera will be available from the end of March 2012. Click here to find out more.

Canon G1 X preview updated, ISO samples added, gallery to come

17 Jan

G1X.jpg

We’ve spent a bit more time with the Canon PowerShot G1 X, and will be publishing a samples gallery from a pre-production camera in the near future. In the meantime, we’ve taken the chance to expand our preview based on our further experience and some real-world shooting with the camera. This includes observations about its behavior and a chart showing the camera’s maximum aperture at key focal lengths. If you have any burning questions about the camera’s behavior, write a comment and we’ll do our best to answer when we publish our samples gallery (but do please read the updated preview first, to see if the answer’s there). [Updated with studio images at all ISO settings – with real world shots coming on Monday]

Preview: Canon PowerShot G1X large sensor zoom compact

10 Jan

canon_g1x.png

Just Posted: Our hands-on preview of the Canon G1 X large sensor zoom compact. Canon is swimming against the tide somewhat with the G1 X – a camera that embraces the large-sensors used by most mirrorless cameras, but foregoing the interchangeable lenses to create a relatively compact all-rounder. The camera combines a 28-112mm equivalent, F2.8-5.8 stabilized zoom with a 14MP sensor just a fraction smaller than those in Canon’s DSLRs. Could this be the photographers’ compact that we always wanted the G series to be? Read our preview to find out.

Preview: Fujifilm X-Pro1 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera

10 Jan

fujifilm_xpro1.png

Just Posted: Our preview of the Fujifilm X-Pro1 and Fujifilm’s X system lenses. The X-Pro1 is, in many respects, the camera that many people hoped the X100 was foreshadowing: interchangeable lenses and a cutting-edge sensor combined in a classically-styled body and retaining the excellent hybrid optical/electronic viewfinder. We’ve had a chance to get our hands on the X-Pro 1 and the 18mm F2, 35mm F1.4 and 60mm F2.4 primes that are being launched alongside it, to get to really make sense of the camera, its capabilities and that unusual color-filter array.

Just Posted: Sony NEX-7 Hands-on Video Preview

16 Oct

Just Posted: Our hands-on video preview of the Sony NEX-7. The NEX-7 is Sony’s enthusiast mirrorless camera, combining a 24MP CMOS sensor with a 2.4M dot OLED electronic viewfinder and more physical controls than on any of the previous NEX cameras. There’s been a lot of interest in camera, so we’ve prepared a hands-on preview video to show what it can do. There will be a more extensive written preview published next week, as part of the process of writing a full review but, in the meantime, we hope this video helps give you an idea of what to expect.

Just posted: Olympus E-PM1 (PEN Mini) preview and video

05 Oct

Just Posted: Olympus PEN Mini preview and video. Behind the bluster of the latest announcements, the Olympus E-PM1 has started hitting the shelves. In many respects it’s pretty similar to the E-PL3 (and it features most of that camera’s enhancements over the previous PEN models). It’s built around the familiar 12MP sensor, shoots 1080i60 HD video and features an array of Olympus’ Art Filters. It stands out in one respect though – it’s the least expensive mirrorless interchangeable lens camera we’ve yet seen (in terms of list price). We’re working on a review but, in the meantime, have put together a preview article and video.
