Woodskin: Flexible Hybrid Material Makes Wood Modular

28 May

flexible wood

In essence, it has the look and feel of wood, but the flexibility of fabric, all rolled into one composite mesh that is durable but able to be molded into all kinds of creative patterns both temporary and permanent.

flexible wood mesh furniture

From its Italian creators at MammaFotogramma: “Woodskin is a composite material, developed and patented by our design firm. This highly flexible surface – a sandwich wood and high performance mesh – was created by a process of excavation with a CNC cutting machine. By dividing the rigid plan of wood into small triangle, the material is freed – able to be shaped as the maker desires.”

The result has advantages of both decorative malleable materials and functional solid systems, enabling a wide range of potentials for use in furniture and interior design. Following a broader trend in complex 3D architecture, the mesh of CNC-cut Russian plywood stitched together with layers of vinyl makes the most abstract shapes possible.

Under 400 SF: New Modular Micro-Apartments for NYC

16 May

[ By WebUrbanist in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

nyc micro apartments

With New York City’s inexorable growth, 1980s legislation barring the creation of 400 square-foot, one-to-two-person apartments has been lifted. And the results are in: award-winning compact units ranging from 250 to 330 square feet each have arrived.

nyc modular prefab units

The solutions, sans traditional square-footage restrictions, involve both production and living innovations. They make the most of modular components and prefabrication, on the one hand, and utilize adaptable floor plans, copious common spaces and expansive rooftop decks to extend livable areas on the other.

nyc unit plan components

Anyone who has spent time in ultra-dense yet highly-organized cities like Hong Kong, Tokyo or London knows that every square foot counts in terms of cost savings, and the less you have, the more you need to creatively make use of what is there.

Per NYC.gov and CBS New York and via ArchDaily,“Succeeding 33 international proposals and providing an innovative housing model for New York City’s micro-apartments, a team consisting of Monadnock Development LLC, Actors Fund Housing Development Corporation and nARCHITECTS was selected as winner of the adAPT NYC competition. Construction on the pilot project will begin by the end of the year and residents are expected to move in by 2015.”

09 May

colorful storefront

A blend of fun, flexible, efficient and honest, The Gourmet Tea shop design in Brazil’s biggest city is both regional and universal, responding to everyday needs for opening and closing while also attractive to passerby pedestrians.

Designed by Alan Chu (images by Djan Chu), the storefront is a patchwork of brightly-colored squares and reflects the brand and its rich variety (35 flavors) of organic teas to be found within.

But the patches are more than decorative – they unfold in various ways to reveal everything from the store’s signage to its purchasing counter and shelves full of wares.

Despite its apparent complexity, it is ultimately built of inexpensive plywood and folds down into a space-saving box in a few simple steps, making it a cost-effective solution for street-side vending.

Equinox modular and Leica X3 concept cameras

15 Mar

leica_x3_2.jpg

What is an ideal camera for today’s smartphone generation? Designers Vincent Sall, Dae jin Ahn and Chun hyun Park have created designs to explore the question. Inspired by the Leica X2, Vincent Sall envisions a Leica X3 that is an extremely mobile version of the high-end compact that folds up and communicates with a smartphone to share its images. Korean designers Dae jin Ahn and Chun hyun Park have put together a modular camera design calling it the Equinox. It reminds us of the Ricoh’s GXR modular system. The ‘core’ consists of the sensor and lens mount that can be attached to various kinds of camera body shells to step it up from a compact interchangeable lens camera to a large DSLR. (via Yanko Design & Petapixel)

5 Room-in-a-Box Designs Form 100% Modular Home Interior

modular interior collection

For the space-saving fanatic who hates to leave even one square inch unused, or the minimalist who wants everything to work smoothly and simply, this collection may be the ultimate(albeit ambitious and not-inexpensive) all-in-one solution.

modular space furniture collection

Rolands Landsbergs designed the Boxetti Collection to address every major type of living space, “driven by three basic design principles – functionality, advanced technologies and contemporary aesthetics of minimalism. Each of Boxetti modules is designed to achieve maximum efficiency of particular demands for functionality and suitability.”

Five boxes form the basis of the system: a bedroom box with a bed, closet and more; a living room box with couch and tables; a media center with television, music player and stereo speakers; an office with seating and work surfaces and a kitchen with storage, cooking and food preparation surfaces and spaces. Each one uses the same language of angular geometries, glossy white exteriors and warm orange interiors.

From the designer: “The capability of the modules to be transformed into compactly solid blocks is essential for the design concept in order to obtain an unobstructed and comfortable space – free of uselessness. The Boxetti Collection is a handmade product – the quality of materials as well as structural and technological solutions endues the collection to the extent of exclusiveness.”

Resetting Creative Wireless Modular Speakers

25 Jan

Applies to D5x, D3x and DSx
Video Rating: 3 / 5

My very first theme review 😀 I think, that like I said, too many Winterboard themes or widgets make it confusing. If you have 5 that are clearly labeled then that’s fine, but 20 themes are just bamboozling o.0 But everything else is themed nicely, the sidebar on the left and right for the SB and for Notes remind me a lot of Alienware and the other apps are extremely well done and complete. FINAL RATING: 8.5/10 Custom sounds, a CK theme and an SBSettings theme would make it a 9.5/10. The theme is superb and fantastic, but missing sounds, which make a huge part of a theme :/ But I still love the weather and calendar widgets and this is all available on Cydia for .99 thank you xpprem for letting me have the theme for free so I could do this review. -D3xus twitter.com d3x.us

This is part 2 of musician Robert Rich discussing the Synth Tech MOTM synth he is using on his current live tour. Additional info about Robert can be found on his web site hrobertrich.com I took the oportunity to record video clips of this evening on my Nikon D300s camera using an AF-S Nikkor 35mm lens. Sound was recorded just using the camera’s built in mic, which while not optimal, yeilded reasonably good results. Thank you for watching and don’t forget to watch part one!

09 Jan

Polaroid-im1836.png

Sakar International has formally announced the distinctly Nikon-esque iM1836 – a modular camera system wearing Polaroid branding. Details are scarce – with the company able to give little information (and some of that being improbable), but the first model is said to be an Android-based, Wi-Fi-connected camera with Ricoh GXR-style interchangeable modules with the sensor built into the lens. Further bodies and adapter modules are promised to allow use of Pentax K, Nikon F and Micro Four Thirds lenses.
