Some of the locations have storied histories, and others remain a mystery – photo shoots of spaces that must remain off the map to avoid disturbing delicate or dangerous ruins, or trespassing on private property.
Matthew Christopher has taken pictures of it all, from prisons and hospitals to churches with basement meth labs to deserted transportation infrastructure and now-demolished architecture. When he got in touch with WebUrbanist, a balance had to be struck between secrecy and revelation.
But beyond simple still images, he has escalated his photography to fully-interactive, (click here to see them embedded on his website:) three-dimensional online panoramas – these compelling variants are part film, part photo, and provide an really impressive sense of spatial immersion (hint: be sure to go full-screen for the full effect – these are high-resolution!).
Some of these places are in the middle of preservation battles as well, their futures as uncertain as their histories. A few are publicly known, leaving Matthew able to discuss them, like this prison and this state hospital. He also has both prints and books available at this store on his website.
Wars show through the physical devastation they leave behind. In many cases the effects can be seen decades later.

Each city is as different, and as beautiful, as we are. That’s the sentiment behind ‘Metropolitan Cityscapes‘, beautifully complex city maps with the negative space around the streets meticulously cut out, leaving delicate patterns behind.
Perhaps your tie to your favorite city is family history, or perhaps you walked down one of those unfamiliar streets as a visitor and have never forgotten the way it felt to take part in something entirely new. Designers Chauntelle Trinh and Eckard Buscher didn’t just arbitrarily choose the cities for their series of papercut maps, they explored them and set out to capture their essence.
Rather than simply modifying a city map and cutting it out, the designers undertook what they call ‘expeditions’ to gain an intimate understanding of metropolitan cities like Hong Kong, New York and San Francisco. Walking the streets to get a sense of the terrain, discovering the features that stood out to them, colored the way they designed each map.
“The centre of a city, its beating heart, is a palimpsest overflowing with imagery. Layers upon layers of stories have accumulated and disappeared through time. Behind each facade, each brick, each pathway, untold stories, memories and dreams are waiting to be narrated. Above all the noise, if you listen carefully, you can hear your own tale of the city.”
“To tell our stories of the city, we peeled away all the complex urban layers so that only the bare bones of place remains. Each line drawn and cut on every cityscape has a distinct story. Metropolitan Cityscapes are a new vision of the city as organism.”
CityFabric creates t-shirts, totes and prints that are painstakingly hand-printed with maps of the city of your choice, including Raleigh, Brooklyn and Seattle.

Prevent Word 2010 from showing recently-accessed documents, and clear the list of recently-opened document locations.
Microsoft Word 2010, similar to other Office 2010 applications, keeps a list of recently open documents, making them available by selecting “File” – “Recent”. This way if you have a variety of documents located in deeply-nested subdirectories or network shares, you can quickly access them without having to navigate via Explorer.
For privacy reasons, many people would rather not have this list available. It can be disabled like so:…

Olympus’s woes have deepened after the Tokyo Stock Exchange placed its shares ‘under supervision’ and warned of possible delisting. The news follows the admission that senior executives colluded for decades to hide investment losses from the market, and a subsequent statement from Olympus that it would not be able to submit its quarterly earnings report on schedule. The TSE has warned that the company will be delisted if the report is not submitted by 14th December, prompting a further fall in its shares which have now lost almost two-thirds of their value over the past month.
