convertible off grid car

Forget the trailer and start trailblazing – this emission-free and fully-electric vehicle can juice up just like its Tesla cousins, but can also use photovoltaics and solar sails to recharge well off the beaten path.

Picture the three-wheeled Ecco as the latest in a long-standing series of streamlined and transforming vehicles for dwelling  in, starting with Dymaxion and continuing to Airstream and through Volkswagen. Except, for the first time, conventional fuel is not required.

A light aluminum-and-class frame unfolds, stretching fabric into place and expanding the living space when stationary. This action also allows the driver to tilt up the sun-gathering elements for maximum charging capabilities.

World’s First Mobile Research Station Opens in Antarctica

28 Mar

[ By Steph in Architecture & Public & Institutional. ]

First Mobile Research Station Antarctica Main

Built under some of the most extreme conditions on planet Earth, the Halley VI Research Station by Hugh Broughton Architects is now serving as a mobile home base for Antarctic expeditions. The facility is located on the floating Brunt Ice Shelf, and can be moved inland on its ski-like feet to avoid being stranded as the shelf drifts. Hydraulic rams enable it to be raised above accumulating snow.

First Mobile Research Station Antarctica 2

The $ 25.8 million research station was constructed over 36 weeks spread out over four years of Antarctic summers, and consists of seven interlinking blue modules that serve as laboratories, offices, bedrooms and energy plants. A two-story red module offers up to 32 crew members social space in the summers, with that number dwindling to 16 in the three winter months with total darkness, when temperatures dip as low as -56 degrees Celsius.

First Mobile Research Station Antarctica 4

In fact, the wintering team often includes no scientists at all – it typically consists of technical specialists including a vehicle mechanic, a doctor, an electrician, a plumber, electronics engineers and meteorologists to keep the scientific experiments running. Halley VI was shipped to Antarctica in 2007 after a trial-run assembly in South Africa, but due to the extreme weather conditions on-site, it only became ready for use in February 2013.

First MObile Research Station Antarctica 3

Halley VI replaces the 20-year-old Halley V, and is the sixth to be built on the Brunt Ice Shelf. The location for this research facility has long functioned as a ‘natural laboratory’ for the Earth’s magnetic field and the near-space atmosphere. It is under the auroral oval, resulting in frequent displays of the magnificent Aurora Australis natural light display overhead.

Mobile 3D-Printed House Factory in a Shipping Container

Dutch 3D Printed House 1

Yet another candidate has entered the race for the world’s first 3D-printed house, with a mobile 3D printing factory in a shipping container that can produce the components on-site. Dutch studio DUS Architects plan to use the ‘KamerMaker‘ machine to print a full-size canal house in Amsterdam, one piece at a time. Work will start within the next six months.

Dutch 3D printed House 2

The other two other concepts currently in the works, ProtoHouse 2.0 and Landscape House, also aim to get started on their own 3D houses by this summer.  What sets the DUS Architects concept apart is the fact that its printer is mobile. The KamerMaker is 3.5 meters high and easy to transport from one place to another.

Dutch 3D Printed House 3

The house, which will be built in a developing area along the Buiksloter-canal, will act as a hub for 3D printed architecture. DUS aims to print the entire facade this year, as well as the first room; other rooms will come later. Once complete, the first floor will become a ‘welcoming room.’ The entire construction site will be an event space to show off the capabilities of this technology.

The KamerMaker can print structures out of recyclable materials available on location, including biodegradable plastics, giving it great potential for emergency relief architecture. DUS plans to use polypropylene as well as plastic recycled on-site to build the facade and first floor of the house. Each room in the house will be dedicated to a certain type of research, including a ‘cook room’ where researchers will experiment with 3D printing in potato starch, and a ‘policy room’ where permits for printed structures will be discussed.

Confessions of a camera snob: DPR reviewer explores mobile photography

14 Mar

Camerasnob.jpeg

When Dpreview.com camera reviewer Amadou Diallo found himself assessing a smartphone camera for our mobile photography site, Dpreview Connect, he had his doubts about what the hardware could accomplish. But his review of the HTC X One (published late last year) challenged his preconceptions about camera phone photography and inspired him to embrace both the limitations and the possibilities of shooting with a mobile device. Read more about his experience on connect.dpreview.com.

Mobile Photo Awards 2012

06 Mar

Gewinner in der Kategorie „Street“: „Hiding from the light“ von Oliver Lang

Wiki Your City: Mobile App Lets You Geo-Tag Articles

02 Mar

[ By Steph in Gadgets & Geekery & Technology. ]

Wiki GeoData App 1

Wikipedia is making it easier than ever to participate in the aggregation of user-provided knowledge and information with its GeoData extension, a mobile app for iPhones and Androids. This app enables users to geo-tag articles and images and instantly upload their own images, right there on location.

Wiki GeoData App 2

The GeoData extension will provide app developers with a new spatial database with which they can create maps and improve Wikipedia’s current app and the ‘Nearby’ add-on. The Nearby function takes you on a virtual tour of notable sights in your area, directing you there and giving you the history and other pertinent data.

Wiki GeoData App 3

The more spatial coordinates are added to Wikipedia entries, the more accurate and interactive Wikipedia’s mobile app can be. The mobile app currently offers search suggestions, full text search, saving pages for offline viewing, sharing pages via social media and reading pages in other languages.

Wiki GeoData App 4

The coolest thing about this function will be discovering all sorts of interesting locations and monuments in your neighborhood that you probably didn’t even know existed. To learn more about how it works, check out the Wikimedia Foundation blog.

Hands-on with the HTC One at the Mobile World Congress

28 Feb

_DXO0379.jpg

While most smartphone manufacturers have opted for a 13MP camera module, HTC is going the opposite way in terms of sensor resolution, equipping the HTC One with a 4MP camera. Hwever, the photodiodes that collect the light on the HTC’s sensor module are similar in size to those found in enthusiast compact cameras such as the Canon Powershot G15, and as such, the new HTC sensor promises much better low-light performance than conventional smartphone cameras. We take a closer look at what HTC is calling ‘ultrapixel’ technology at connect.dpreview.com
