[MODIFIED] Search Engine – Why Did A Particular Site Appear in a Search?

12 Aug

A few reasons why a result from a search engine may not have anything to do with what you are looking for.

Ever perform a web page search, visit a resulting site, and find absolutely nothing on the page relevant to your search query?

First, use your browser’s find tool to search the page for the keyword(s) in question – press Ctrl+F, or Command+F if you are on a Macintosh. You should then be able to see if the page references your search word or phrase directly….

[MODIFIED] Buying a Digital Camera – What Does “Body Only” Mean?

07 Aug

When viewing digital camera listings for sale, why are some cameras listed as body only?

When comparing digital cameras and looking through sales ads, you may notice some cameras are listed with the phrase “body only”.

A “body only” camera means that the camera is most likely not a compact or prosumer camera but a higher-end digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera. Unlike other digital cameras, digital SLRs allow you to replace the lens, allowing for different degrees of wide-angle and telephoto shots (think skyline photos versus close-ups of birds high in trees). Plus, some lenses are ‘faster’ than others (ones with a larger aperture), allowing you to shoot even clearer photos in low-light conditions without necessarily using a stabilizing device such as a tripod (although these are always recommended when they can be used)….

[MODIFIED] Google Image Search – Search For Icons or Other Specific Image File Types

03 Aug

Query Google for icons, BMP, GIF, JPG, PNG, or SVG files on the Internet.

With Google’s Image Search you can find images found on websites across the Internet. Several types of filters are available, allowing you to limit your searches to faces, photos, clip art, or line drawings.

However, what if your needs require you to search for icons, or certain types of images such as BMPs, GIFs, JPGs, PNGs, or SVGs? Just add the following to the end of your search query:…

[MODIFIED] Google Search Engine – Automatically Open Results in a New Tab or Window

02 Aug

Save time browsing Google results by opening websites in a new tab or window, keeping the search results visible.

As mentioned in a previous MalekTip, if you open Google results in a new browser tab or window, you can more easily return to your search results without having to use the “Back” button or re-enter your search query. However, this requires you remembering to manually do so every time. If you wish, you can have Google automatically perform this task for you:

(Note this tip was updated on 7/29/2012, and Google’s interface is subject to change.)…

[MODIFIED] Google Search Engine – Look for Stock Quotes and Charts

01 Aug

Search for stock quotes, charts, and related company news and information using the Google search engine.

To search for stock quotes using Google, you don’t have to search for the phrase “stock quotes” or “online stock quotes” if you know the company’s stock exchange abbreviation. Just enter the symbol directly into Google’s search box, such as:

* AAPL – Apple…

[MODIFIED] Digital Fireworks Photography – Equipment Preparation Before the Shoot

01 Aug

Make sure your digital camera and accessories are ready to take plenty of great fireworks photos.

Preparation is the key to any successful digital photo shoot. Before you go out to a celebration to shoot photos of fireworks, whether it is the US Fourth of July, Boomsday on Labor Day, New Year’s Day, or other special occasion, make sure your equipment is ready:

* Obviously if it is legal and feasible (due to large crowds) to bring one along to where you are shooting photos, a tripod is crucial to getting the best, clearest photos. Otherwise you will need to hand-hold your digital camera very steady and do tricks such as increasing the ISO level to take quicker photos due to the low amount of available light. If you are using a dSLR, bring and attach any image stabilization lenses you may own to help offset the inevitable camera shake….

[MODIFIED] Digital Night Photography – Two Ways to Prevent Camera Shake

01 Aug

Your digital photos at nighttime need not be blurry if you use one of these techniques.

While most digital camera manuals describe the self-timer mode, where the camera takes a picture several seconds after the shutter speed is pressed, as “good for portraits”, the self-timer mode can be very useful for night photos as well.

Most night photos, especially in situations where you cannot reliably use flash, require a shutter speed of half a second or longer else the subject will be too dark. This is to compensate for the lack of available light. Unfortunately, these situations, especially if you are unable to use a tripod, can result in camera shake….

[MODIFIED] Digital Urban and Cityscape Photography – Look Outside the Main Business / Financial District

01 Aug

Step outside of a city’s main district for some of the best skyline digital photos opportunities.

Instead of taking the usual cityscape photos while inside the main Financial or Business Districts, you may want to scout out areas outside of the main ‘hustle and bustle’ to take wide-angle skyline photos that showcase more of a city’s architecture.

In Chicago, instead of just taking Loop pictures from the Chicago River and other well-photographed vantage points, consider heading out to Navy Pier to take a cityscape photo on the lakefront. Or, another great photo opportunity is north at Lincoln Park; shoot south, towards the skyscrapers, and part of Lake Michigan will be in view….

[MODIFIED] Digital Camera Memory – Should You Buy a USB 3.0 Card Reader?

01 Aug

Advantages and disadvantages of a USB 3.0 memory card reader.

While most computers at the time this tip was written support USB 2.0, not all support USB 3.0, a higher-speed version of the USB standard. If you perform a lot of digital photo manipulation, copying gigabytes of photos between memory cards and various computers, upgrading to USB 3.0 may make sense in that it could save you time.

Unfortunately, if you are using older memory cards or memory cards geared towards average consumers instead of high-end hobbyists or professionals, you may find the purchase cost not worth the money. Medium or lower-range memory is rated at a lower transfer speed that may not take advantage of the benefits USB 3.0 offers. Also, transfer speeds between USB 3.0 readers vary, so the cheapest reader may not result in the best performance….
