Perfect lighting for a white background

05 Nov

A white background will photograph grey unless you light it. So in this video I demonstrate the problem and my lighting solution, using three studio lights. I must thank Hasselblad UK for the loan of the studio and the H4D camera that I used in this video. www.gavtrain.com

Natural Lighting Tips from Bob Holmes – Natural Light in Travel Photos

03 Nov

www.silberstudios.tv Who better to get natural lighting tips from than a three-time Travel Photographer of the Year award-winner? We’re at the studio of photographer Bob Holmes for today’s Marc Silber Show – Advancing Your Photography! He shares some techniques you can use to work with natural light and take better photos, no matter where your travels may take you. Bob has been all over the world and his travel photos have appeared in National Geographic, Departures, and 46 books as the sole photographer. Working outdoors on most of his trips, Holmes is an expert at using natural lighting in photos. He loves looking at natural light, and his unique tip is that you need to picture light the way your camera sees it, rather than the way you see it. And the key to learning how to use natural lighting is to practice — you can’t become a great photographer in a week, but you will get there by shooting as much as you can.

Portrait Photography using continuous lighting

29 Oct

Gavin Hoey explores with the use of the smick.co.uk 3 head super softbox continuous lighting kit to take portraits. The kit is powerful and versatile, this is an alternative to studio flash for taking portraits, the main advantage is that you see what you get. The kit uses energy saving compact fluorescent daylight bulbs which means that they produce great light and not much heat compared with tungsten redhead type lighting. It can be used as video lighting as well as still photography making this a very versatile bit of kit. www.smick.co.uk

Portrait Lighting for Photography and Video!

20 Oct

There are several lighting positions that photographers have developed over the years. People like George Hurrell, who used tungsten to shoot stars, used these lighting positions. Learn to identify what a butterfly or Rembrandt light is. Knowing these positions, and where the light placed to create them, will help you see how photographers light their images. These are departure points from which you will create your own look and direction. Its hard to depart from someplace you have never been there. This will teach you the basics and give you a good foundation to build on. This video is not as slick as some of the others we have done but it has great basic instructions on portrait lighting. (Don’t miss the ending its the most exciting part!)
