Pixelmator Pro 2 announced, featuring all-new interface and Apple M1 support

Pixelmator has announced Pixelmator Pro 2.0. Pixelmator calls it ‘the biggest update to Pixelmator Pro yet,’ and it includes an all-new design, support for Macs using Apple’s new M1 chip, full compatibility with the upcoming macOS Big Sur (macOS 11.0) and much more. Further, the update is free for all existing Pixelmator Pro users.

Pixelmator Pro’s editing engine is underpinned by Metal code, allowing the team to take full advantage of the unified memory architecture of the Apple M1 chip. The result is ‘much speedier and much more responsive image editing.’ Tasks relying upon machine learning, such as ML Super Resolution, are up to 15 times faster on the new Macs equipped with the M1 chip. Pixelmator Pro 2.0 remains a Universal app, meaning it runs natively on both M1 and Intel-based Apple devices.

Regarding the all-new design, Pixelmator has worked hard to make Pixelmator Pro 2.0 a more intuitive application and has given it a modern makeover. The team states that ‘almost every tool, every menu, and every button has been updated to make the app more intuitive and more fun to use…’ Further, users can customize the Pixelmator Pro interface, including the app’s list of tools and its toolbar. There are also four new workspace presets to choose from, including photography, design, illustration and painting.

In terms of tools, Pixelmator Pro 2.0 includes a new Effects Browser, a new Presets Browser (including over 200 new presets) and more. There are seven new color adjustment preset collections and eight new effect preset collections. You can read the full list of updates by clicking here.

Pixelmator Pro 2.0 will be available on November 19. For existing Pixelmator Pro users, the update will be free. For new customers, Pixelmator Pro is available for $ 39.99 USD. Pixelmator Photo update adds AI-powered image upscaling tool, ML Super Resolution

Pixelmator, makers of the photo editing application Pixelmator Photo, has released Pixelmator Photo version 1.4. The new update includes ML Super Resolution, a new tool designed to enlarge low-resolution photos with a single tap. ML Super Resolution utilizes machine learning (hence the ‘ML’ in the name) and the processing power available in Apple iPad devices to enlarge photos, illustrations, paintings and designs while preserving and enhancing details, edges and textures.

ML Super Resolution was designed for the newly released iPad Air and was presented during Apple’s ‘Time Flies’ event last week. The app is powered by the new A14 Bionic chip and Pixelmator states that it is the first AI-powered image enlargement tool available on a mobile device.

To enlarge images, ML Super Resolution ‘creates a layered representation of the image that is over 100 channels deep, detecting features such as edges, patterns, textures, gradients, and colors.’ After this, the channels are upscaled individually and combined back into a single image. Pixelmator states that the process ‘requires up to 62 thousand times more processing power than traditional approaches,’ something that Pixelmator states is only possible on iPad thanks to recent advancements in iPad performance and the dedicated processor in the Apple Neural Engine.

Tomas Andrijauskas, lead developer of Pixelmator Photo, says, ‘The processing power of iPad has advanced in leaps and bounds over the last few years. With these advances, it is now possible to open up workflows that simply were not available in the past. One such workflow is using machine learning techniques to enlarge photos while retaining sharpness and enhancing intricate details.’

Pixelmator for iOS gets major version 2.5 update with three new browsers

Image editing software company Pixelmator has announced the release of Pixelmator for iOS version 2.5. The company describes this as a major update to its photo editor, one that adds a new file browser, a new document browser based on Apple’s Files app and new image size presets that likewise come with a new browser. According to the company, ‘This update is a really big deal for Pixelmator for iOS.’

Pixelmator for iOS 2.5 brings a total of three big new features; the company notes that while they ‘might not be amazingly flashy,’ they are ‘incredibly important to the future’ of the app.

The new Files-based document browser offers a much better file browsing experience compared to the previous version of the software, offering users access to important features like tagging and search. Pixelmator explains that introducing this new feature is the ‘key first step’ in its plan to refresh the mobile image editor.

Users will note that the new browser makes it easier to open and edit images that are stored in iCloud, as well as ones on external devices, third-party cloud services and ones stored on iPhone or iPad itself. The new photo browser joins this, simplifying the process of finding and opening images from the Photos app.

The third big feature is the new image size presets, which are exactly what they sound like: a way to rapidly create new images that feature commonly used resolutions. These three major additions are joined by a number of smaller updates, including new quick actions for ‘Open Most Recent Photo’ and ‘Take Photo,’ plus Pixelmator for iOS will now preserve the selected Flash mode when the camera has been closed and then reopened.

Other changes to Pixelmator for iOS version 2.5 include an adjustment to the True Tone effect that reduces its strength while editing, as well as multiple bug fixes for problems that included memory management issues, trouble opening and creating files if select third-party apps were installed, a crashing bug that involved the Full Keyboard Access setting and a display issue with the Help feature.

These features build upon the app’s existing tools and other offerings; Pixelmator bills its app as a full-featured image editor, one designed for the iPad and iPhone. The software features expected image editing tools like cloning, blurring, levels, curves, and more, as well as a variety of image templates, effects presets and distortion tools.

The new Pixelmator for iOS 2.5 update can be downloaded now. The app is available on the Apple App Store now for $ 4.99.

Pixelmator Photo 1.2 update adds cursor support, ML Color Match, Split View and more

Pixelmator has released a 1.2 update for its powerful iPad photo editing app Pixelmator Photo that adds cursor support, an improved Split View mode, a Match Colors tool, a new copy/paste function and much more.

The update comes on the heels of Apple’s new iPad Pro models and accompany Magic Keyboards, which offer not only a tactile typing experience, but also an integrated trackpad that works alongside iPadOS 13.4 to bring mouse-like support to iPadOS apps. By adding support for the new cursor functionality, Pixelmator Photo adds yet another means of input for editing photos on the go (it works with third-party Bluetooth cursors and trackpads as well).

Also new is Split View support, which lets you use Pixelmator Photo alongside another app without interrupting your workflow, as well as a new ML Match Colors function, which allows you to ‘match the look and feel of one photo to another’ thanks to machine-learning. Pixelmator has also added a new intensity slider for color adjustments and presets and the ability to share images directly from the Photos browser within the app without opening each image individually.

Other improvements and fixes addressed in the 1.2 update include improved screenshot capture, new default color adjustment options, a collection of user interface changes and a handful of bug fixes to smooth out the overall experience.

Pixelmator Photo 1.2 is available to download in the iOS App Store for $ 4.99.

Pixelmator Pro update brings ML Super Resolution feature

Pixelmator today released an update to its Pixelmator Pro Avalon image editing software. The new ML Super Resolution feature increases the resolution of images while maintaining sharpness and levels of detail, making (to a degree) the ‘enhance image’ operation in detective shows a reality.

Compared to a simple nearest neighbor upscaling algorithm the Pixelmator is capable of achieving much better results thanks to machine learning technology. It takes into account the actual content of every image, attempts to recognize edges, patterns, and textures, and recreates detail based on Pixelmator’s dataset, in a similar way to Google’s RAISR technology.

Despite the complex technology Pixelmator says the feature is very fast and takes a few seconds to upscale an image on the latest Mac computers thanks the use of Core ML 3 and multi-GPU support. It’s also entirely on-device, with the trained model integrated in the Pixelmator Pro app package. This means all processing is done locally and no data is sent to any online servers.

Additionally, the tool is capable of removing noise and JPG artifacts including compression artifacts. To do its magic the software requires macOS High Sierra and a Metal-compatible graphics card.

Pixelmator Pro 1.5 Avalon is available from the Mac App Store as a free update for existing users or for $ 39.99 for new customers. There is also an upgrade discount for owners of the original Pixelmator software.

Pixelmator Pro ‘Avalon’ update brings macOS Catalina support and more

The latest Pixelmator Pro version 1.5 Avalon comes with a number of updates, including support for macOS Catalina, the Mac Pro, Pro Display XDR, machine-learning powered noise reduction and improved performance.

The Mac image editing package is now fully compatible with macOS 10.15 Catalina, including support for Sidecar and Apple Pencil. Pixelmator Pro users running Apple’s latest OS can now extend their desktop workspace with an iPad and use the Apple Pencil for painting, retouching and illustration tasks. This includes the Pencil’s double-tap gesture for undoing and redoing, switching between Paint and Erase tools, or showing the Apple Colors window.

In addition the software’s editing engine has been optimized to take full advantage of the new Mac Pro’s power reserves. Pixalmator says that thanks to multi-GPU processing, the new Core ML-powered ML Denoise is applied up to 2.5 times faster on a Mac Pro with 2 GPUs compared to and iMac Pro.

The Apple Pro Display XDR’s 10-bit color depth and P3 wide color gamut are supported as well and the Pixelmator claims the new Extended Dynamic Range Mode lets you see previously invisible detail when editing RAW image files.

ML Denoise is a new noise reduction tools based on machine-learning. It is designed to remove luminance and color noise and can reduce compression artifacts. Pixelmator says the tool has been trained to intelligently preserve details, avoiding the blurring effect of simpler denoising tools.

Performance improvements include 10 times faster zooming and scrolling, up to 2.4 times faster painting and up to 2.7 times faster effect rendering.

Pixelmator Pro 1.5 Avalon is available today on the Mac App Store as a free update for existing users. New customers will have to invest $ 39.99 and am upgrade discount is available for users of the original Pixelmator app. More information is available on the Pixelmator website.

Pixelmator Photo gets major v1.1 update with iPadOS 13 support and more

Photo editing app Pixelmator Photo has received a major update to version 1.1, gaining support for Apple’s newly released iPadOS 13, including its redesigned Files app. As well, the updated app brings ‘deeper integration’ with Apple’s iCloud Photos service, batch photo editing that is ‘enhanced’ via machine learning, and the ability to resize exported images.

Pixelmator Photo is a version of the Pixelmator desktop software designed specifically for the iPad. Apple released iPadOS 13 earlier this month for its tablets, bringing a version of iOS tailored specifically for the iPad, including an improved Files app.

The Pixelmator Photo 1.1 update adds support for both iPadOS 13 and that new Files app, enabling users to edit images stored on external devices, including USB drives and SD cards, as well as remote online services including file servers.

Joining that new capability is ML-enhanced batch photo editing, offering users access to machine learning algorithms trained on what the company says were millions of professional images. Pixelmator includes its own batch editing workflows with Pixelmator Photo 1.1, though users can also create their own with actions like cropping and straightening, as well as custom color adjustment presets.

Going forward, Pixelmator Photo will now automatically manage photo edits and save the changes to the user’s library thanks to the updated iCloud Photos integration. Users no longer have to create duplicates or manually import images, plus it is now possible to revert images, favorite them, and delete them in the Photos library without exiting Pixelmator Photo.

Pixelmator Pro 1.3.1 released with Portrait Masks for images captured in iPhone Portrait mode

Image editing app Pixelmator Pro has been updated to version 1.3.1, gaining Portrait Masks for images taken using the iPhone’s Portrait mode in iOS 12. With Portrait Masks, any iPhone Portrait mode imported into Pixelmator Pro is automatically opened with a layer mask made from the depth data.

The new feature makes it possible to rapidly isolate the portrait’s foreground from the background, enabling users to replace the background or make other quick adjustments. Pixelmator demonstrated the feature in the video above.

In addition to the Portrait Masks feature, Pixelmator Pro 1.3.1 adds new keyboard shortcuts for duplicating layers, organizing content, making selections, and more. As well, the editor now uses tabs by default. Finally, the update also adds a new ‘Comics’ effect under Stylize for applying a comic book style to images. Pixelmator Photo AI-powered image editing app for iPad will launch this year

Pixelmator has announced plans to release an image editing app called Pixelmator Photo for the Apple iPad. The new app utilizes Apple’s Core ML machine learning technology to power multiple features including ML Fix, an algorithm trained using 20 million professional images.

Pixelmator Photo is an AI-powered app offering non-destructive image editing with desktop-class adjustments on the iPad. The software features ML Fix, ML Crop, and ML Presets, all features that utilize machine learning to enhance images. ML Crop’s algorithm offers crop suggestions that fit the user’s desired aspect ratio, for example, while ML Fix intelligently adjusts color, white balance, and exposure.

The ML Preset feature, meanwhile, offers film emulation presets enhanced using machine learning. The presets are designed to imitate film products that include Ilford HP5, Kodak Porta, and Fujifilm Superia. The feature works by first adjusting an image’s colors and lighting, then applying the film preset.

Other Pixelmator Photo features include adjustment tools like Curves, Levels, Saturation, Exposure, and Brightness, as well as support for raw images from more than 500 cameras, cropping, grain adjustment, and the inclusion of a Repair tool.

The app will launch in the Apple App Store this year as an iPad exclusive. The price hasn’t yet been revealed.
