Profoto launches C1, C1 Plus mini studio lights for smartphones

Profoto has unveiled a small studio light that was designed specifically for smartphone use. The Profoto C1 and C1 Plus are small enough to fit in a pocket, retaining the same portability of smartphones while offering more advanced lighting capabilities than what is offered by the average phone flash.

The Profoto C1 and C1 Plus both feature rounded designs, as well as automatic flash power and exposure alongside a manual control option. The lights are designed to wirelessly connect with the user’s smartphone using Bluetooth, after which point they work in tandem with the Profoto camera app.

Both models feature a Li-Polymer battery that recharges in two hours using USB-C. The fully charged battery can power up to 2,000 full-power flashes, also offering 30 minutes of continuous light for the C1 and 40 minutes of continuous light for the C1 Plus. Both models produce ‘close to daylight’ colors with a color rendering index >90.

The Profoto C1 model has a max 1600 lumens and 800 lux flash output, four warm and three cool LEDs for color temperatures ranging from 3000-6500K, and inner reflectors under the integrated dome diffuser for producing ‘natural shadows.’ When used as a modeling light, the model offers max 280 lumens / 140 lux and CRI 90-98.

The C1 Plus is more advanced, offering a max flash output of 4300 lumens and 1700 lux, a click-on magnetic mount for using light-shaping accessories, a 1/4″-20 thread for mounting the light, and compatibility with all of Profoto’s AirTTL remotes. When used as a modeling light, this model offers max 280 lumens / 140 lux and CRI 90-98. Both the C1 and C1 Plus feature manual capture buttons on the lights.

The Profoto C1 and C1 Plus lights are available to order from a number of retailers, including B&H Photo and Adorama, for $ 299 and $ 499, respectively.

X-Rite releases i1Display Studio and Pro Plus color calibration systems for professionals

Color management company X-Rite has introduced i1Display Studio and i1Display Pro Plus, two new display color calibration products for photographers and other imaging professionals. The products offer advanced display calibration, the Pro Plus building upon the Studio’s features to include capabilities for professionals who use ‘super-bright, HD, and HDR’ displays.

The i1Display Studio features the i1 colorimeter for use with the i1Studio software, offering display calibration to ensure a consistent color profile over time. The product features Flare Correct, Intelligent Iterative Profiling, and X-Rite Ambient Light Measurement.

In addition to support for NTSC, PAL, DCI-P3, SECAM, Rec. 709, and Rec. 2020 video standards support, i1Display Studio allows users to control the color adjustment, color match up to four displays, validate results, and get reminders when it is time to re-profile a display.

i1Display Pro Plus builds upon these features, offering the i1Display Pro Plus colorimeter and i1Profiler software. This product adds support for accurately measuring brightness and luminance levels up to 2,000 nits, BT.1886 default gamma curve, and a new Black Current Subtraction tech that X-Rite says is particularly useful for displays offering close to zero black point, including OLED. The company includes a USB-C to USB-A adapter for USB-C compatibility.

Both products can be used to calibrate monitors, projectors, and mobile devices like tablets. Nikon Announces D6 in the Making, Plus Rumored D6 Specs

Well, it’s official:

The Nikon D6 is under development, as announced by Nikon earlier this week.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, because the Nikon D6 has been whispered about for months, including a lengthy list of rumored specifications.

But it’s nice to know the D6 is on its way.

Unfortunately, Nikon’s announcement includes no details on the D6, except that it will be the company’s “most advanced DSLR to date.” This may be a reference to the D6’s autofocus system, which is rumored to be better than even the Nikon D5’s incredible system.

Note that the Nikon D5 is famed for its autofocus capabilities. The D5 AF system featured 153 focus points, including 99 cross-type points. Better autofocus capabilities would be an exciting upgrade for action photographers, especially if it includes some form of Live View autofocus to rival Canon’s Dual Pixel system.

The announcement also indicated that the D6 will be a DSLR rather than a mirrorless camera. This puts to rest any speculation about Nikon’s flagship system moving to mirrorless, though rumors suggest the D6 will have several mirrorless-style features.

For instance, the D6 will likely include in-body image stabilization, which Nikon included in its full-frame mirrorless bodies, the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7. The camera may also have a high-performing silent shooting mode, which will be appreciated by photographers who need to remain discrete at events.

Now, the Nikon D6 is a professional’s camera, competing primarily with the Canon 1DX Mark II (and its likely successor, the Canon 1DX Mark III). The Nikon D6 line is primarily designed with professional sports photographers in mind, hence the incredible autofocus capabilities. It will undoubtedly feature a rugged body and lightning-fast continuous shooting speed, as well.

The Nikon D6 will likely begin shipping in early 2020, which will give professional sports photographers plenty of time to get used to its capabilities before the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

The D6 is in the works, and it’s guaranteed to impress.

X-Rite’s i1Photo Pro 3 Plus profiler can calibrate for difficult surfaces, brighter displays

Calibration tool manufacturer X-Rite has announced an updated i1Photo Pro profiler that it says is designed to provide greater accuracy when measuring from heavily textured and high gloss papers. The professional-grade i1Photo Pro 3 spectrophotometer has a larger measuring aperture to compensate for imbalances caused by uneven surfaces and uses a polarizer to cut through reflections on high-gloss papers and on textured surfaces such as canvas.

The profiler is also now able to read from much brighter displays when performing screen calibrations, with a maximum of 5K NITs allowed for. The i1Photo Pro 3, along with the i1Profiler software, can also be used to emulate M0, M1 and M2 conditions after a single scan to demonstrate how images will look under various types of lighting when optical brighteners are present in the target paper.

X-Rite says the device has been developed in response to the broadening of the range of surfaces now being printed on, and the increasing brightness and resolution of backlit displays.

X-Rite has also launched a new calibration table for those really serious about print accuracy. The i1iO Automated Scanning Table allows automated patch reading for reflective and transparent materials, and can work with a thickness of up to 33mm.

Massive Decline in Digital Camera Sales, Plus Nikon Sees Market Share Decrease

Earlier this week, Nikkei revealed the latest digital camera market trends.

And for camera manufacturers, things are looking dismal.

The market share breakdown

First, let’s take a look at the market share breakdown:

  • Canon: 40.5% (an increase of 3.9% from 2017)
  • Nikon: 19.1% (a decrease of 2.7%)
  • Sony: 17.7% (a decrease of 0.7%)
  • Fujifilm: 5.1% (an increase of 1.3%)
  • Olympus: 2.8% (an increase of 0.1%)

Notice that Canon had the biggest gains, followed by Fujifilm and Olympus. Nikon’s market share took the biggest hit, with Sony seeing a decrease, as well.

For Nikon, these numbers are not encouraging. The 2.7% drop in market share suggests the company’s latest big move – its leap into the full-frame mirrorless market – hasn’t held up well against the competition.

In some ways, this might be expected. Nikon is a small company compared to competitors such as Canon and Sony, and this puts a clear cap on its resources for innovation. On the other hand, Nikon has remained a dominant player in the digital camera market for decades.

Which begs the question:

Are we about to see Nikon losing its footing?

Unfortunately for Nikon and the other camera manufacturers, the bigger problem has little to do with reshuffled market shares, and everything to do with surging smartphone camera technology.

Because, as Nikkei’s report revealed, digital camera unit sales are down 22% from 2017.

This may come as a surprise to some, who see mirrorless cameras representing the future of photography. After all, mirrorless camera innovation is at an all-time high, with Canon and Nikon just recently joining the fray.

But here’s the issue:

As impressive as mirrorless cameras have become, smartphone cameras are still far more attractive – at least for the casual photographer. They’re smaller than the smallest mirrorless body. You always have them with you. And the simple camera interface, bolstered by features such as ‘swipe to change the exposure,’ make smartphone photography an extremely enticing option.

So in the wake of smartphone camera improvements, would-be DSLR and mirrorless photographers are consistently turning to companies like Google and Apple to satisfy their photography needs.

And it’s a trend we’re likely to see into the future.

Profoto’s B10 Plus flash with twice the power—and half the battery life—of its predecessor

Lighting manufacturer Profoto has launched a new version of its B10 miniature flash head that offers twice the output of the original model. The Profoto B10 Plus weighs only a pound more than the original and is just over two inches longer, but it provides a maximum output of 500Ws compared to the 250Ws of the B10.

The new head runs off the same lithium ion battery and accepts the same accessories as the B10, and has the same 2500 lumen modeling light with adjustable color to suit videographers working in a range of lighting conditions. In fact, all the features are the same including wireless radio control, TTL exposure and high speed sync with shutter speeds as short as 1/8000sec. The only other difference, of course, is the number of full power bursts achievable per charge – which drops from 400 in the B10 to 200 in the B10 Plus.

The Profoto B10 Plus weighs 1.9kg (4.2lbs), measures 10 x 23.5cm (3.9 x 9.3in) and costs $ 2095 / £1795. For more information see the Profoto website.

Samsung unveils Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus with triple-camera; budget-friendlier S10e with dual cam

At its Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy S10 and S10+, both offering a rear triple-camera array, alongside a budget-oriented S10e ‘essential’ model with a dual camera unit. Also announced is the S10 5G, the largest of the bunch, featuring the unique ability to apply background blur and filters in real-time to video. All four devices offer a stabilized standard wide and a fixed-focus ultra-wide camera, as well as a front-facing selfie camera, while the S10e omits the optically stabilized tele-camera available in the other three. As expected, the S10 series’ display is the center of attention with a hole-punch style front-facing camera embedded in the screen in favor of the much-maligned notch.

The rear triple camera array comprises a standard 12MP ‘main’ wide-angle, 12MP telephoto camera, and a 16MP ultra-wide unit with a 123-degree field-of-view. The F1.5/F2.4 dual aperture feature introduced in the S9 is offered on the main rear camera on all models. The S10+ offers a secondary front-facing RGB depth sensor to allow for blurred background selfies – the S10 and S10e offer a single front-facing camera.

The S10 5G also offers additional depth sensing cameras on both the front and the rear, but these are specialized low resolution (240×160) time-of-flight cameras that can sense distances of nearby objects for real-time effects like background blur. The table below summarizes all camera features for all models.

The S10 cameras are equipped with added intelligent features, including a Scene Optimizer capable of recognizing 30 unique scenes, as well as suggestions for optimal compositions. A new ‘Bright Night’ mode attempts to improve image quality in low light, presumably using long exposure image stacking techniques like Google’s Night Sight or Huawei’s Night Mode. New bokeh effects have been added to the traditional bokeh effect: spin, zoom and color fade.

The S10 cameras are capable of shooting 4K UHD video using the HDR10 format, meaning that high contrast scenes can be captured while being displayed with saturated colors and punch. The front-facing cameras can also record at UHD resolution. The time-of-flight depth sensors on both the front and rear of the S10 5G allow it to apply background blur in real time to your videos – the first time we’ve seen this ability in a consumer device.

Display sizes vary across the series: the S10e offers a 5.8″ screen, the S10’s measures 6.1″ and the S10+ offers a 6.4″ display. Each is an AMOLED display supporting HDR10+ video playback (Samsung’s version of Dolby Vision), and uses dynamic tone mapping to optimize brightness levels on the fly based on your viewing environment (a clever way of ensuring images appear similar in both dim and bright viewing environments, as we explain here).

Samsung has improved what was already a very color accurate display – these phones cover the full DCI-P3 color gamut, and offer up to a whopping 1200 nits peak brightness. Unfortunately, like all Android phones to date, most (if not all) applications don’t ‘opt-in’ to the wide-gamut mode with proper color management, so images may appear over-saturated relative to color managed devices or what most web viewers would experience.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 will start at $ 900; the S10+ at $ 1000 and the S10e at $ 750. The S10 5G is likely to be priced above $ 1000.

GoPro Plus now offers unlimited cloud storage and increased accessory discounts

GoPro has given a boost to its Plus subscription service. From now on the service offers unlimited cloud storage space for photos and videos to its subscribers. Previously users could upload unlimited photos but there was a 35-hour limit for video footage.

The service is specifically useful for users of WiFi-enabled GoPro cameras, such as the Hero5, Hero6 and Hero7 models, who can now automatically upload all captured footage to the cloud, without the need for any manual data transfer to a computer or other device first.

In addition to the lifted storage limit, the discount on GoPro accessories has also been increased for Plus subscribers. It is now 50% off most mounts and other accessories, compared to 20% previously. What hasn’t changed is the monthly subscription rate at $ 5 which makes the service a pretty enticing option for GoPro power users. There’s also a 30 day free trial period for the service if you’re interested in trying it out first.

CamFi Pro Plus brings wireless tethering to 3rd party apps

Wireless camera controller maker CamFi has launched an improved version of its CamFi Pro model, the CamFi Pro Plus. Like the Pro, the new model offers wireless tethering for more than 500 camera models from all major brands.

In addition you can now directly tether to your favorite third-party applications, such as Capture One, Lightroom, EOS utility, Sony Pixel and others, all via WiFi. As before, the camera is controlled remotely via the native CamFi app.

In its own tests, CamFi found the maximum Wi-Fi speed to be approximately 10MB/sec. 20MP Raw files need approximately three seconds to transfer from your camera to the computer using the Capture One software,

Third party tethering works with Windows and Mac computers. A full list of supported cameras is available here. The new CamFi Pro Plus will set you back $ 339 but existing Pro users will be able to upgrade for $ 40 from the 18th of January. More information is available on the CamFi website.

CamFi Pro Plus adds the third party tethering service. It can send USB data to the client device directly through a WiFi connection. When a camera is connected with CamFi Pro Plus, the laptop which connects to it will act as if the USB device plugged into it directly. In tests, the maximum Wi-Fi speed can achieve 10M Bytes/second. For a 20M raw photo, for example, this translates into need only about three seconds to transfer with Capture One.

The third party tethering service of CamFi Pro Plus supports Windows and Mac. The price of CamFi Pro Plus is $ 339. It can be ordered via CamFi web site. All the existing customers of CamFi Pro can order the upgrade service for $ 40.

Vello LW-500 Extendá Plus wireless controller brings remote control to select pro cameras

Camera gear company Vello has announced its new LW-500 Extendá Plus Wi-Fi Camera Controller for remote camera control. The new controller supports select Canon and Nikon, as well as most Sony cameras, making it possible to wirelessly control them using a Windows, Mac, Android or iOS device from as far away as 60m / 197ft.

The Extendá Plus brings remote access to select cameras, enabling users to browse, select, stream and share content from a smartphone, tablet or Windows PC. As well, the controller provides remote access to camera settings, enabling photographers to adjust white balance, exposure, shutter speed, and more with a real-time preview from a distance.

The LW-500 has a 10MB/s transfer rate, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, intervalometer with bulb mode and support for touch focus and live view. The controller is compatible with the following Canon and Nikon cameras:

Though most Sony Alpha cameras are supported, Vello warns some cameras don’t support all of the controller’s functions. The company provides a list [PDF] with each model’s compatibility.

The Vello LW-500 Extendá Plus wireless camera controller is available to preorder for $ 299.99. B&H Photo currently shows an expected availability date of January 16.
