This tip defines the following computer memory terms: kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, petabyte, exabyte, zettabyte, and yottabyte.

Computers and storage mechanisms (CD-ROMs, hard drives, USB flash drives, DVD-ROMs, Blu-ray Discs, etc.) need to hold much larger values than what a byte can hold (0-255). Thus, the terms kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, petabyte, exabyte, zettabyte, and yottabyte were created to represent such large amounts of information.

The definition of a kilobyte (KB) is 1,024 bytes; however many people think of it as 1,000 bytes….

[MODIFIED] Disk Usage Utility – Export Folder Contents to TXT or HTML for Printing, with ID3 Tag Support

PrintFolders generates TXT or HTML files containing lists of directory contents for later distribution or printing.

For Windows users, while there is a free way to print directory contents, output customizations may take some work. Those who need more flexibility can try out PrintFolders, which generates TXT or HTML files containing the contents of a folder and its subfolders, or of all files on a drive. This file can be printed, shared, or stored with your backups as a file collection catalog. ID3 tags are supported, allowing you to record extra data regarding your MP3 music.

The output file can be configured: choose whether or not to include subfolders and limit the subfolder depth, toggle file extensions, support and display ID3 tags, limit files to those matching a filter, and include description headers for the folders. While the HTML output does not support stylesheets, you can change the background, title background, table border, text, and link colors, and a custom title may be supplied….

[MODIFIED] Google Gmail – Change Your Name When Sending E-Mail

Use a nickname or your business name when sending e-mail from Gmail.

Normally when you send e-mail from Gmail, your e-mail’s “From” name is the name you used to sign up for the service. However, if you’d rather use the name of your business or your favorite nickname, you can make this change.

1. After signing onto Gmail, click “Settings” on the top-right of the Gmail webpage….

Track Santa Claus using sophisticated equipment from NORAD.

Merry Christmas! A fun site for the young and young at heart, NORAD (the North American Aerospace Defense Command) has set up a worldwide Santa Claus tracker website. Powered by Google, you can view Santa’s location as he zips across the world in his reindeer sleigh delivering toys. Santa Cams are set up to record the visit, “ultra-cool, high-tech, high-speed digital cameras pre-positioned at many locations around the world only on December 24th”. You’ll also be able to see how many cookies Santa munches on.

As Santa has gone high-tech, you can also track him via the Google Earth application, allowing the young and old to do some learning as they follow his flight. You can also follow NORAD as they track Santa Claus via their Facebook, Twitter, and Picasa pages. Plus, his location is available on your mobile phone. And, there’s even a gadget for iGoogle….

If you don’t have a photo-quality printer or would just rather not use up toner and paper, there are many places you can go to print out your digital photos. Example locations include photography, drug store, and big-box grocery chains. While these locations may offer self-service kiosks, many of them as well as other web-based companies let you upload your photos over the Internet. Printouts can either be picked up later or delivered.

[MODIFIED] Digital Photo Processing – Adjust Sliders, Try All Options in New Photo Editing Software / Plugins

Experiment with your digital photo editing software and plugins. Move sliders to the max and enable advanced options.

A great way to learn how to use digital photo editing software and plugins is through experimentation. When modifying your digital photos with such software, you’re bound to come across slider controls, whether you are modifying brightness, contrast, color balance, color saturation, etc. Sliders are also popular with filters. These controls let you fine-tune adjustments so that you can either change your photos a little or a lot.

When using sliders to adjust image features, especially if the sliders are linked to an auto-preview feature so you can see the results of your changes before actually applying them, consider going ‘all out’ and moving the sliders all the way to one side. Instead of merely modifying your photos with a 5% increase of contrast, 5% color shift from red to blue, etc., view dramatic changes to your photos. This may make it easier to see the effects of the color or filter, and then you can move the slider back to get the results you really want….
