Gear Offer is an online marketplace for buying and selling used camera gear

When it comes to buying used photography gear, there are plenty of options around the web: eBay, Amazon, KEH, B&H, and Adorama. Now, there’s a new option — Gear Offer, a photography-specific marketplace for selling and buying used camera equipment.

Based out of Scottsdale, Arizona, United States, Gear Offer is a self-proclaimed “marketplace just for photographers that’s hassle free, priced fairly and continually improving” founded in March 2017.

Trusting a new online marketplace isn’t always easy, but Gear Offer clearly lays out its terms of service and guidelines on how selling and buying items works.

Listing items on Gear Offer is free. There’s even a built-in pricing tool that uses recent sales of identical products as a guideline for what price you should set your item(s) at. Once the gear is listed, it’s a matter of waiting for someone to click the “buy now” button on the product page or make an offer that’s accepted.

Once an item is purchased, the funds from the buyer will be transferred to their Gear Offer account. The seller then packs up the item, ships it off, and adds the tracking number to the purchase on Gear Offer. The buyer will then receive updates until the item (hopefully) safely arrives on their doorstep. After the payment has cleared, which Gear Offer claims is “typically in 2 business days” the seller will receive their funds. Below is a chart provided by Gear Offer that illustrates the timeline of the buying and selling process.

To protect against fraudulent accounts and activity, Gear Offer says it uses machine learning to continually evaluate the risk of certain sales and transactions. It also relies on reviews from buyers and sellers to help build trust between frequent users. In the event something does go wrong, Gear Offers says customer service is provided by “real live humans,” and not ones in offshore call centers.

To confirm this claim DPReview tested the Gear Offer contact line by calling at roughly 4pm ET on a Saturday and after stating its name via a Google Voice operator service, DPReview was connected to a line that was eventually directed to a voicemail that said we would hear back “as soon as possible” regarding its inquiry. DPReview called again five minutes later in a secondary effort to contact the Gear Offer team and was immediately connected with a representative from the company.

Gear Offer makes its money is through a 6.9% processing fee when an item is sold, similar to how eBay and Amazon works, although at a lower rate — Gear Offer notes that eBay charges 12.9% (plus a standard $ .30 fixed processing fee).1 The 6.9% fee comes from the income of the seller of the item.

LG V40 ThinQ first smartphone to offer super-wide-angle and tele cameras

Multi-camera setups with a variation of focal lengths are pretty much the norm on high-end smartphones these days. However, thus far you’ve had to decide if you want a super-wide-angle module (like on most recent LG models) or a tele-camera (like on the iPhone X, Huawei P20 Pro or Galaxy Note 9) next to the camera’s “standard” wide-angle lens.

Pretty soon you’ll be able to have both. LG just “pre-announced” its new LG V40 ThinQ on its Korean website and confirmed the triple-camera setup that reportedly comes with a super-wide angle and tele next to the main camera. The latter will feature a very fast F1.5 aperture.

The official announcement of the device is scheduled for October 3rd, and unfortunately information on other specifications is rather sparse at this point. All we know is that the display will measure 6.4 inches and, looking at the teaser video, will feature some kind of soft-touch surface for increased grip.

We will let you know as soon as more information on the LG V40 ThinQ camera specs and features becomes available.

Phase One XF IQ4 digital backs offer up to 150MP and ‘Capture One Inside’

Phase One has announced its new ‘Infinity Platform,’ which has built the core of the company’s Capture One software into the processors of three new XF IQ4 54 x 40mm digital backs. According to Phase One, having ‘Capture One Inside’ brings “unprecedented image editing and processing – once possible only in the Capture One software.” The new processor also provides improvements in JPEG quality, live view and frame rates.

The Infinity Platform includes three digital backs, including two 150 Megapixel, Sony-designed BSI-CMOS models (IQ4 150MP and IQ4 150MP Achromatic) as well as a 100MP Trichromatic model. The backs now include three new tethering options, via Wi-Fi, USB-C and Ethernet. All three models have dual card slots, supporting XQD and SD.

The three XF IQ4 backs will ship in October and include the camera body and prism and the Blue Ring prime lens of your choice. Prices range from from $ 47,990 for the IQ4 100MP to $ 54,990 for the IQ4 150MP Achromatic.

Rumor: Samsung Galaxy S10 triple-cam to offer super-wide-angle and 3x tele

We’ve already heard rumors about Samsung launching three models for its upcoming Galaxy S10 flagship smartphone generation, including one featuring a triple-camera on the back.

Now more information has surfaced about the specifications of the Samsung triple-camera and if the rumors turn out to be true, mobile photographers will have something to look forward to.

According to German website AllAboutSamsung, the South Korean manufacturer’s upcoming flagship will be the first smartphone to combine a super-wide-angle and a tele-lens with the primary camera. The super-wide-angle is expected to come with a 123-degree angle of view, the tele lens with a 3x magnification, offering a wider zoom range than any other smartphone.

If the rumored specs are close to the real thing… the new Samsung could be the smartphone for photography in 2019

The only current smartphone with triple-camera on the market, Huawei’s P20 Pro, doesn’t come with a super-wide-angle option and instead opts for a monochrome sensor for increased low light capabilities and a native monochrome shooting mode. The main options for smartphone users who want a built-in super-wide-angle, LG’s recent models, have to make do without a tele-zoom.

The rest of the rumored Samsung specifications sound promising, too: the super-wide-angle is expected to come with a 16MP resolution and F1.9 aperture, the primary camera will supposedly feature a 12MP sensor and dual aperture, and the tele uses a 13MP imager and F2.4 lens. No OIS or autofocus will be available on the super-wide-angle but given the angle of view those features might not be missed.

If the rumored specs are close to the real thing and Samsung’s engineers manage to merge image information from all three sensors in an efficient way, the new Samsung could be the smartphone for photography in 2019. We will know more in a few months time.

Samsung’s super fast 970 PRO and EVO NVMe SSDs offer ‘exceptional endurance’

Samsung Electronics has launched the 970 PRO and EVO solid state drives (SSD), aimed at tech enthusiasts and professionals. Thanks to very fast read/write speeds and large capacities they look like interesting options for anyone handling and editing large amounts of image or video data.

The new drives come in the M.2 form factor and with the latest PCIe Gen 3×4 lane interface, offering NVM Express (NVMe) bandwidth. The 970 PRO is capable of sequential read speed of up to 3,500 MB/s and sequential write speed of up to 2,700 MB/s. The EVO models offers the same read speed but a slightly slower write speed of up to 2,500 MB/s. In terms of write speed that equals a 30 percent improvement over the previous 960 generation.

Samsung has achieved this by implementing its latest V-NAND technology and an upgraded Phoenix controller. Additionally, the 970 EVO Samsung’s TurboWrite technology uses a buffer of up to 78GB to enable even faster write speeds.

That said, the new models aren’t only fast, Samsung also claims they are very reliable. Samsung’s Dynamic Thermal Guard technology protects the drives against overheating through temperature monitoring, and a heat spreader and new nickel-coating on the controller lower temperatures further. Samsung’s warranty covers a 5 year period or up to 1,200 terabytes written.

The 970 EVO will be available in 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB sizes, the 970 PRO with capacities of 512GB and 1TB. Both drives will be available worldwide starting May 7th, 2018. The Pro model starts at $ 330, while the smallest EVO drive will set you back $ 120.

DJI’s new Master Wheels and Force Pro offer ultra-precise gimbal control

Amid the wares DJI introduced at NAB 2018 this week are a pair of professional gimbal control tools designed for “every level of filmmaker and scenario.” Called the Master Wheels and Force Pro, these two DJI products are built to control the company’s Ronin 2 and Ronin-S gimbals, offering high precision control and hoping to simplify the shooting of complex and/or fast-moving scenes.

DJI Master Wheels

Master Wheels is a control device that adjusts gimbal movements using a trio of weighted wheels. These wheels control roll, pan, and tilt in part using ultra-high-res optical encoders capable of detecting “the subtlest” adjustments, DJI explains. Each wheel’s angle can be adjusted, and the wheels can also be detached.

Master Wheels supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless transmission and has an operating distance of more than 1.9 miles / 3km. Latency is as low as 10ms, and users have the option of detaching the wireless transmitter to remotely mount it with a 5m / 16ft cord, providing a stronger signal.

Other features include dials to control dampening, speed, and smoothness, support for 1/4″ and 3/8″ accessories, and a dedicated Mitchell mount on the main console’s base.

DJI Force Pro

The other product announced at NAB 2018, Force Pro, enables users to remotely control gimbals via a 2.4GHz/5GHz wireless transmission system and DJI’s remote control tech. Force Pro also offers latency as low as 10ms, plus a CANBUS cable physical tether with a 200Hz signal for avoiding interference issues.

The control tool also features a built-in Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and compass that work together to prevent gimbal drifting and improve movement precision. Force Pro features up to 5 hours of battery life and supports recharging using the CANBUS port, USB-C, and a DC-in port.

According to DJI, users unfamiliar with more complex systems, such as Master Wheels, can “quickly become proficient” with a product like the Force Pro. To improve efficiency, DJI offers an optional handlebar, which itself can be used to mount accessories including thumb controllers and monitors.

Availability

Both Master Wheels and Force Pro are available to preorder now from DJI flagship stores and authorized pro dealers, though shipping doesn’t start until June. Master Wheels is offered in three variants: a single wheel control module for $ 2,500, a 2-axis model for $ 6,000, and a 3-axis model for $ 8,000. Force Pro costs $ 1,200.

Pond5 and DJI to offer licensable collection of aerial footage

A new partnership between DJI and stock video library Pond5 might make it easier for Part 107 certified drone operators to connect with potential stock footage customers – and vice versa.

Anyone with a DJI drone and an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot certification can apply to participate as a video creator. Accepted applicants’ videos will be included in a Pond5 + DJI collection. Prospective customers will also be assured that the videos in the collection were shot by FAA certified drone operators, and can therefore be used for commercial purposes.

NEW YORK MARCH 28, 2018 – Global content marketplace Pond5 and DJI, the world’s leading manufacturer of civilian drones and aerial imaging technology, today launched an innovative collaboration to develop a premium collection of licensable aerial footage.

By applying to join this program, pilots operating with a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which is required for commercial use, will be eligible to have their footage included in a series of collections shot exclusively with DJI drones.

Pond5 will showcase these collections to its millions of users, while denoting video clips shot by licensed pilots in searches for customers who need to ensure their video assets comply with Part 107. DxO acquires Nik Collection from Google and will continue to offer it for free… for now

Look alive, Nik Collection fans: the software suite is back from the (mostly) dead. It will change hands from Google to DxO, who will continue to offer it as Photoshop and Lightroom plug-ins, as well as incorporate it into their own software. DxO will offer a new flagship application called PhotoLab, a version of OpticsPro that will incorporate Nik Collection’s U Point technology.

We spoke with Aravind Krishnaswamy, a Google Engineering Director, and DxO founder/CEO Jerome Meniere about the acquisition. Krishnaswamy mentioned Google’s need to focus on its Photos application, but that they want the Nik community to have a future, and a place to continue using the suite’s tools.

That’s where DxO picks things up. The Nik Collection in its present state will continue to be offered for free – for now. Meniere hints that this may not always be the case, and DxO plans to develop a new “Nik Collection 2018” for mid-next year. Meniere also mentions that they’d like to work with the Nik community to take the software in a direction that they’d like to see it go.

Not surprisingly, Nik-developed Snapseed is not included in the transaction, and will remain with Google. The company plans to continue actively developing and improving the mobile image editing app.

Varjo ’20/20′ VR headset to offer ‘human eye resolution’ bionic display

Poor display resolution is one of the hurdles VR needs to overcome if it’s going to gain traction with a larger audience. That’s why Finnish company Varjo is actively developing a virtual reality/augmented reality headset codenamed ’20/20,’ a moniker that refers to its ‘human eye resolution’ display. While the Oculus Rift offers approximately 1.2MP for each eye, Varjo aims to far exceed that resolution at 70MP, though with a twist: the ’20/20′ headset tracks which objects the wearer is looking at, rendering those objects at a very high resolution while objects in the wearer’s peripheral vision are lower resolution.

Varjo hasn’t gone into great detail about the technology behind its headset, though Engadget reports that it is using what the company calls a ‘bionic display’ alongside ‘foveated eye tracking,’ the combination of which makes its VR ’10 years ahead of the current state-of-the-art.’ The company claims to employ scientists who previously worked at Intel, Microsoft, and NVIDIA, among others.

The company goes on to claim that its ’20/20′ headset can also be used for augmented reality and mixed reality applications, though details on both are slight at this time. Likewise, information on Varjo’s launch plans are unclear, though the company states that pro-tier ‘Varjo-branded products’ will start shipping in the fourth quarter of this year. Western Digital’s new SSDs offer faster speeds and higher capacities

Hard disk manufacturer Western Digital acquired SSD specialist SanDisk last year. Now we are seeing the first fruits of the new relationship in the shape of two new SSD lineups – one under each company’s brand name – that are the first to deploy SanDisk’s new 64-layer 3D NAND chips. According to Western Digital the new chips offer ‘lower power consumption and higher performance, endurance and capacities.’

The new Western Digital Blue and SanDisk Ultra 3D lines are identical in terms of capacity, controllers and performance specs but Western Digital’s lineup includes a device in M.2 2280 format factor, which SanDisk’s doesn’t.

According to the spec sheets performance should be very good. The 256GB versions read at 550 MB/s and write at 525 MB/s. The larger capacity SSDs are even a touch quicker at 550 MB/s and 560 MB/s respectively. And the new SSDs are not only fast but also reliable. Western Digital states the mean time to failure (MTTF) of all devices as 1.75 million hours. If you think the new drives could help fulfill your storage and archiving needs, you’ll be happy to hear they are quite affordable; 256GB drives start at $ 100. Pricing information for the larger 500GB, 1TB and 2TB models is not available yet.
