World’s Largest LEGO Model: Star Wars X-Wing Starfighter

24 May

[ By Steph in Art & Sculpture & Craft. ]

LEGO Star Wars X-Wing 1

Forty-two times larger than the toy set currently available in stores, this Star Wars X-Wing Starfighter is made of over five million LEGO bricks weighing a whopping 45,000 pounds. Assembled in the LEGO model shop in Kladno, Czech Republic, the model is 43 feet long and 11 feet high with a wing span of 44 feet. It was unveiled in New York City’s Times Square on May 23rd, and will be on display for Memorial Day weekend before reaching its final destination at Legoland in California.

LEGO Star Wars X-Wing 2

The model had to be carefully engineered with a steel framework system in order to withstand all of the travel, breakdown and re-assembly required to transport it across the Atlantic Ocean and from one side of America to the next.

LEGO Star Wars X-Wing 3

It took an international team of designers, builders, engineers, mechanics and logistics experts over a year to devise the plan that brought the massive model from concept sketches to reality. The time it took to construct the model, which is made using the same LEGO bricks sold at retail, was 17,336 hours, or about four months.

LEGO Star Wars X-Wing 4

The model can seat multiple fans in the cockpit for photo opportunities, and its four rear engines light up to a glowing neon red. “We thought it would be a great idea to say ‘What if you took this, scaled it up to the size of what a real X-wing looks like, and here’s the end result,’” LEGO Master Builder Erik Varszegi told MTV Geek.

LEGO Abandonments: Home-Made Model Haunted Houses

lego abandonments

Hundreds of hours and in some cases over one hundred thousand pieces have gone into the creation of this series of seriously detailed LEGO models, each constructed to replicate the processes of decay in miniature.

lego victorian decay series

Michael Doyle makes these largely-Victorian marvels piece by piece, but of course creating something that looks intentionally chaotic is in many ways more challenging than making a conventional model home.

lego abandoned haunted house

From the artist: “To my eyes, patterns of decay find a more pleasing path than an untouched object. A roof collapsed by the weight of snow, side shingles ripped by the force of winds, substructures rotting, insects and weather gnawing the exposed surfaces.”

lego deconstruction build process

“I can picture those windy days where a shingle flies off. Or the sudden creaking, cracking and burst of tinder giving way under snow’s heavy hand

lego deserted building photos

And for anyone interested in a strange slice of abandoned-faux-home ownership, he still has prints for sale of some of the works featured here as well as his other gravity-and-time-defying LEGO creations.

Top Model Interview with Sarah Deanna

29 Jan
Sarah Deanna and I got together last week and sat on the rooftop of her Soho loft to discuss her career. She explains what helped her in the beginning when she started out and was testing with new photographers, giving some great advice to those of you starting out in the industry and working with agency models.

I remember the first time I met Sarah Deanna. She came to a casting I held for a NYC handbag client about 4 years ago.  I loved her comp card and had wanted to work with her for a long time before I met her. What struck me the most about her was not only was she really beautiful, she was a lovely person. Warm and compassionate, she really appeared to be beyond the outer beauty notion of gorgeous…..she was a awesome girl all around. We’ve worked together on a number of projects since our first meeting and there’s a great chemistry between us. She takes direction well, can move like a champ and she’s as professional as a model can be. The camera loves her, no doubt! She’s done editorials for Italian Vogue, German Vogue, French, L’Official, Amica and Elle. She’s walked runway shows for Dolce Gabbana, D & G, Oscar, Versace, Armani, Donna Karan and Calvin Klein. And her partial client list includes Stella McCartney, Neiman Marcus and Versace! She’s definitely risen to the TOP of her field!!

It was fun to sit with someone in our industry and talk about how she was discovered and how she has made it to the top! And how she wrote a book while doing it! The thing I love most about Sarah Deanna is that she gives back to the industry, helping other models learn how to achieve the weight necessary in the modeling industry in a healthy manner. Her book Supermodel YOU is coming out next year by Hay House! You can follow her on Twitter @SupermodelYOU! I’m so proud of her and I’m excited to share with you guys this short but sweet little interview we did. This is the first interview video and I promise more to come!

Augmented 3D Printing: Architectural Model Overlay App

21 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

augmented 3d reality

Augmented reality meets architectural modeling in a remarkable best-of-both-worlds hybridization of two essential technologies for architecture designers, builders and (especially) clients. You have to see this video to believe it:

Inition takes a physical (real-world) model, places it on a pattern-mapped background, and presto: point your iPad at the object and all kinds of additional layers of information begin to map themselves onto the object, shifting as you change perspective.

augmented 3d printing architecture

Real-life simulations can thus be applied to the model, including wind and other weather patterns, day versus night views, pedestrians, trees, egress routes and traffic patterns. It helps visualize the kinds of things that are hard to picture purely on the screen, but generally impossible to show in actual space (let alone in context with map underlays and structural reveals).

augmented reality model simulations

From the creators: “The iPad is a fantastic platform for AR, making it easy to deploy and fun to use. Combined with fluid graphics, reliable tracking and the right content, we believe it is a game-changer in this new medium. We create bespoke apps for clients that can be pre-loaded or made available for download on the App Store”
