Apple selling more Plus models than ever

31 Jan

Apple’s financial results, which will be released tomorrow, show that in Q4 2016 Apple has sold more iPhone 7 Plus units than any of the preceding Plus models in previous years. The Plus model has a larger screen, more RAM and a bigger battery than its standard counterpart but we’d suspect the iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera with its 2x optical zoom factor and portrait mode has a lot to do with consumers increasingly opting for the more expensive iPhone variant. Overall 24 million iPhone 7 Plus units have been sold which is a 55% increase compared to the 15.5 million iPhone 6s Plus in Q4 2016. This represents 40% of all iPhone 7 sales.

This is also the first time that users in China bought more Plus devices than standard iPhones. 52% of iPhone buyers opted for the dual-camera model. With the previous iPhone 6s generation only 40% decided to go with the larger version.

Despite good news for the iPhone 7 Plus, overall the iPhone has been struggling in the fourth quarter of 2016. According to analysts Cowen & Co, the Apple results show that consumers are less willing to upgrade their device than before and rumors about a 10 year anniversary iPhone model in 2017 made some users skip the 2016 model. Like all mobile manufacturers, Apple is under constant pressure to innovate. At least in terms of imaging the 7 Plus dual-cam looked like a step into the right directions. Let’s hope Apple can follow up on it 2017.

iPhone 7 Plus survives 13 hours in icy Russian river

28 Jan

A video posted by Fedor (@emfedor1983) on

Apple’s iPhone 7 isn’t officially classified as a waterproof. With its IP67 rating it is capable of surviving immersion at a depth of one meter (3.3 feet) for 30 minutes but this is meant to protect against accidental drops into water or splashes rather than make the phone suitable for underwater activities.

However, an incident during an ice fishing trip in Russia has now demonstrated that the device offers more environmental protection than its IP rating would suggest. According to Russian language publication ykt.ru a fisherman dropped his iPhone 7 Plus into an ice fishing hole in the city of Yakutsk. Unable to retrieve the device, it was left in the water overnight, until the next day a diver friend of the phone’s owner was, after three attempts, able to find the device and bring it back to the surface.

When taken out of the water, the iPhone powered on successfully and did not show any signs of malfunction after 13 hours in the freezing 4°C/39°F water. According to its owner the iPhone 7 Plus had approximately 35 percent battery charge when dropped and still showed 19% after the successful retrieval, which is documented in the Instagram video above. It’s great to know the iPhone is likely to survive even longer periods of time submerged in water, but we’d still recommend dedicated underwater equipment for your next diving or snorkeling video.

iPhone 7 Plus owners report overheating and black screen camera issues

30 Dec

Some iPhone 7 Plus owners are reporting camera issues including streaks of color on images, a completely black screen instead of an image preview, and a warning that the iPhone needs to cool down before the camera can be used (despite no signs of overheating). Some affected owners state Apple replaced their iPhone or, in some cases, just the camera module.

Reports of these issues can be found on social media sites and Reddit, where they date back several weeks. The issues appear to be hardware related, as they’ve persisted despite recent iOS updates. Affected users should take their iPhone to an Apple Store for servicing or replacement. It doesn’t appear any official workarounds have been provided.

Kamerar ZOOM is a lens attachment for the iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera

26 Dec

With the 28 and 56mm equivalent lenses of its dual-camera, the iPhone 7 Plus offers more flexibility in terms of focal length than most smartphones. If that’s still not enough, the Kamerar ZOOM is now the first lens attachment designed for the iPhone’s dual-camera.

The system includes two lens attachments that slide into a special case and over the iPhone’s built-in camera lenses. One combines a fisheye lens for the iPhone’s wide-angle camera with a tele-converter for the 56mm lens. The other improves the macro capabilities of both lenses.

In the product images the tiny lenses and the attachment don’t have the same premium look as some of the high-end smartphone lenses, for example from Moment or Zeiss. However, at only $ 45 plus import duties the Kamerar Zoom could be an inexpensive way of widening the creative potential of the iPhone 7 Plus even further. It can now be ordered on the Kamerar website.

Meizu Pro 6 Plus features 12MP Sony sensor and LED ring flash

01 Dec

Chinese smartphone maker Meizu has today unveiled the Pro 6 Plus, a high-end model with metal housing and large 5.7″ pressure-sensitive AMOLED screen with Quad-HD resolution. The Sony Exmor IMX386 sensor in the camera module has been deployed in some previous Meizu models but at 1/2.9″ and a pixel-pitch of 1.25µm it is a touch smaller than the 12MP Sony chips used in some of the other current high-end devices.

The camera also features optical image stabilization, a lens with F2.0 aperture and laser-assisted autofocus. The front-facing camera is surrounded by 10 dual-tone LEDs forming a ring flash, and comes with a 5MP sensor and F2.0 lens.

The Android OS is powered by the same Exynos 8890 chipset that can be found in the Samsung Galaxy S7 and 4GB of RAM. Buyers can choose between 64 and 128GB storage versions. The Pro 6 Plus also features a fingerprint reader that doubles as a heart-rate monitor and a dedicated audio chip. Power is supplied by a 3,400mAh battery that is charged via a USB Type-C port with fast charging.

The new model will be available in Champagne Gold, Deep Ash and Moonlight Silver. The 64GB version will set you back approximately $ 435 while the 128GB requires an investment of $ 480. No detail on availability outside China has been provided yet.

Resource Travel Editor Michael Bonocore loves the Northern African country of Morocco, having traveled there previously to lead a team for The Giving Lens. So when an opportunity came along to return to Morocco this October, Bonocore couldn’t resist.

Although he normally travels with a Sony a7R II, Bonocore noticed that he always managed to come home with lots photos taken on his mobile phone, so he challenged himself to try a new approach to travel photography. Could he tell a beautiful and cohesive story about his journey through Morocco using only his new iPhone 7 Plus? Based on his portfolio of images, we think you’ll agree that the answer is yes.

Judging by design, screen size and resolution, the new iPhone 7 Plus is nothing new. While its major specs are nearly identical to the iPhone 6s Plus, it’s in the camera department where a lot of innovation has happened. Next to the standard 28mm equivalent lens there is a second 56mm module to enable optical zooming. Combined with digital zoom, you can drag the zoom slider in the camera app up to a 10x magnification.

At F1.8 the six-element lens in the wide-angle camera comes with a faster aperture than the 6s Plus and optical image stabilization is on board as well. The 56mm ‘tele’-lens has to make do without stabilization though, and uses a slower F2.8 aperture. A bokeh-simulation mode, similar to what we’ve seen on the HTC One M8 and Huawei P9 before is also made possible by the dual-camera setup. Other new camera features include a quad-LED true-tone flash and flicker-sensor. With iOS 10 and certain third-party camera apps the new iPhone can now finally save Raw files as well.

As you can see, there are a lot of new camera features to explore on the new iPhone 7 Plus and we have done exactly that. Read our full review to see how we got on.

iOS 10.1 adds ‘beta’ support for Portrait mode to iPhone 7 Plus

26 Oct

Apple has released an update to iOS 10, which alongside various bug fixes and refinements, adds beta support for ‘Portrait’ mode in the iPhone 7 Plus.

The Portrait mode feature is only supported by the dual-lens iPhone 7 Plus model running iOS 10.1, and is designed to replicate the look of shooting at a shallow depth of field – an effect traditionally limited to larger imaging formats. Although anyone with an Apple developer account has been able to shoot with the new mode for a while (we posted a gallery including some samples last month), iOS 10.1 represents the first truly public ‘beta’ test of the new feature.

Are you curious? Have you downloaded it? Did you jump straight to the comments section before you finished reading this paragraph? Let us know.
