Pixelmator, the company behind a $ 30 image editing application for Mac, has just announced a new product called Pixelmator Pro. Though it hasn’t yet been revealed how much this software will cost, the company has detailed many of its features, some of them powered by artificial intelligence.
Pixelmator Pro, an editor designed specifically for macOS, taps Apple’s Core ML framework to bring machine learning capabilities to certain features including: horizon detection, automatic layer naming, an object-removing repair tool, and a quick selection tool.
The editor itself has a single-window design alongside a ‘reimagined editing workflow,’ the company explains, saying its app is ‘totally and completely’ designed for Apple’s operating system. Despite the simplicity of its design, Pixelmator Pro is promised to pack a robust array of tools for editing images (including Raw files), digital painting, adjusting colors, adding non-destructive effects, and more.

Speaking to The Verge, Andrius Gailiunas of Pixelmator explained that Pixelmator Pro is designed for use by anyone. “Our goal has always been to create an image editor that absolutely anyone could use and enjoy,” says Gailiunas. Because the software is designed for Mac, users will have access to iCloud backups and syncing, support for the Touch Bar on new MacBook Pro laptops, and support for split-screen multitasking.
Pixelmator plans to launch its Pro application this autumn, but hasn’t stated the price yet. In that same interview with The Verge, the company said it will price Pro as affordably as possible; however, we presume it will cost more than the $ 30 they’re charging for the regular Pixelmator editor.

The world’s largest solar power-producing nation is showing off its record-setting green energy production through an adorable new array shaped like a giant panda bear, the national animal of China.
This Panda Power Plant in Datong, China, is the brainchild of Panda Green Energy in partnership with the United Nations Development Program. And this first sections of this huge creature-shaped station mosaic have just been hooked up to the grid.
The plant also going to grow — currently at 50 megawatts, the installation will have a capacity of 100 MW upon completion. Over the next 25 years, the array is estimated to provide as much power as a million tons of coal and to reduce CO2 emissions by over 2.5 million tons.
The whole panda figure is part of the power production process: darker parts of the animal shape (like legs and arms) are made up of monocrystalline silicone solar cells — gray areas (face and torso) are thin-film solar cells.
An educational center alongside the Panda Power Plant aims to teach children about the advantages of solar power and other forms of sustainable energy. Meanwhile, more panda plants are in planning phases as well across China, and some may also end up outside the country.

Here’s a neat little demo that you can use to wow your non-photographic friends, or your favorite photo novice. Thirty-five seconds into the polarizing filter intro above, Christopher Frost captures a series of shots with and without a polarizer, and the difference is striking.
The video itself is several years old, offering a basic overview of circular polarizers, how they work, and why they’re ‘so neat.’ It’s useful for beginners, but the part we enjoyed most was the demo—where Frost laps a polarizer onto his camera, shoots video of some reflective surface, and turns it while the video runs.
The surface of a river, a storefront window, stacks of books, even some reflective leaves later on in the video, all of them take on a totally different character when you remove the reflections by using a polarizer:

Even while it feels like certain things are moving backward, efforts to power the world with solar energy instead of fossil fuels continue to reach for the sky, innovating advancements that make a renewable future more achievable. Tesla’s Solar Roof tiles are about to become commercially available, flexible solar panels are cheaper and more efficient than ever, we’re several steps closer to transparent solar power-producing windows and there’s even a product so thin and tiny it’s called ‘solar glitter.’
Designed with apartment-dwellers in mind, these smart solar blinds are inexpensive, easy to install, and work best when the blinds are open. If you have a window that gets a little too sunny at some point in the day, these could be an ideal gadget to reduce your electricity costs by up to 70 percent. They work best on the outside of your window, producing up to 100 watts of electricity, which is enough for one window to charge your laptop. You can use a smart app to control the blinds and monitor how much power they’re producing.
The Smart Flower features solar panel ‘petals’ that unfurl at sunrise, automatically directing themselves toward the sun and continuing to move throughout the day for optimal placement to produce 40 percent more energy than a static solar panel setup. Taking its inspiration from the shape of a sunflower, the smartflowerPOP will juice you up with 3,400 to 6,300 KWH per year.
Tesla and SolarCity opened a 13 MW solar far in Kauai, Hawaii featuring 54,978 solar panels and a 52 MWh battery bank, large enough to run twenty-four hours a day and provide up to 44 percent of the island’s power, compared to its 92 percent dependence on fossil fuel in 2011.
There are a lot of reasons to be skeptical of a solar panel roadway, the first and foremost being that integrating an emerging technology into infrastructure may not be the best idea for long-term success. Solar power is rapidly changing, and the tech used for France’s ‘Wattway’ and similar projects will likely soon be obsolete, not to mention the probability of the panels being damaged. But The idea could still have weight for some applications, and Wattway is expected to generate 280MWh per year.
An innovation called Dragon SCALEs by Sandia National Laboratories acts like solar glitter, shrinking solar panels down to tiny, flexible snowflake-inspired cells that could theoretically be applied to just about anything. Making use of recent advancements in micro design and micro fabrication, the panels can be folded like paper, rapidly and cheaply installed, and turn just about any object into a solar power generator.

Announced alongside the a9 is an accessory that should excite existing E-mount camera owners, particularly videographers: the NPA-MQZ1K Multi-Battery Adaptor Kit. It comes with two of the new NP-FZ100 batteries and has space for another two. The kit not only works as a charging station for up to four Z type batteries, but also has a dummy battery that allows it to be used as an external power pack.
The unit is compatible not only with the a9 but also with the a7, a7R, a7S, a7 II, a7R II, a7S II, a6000, a6300, a6500, a5000, a5100 and RX10 III, providing up to 8x their current battery capacity. It includes tripod-style mounting sockets for attachment to a video rig.
The dummy battery is the same shape as the a9’s new ‘Z type’ battery but has an outer shell that can be removed, revealing a ‘W type’ adapter, which can slot into cameras that use the NP-FW50 battery.

Any seasoned landscape photographer can tell you that the moment spent actually pressing the shutter is just the tip of the iceberg – hours and even days are spent planning, getting into position and waiting for the right conditions. So the story behind Jack Fusco’s impressive new time-lapse, 61G Ocean Entry, might be familiar to landscape photo veterans.
Fusco and team traveled to Hawaii’s Big Island hoping to capture a somewhat rare occurrence: lava flowing into the Pacific Ocean from Kilauea Volcano. The goal was to capture a time-lapse of the stars along with the spectacular light show created by the flowing lava meeting ocean water.
If you watch the video above and you’ll see that Fusco’s mission was a success, but the behind-the-scenes story is equally fascinating. A rainy forecast and logistical challenges meant that the crew had to do a lot of thinking on their feet. All told, they came away with 1.3TB of data after 20 miles of hiking, hundreds of miles driven and very few hours spent sleeping. Was it worth the trouble? Google has rolled out a search engine with a specific target in mind: your house, more specifically how much area of your roof could be covered in solar panels, what that would save you and where you can look for companies to install a system for you.
Interested homeowners can input their addresses and get realistic illustrations of how many solar panels would fit and what their potential cost savings on energy bills are likely to be.
A complex data comprising everything from your home’s location and orientation to the presence of shade from adjacent trees or buildings – but this set is broken down into simple information for users.
Google, of course, is well-positioned to make this Sunroof tool effective, combining its Google Maps and Earth data that can sort out not just the footprint of a building but its 3D space too, and thus shadows. It also has all of the other information at hand, like average temperatures, sun exposure, cloud cover.
Users of the tool can tinker with variables, but ultimately are given a recommended installation that maximizes the potential output and thus puts more back in homeowner pockets long-term. For now it is limited to the San Francisco Bay Area, Boston and a few other locations, but they have plans to expand around the country.
