Olloclip launches Connect X lens system for Apple iPhone X

Smartphone accessory lens maker Olloclip has launched a new mobile lens system that is designed specifically for use with the Apple iPhone X.

With a number of interchangeable lenses and a “lens mount” that clips onto your device, Connect X works in a very similar way to previous Olloclip systems. However, the new lenses come with a number of features that are exclusive to Apple’s flagship smartphone, including a lens mount that aligns perfectly with the iPhone X’s front and rear cameras, allowing for use of the accessory lenses with both camera modules.

In addition, the lens mount is expandable and therefore usable in combination with most protective phone cases. The Connect X system also comes with a pendant stand designed to carry the set of lenses, but that also works as a mini-tripod.

There are six lenses available for the Connect X system:

  • Super-Wide: Four-element lens with 120° field of view
  • Ultra-Wide: 155° field-of-view
  • Fisheye + 15x Macro: 180° wide-angle spherical effect + 15x magnification
  • Telephoto: 2x optical zoom
  • 14x + 7x Macro
  • 21x Macro

The system is now available to order on Olloclip.com. Individual components range from $ 60 to $ 80. You can also purchase a Mobile Photography Box Set for iPhone X which contains the Connect X lens mount plus Super-Wide, Fisheye, and Macro 15x lenses. It will set you back $ 100. The bundle will also be available at Apple Stores starting in June.

Tamron launches 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD lens for Sony FE, costs $800

In February, Tamron announced development of a 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. We got our hands on a prototype at CP+, and spoke to Tamron about the lens in our CP+ interview, but we still didn’t have much in way of details about this exciting piece of Sony FE glass… until now.

Tamron officially launched the lens this morning, revealing full specs, release date, and pricing information for the first third-party standard zoom to be created natively for the Sony FE mount. Here’s a video introduction to the new zoom lens:

The lens was designed from the ground up for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras, and engineers at Tamron focused on three main features: optical quality, portability, and silent autofocus. The lens weighs in at just 19.4oz (550g) and measures just 4.6in (11.6cm) long. And while the body was made of polycarbonate instead of metal (to save weight) the lens is still ‘moisture resistant’ so you can use it in inclement weather.

Optically, the lens is made up of 15 elements in 12 groups, including an XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) element, a LD (Low Dispersion) element, a GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) element, and two hybrid aspherical elements that have been arranged “in the optimal arrangement to correct aberrations and reduce the overall lens size,” according to Tamron.

Finally, as the name suggests, the lens features Tamron’s new RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus motor. This new stepping motor offers quick, precise, and “exceedingly quiet” autofocus that Tamron claims “virtually eliminat[es] extraneous AF drive sounds during video recording.”

3. Minimum Object Distance of 7.5 in.; Working Distance 2.24 in.

The Model A036 breaks from the convention that the MOD of a zoom lens must be fixed throughout the focal range and achieves a MOD of 7.5 in. at the 28mm wide-angle end which delivers a maximum image magnification of 1:2.9. The working distance of just 2.24 in. from the front element allows photographers to enjoy close-up shooting that emphasizes the sense of perspective unique to wide angles. At the 75mm telephoto end, the 15.3 in. MOD provides an image magnification of 1:4, thereby enabling close-up shooting with a pleasantly blurred background similar to a macro lens.

4. All-new “RXD” stepping motor AF unit is excellently quiet and therefore perfect for video capture.

The AF drive incorporates a sensor that accurately detects the position of the lens and an RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) stepping motor unit optimized for AF control. This achieves quick and precise AF operation, allowing users to maintain pin-sharp focus on continually moving subjects or when filming video. Additionally, the AF motor is exceedingly quiet, virtually eliminating extraneous AF drive sounds during video recording.

5. Consistent with Tamron’s exciting, ergonomically superb next-generation design.

The Model A036 features a mirrorless-oriented design that adheres to Tamron’s new “human touch” lens design concept. As signified by the Luminous Gold brand ring, careful attention to detail has produced an optimum shape reflecting the characteristic look of a Tamron-branded lens, whether on its own or attached to a camera body. 6. Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating for weather protection.

Environmental seals are located at the lens mount area and other critical locations to prevent infiltration of moisture and/or rain drops and afford Moisture-Resistant Construction. This feature provides an additional layer of protection when shooting outdoors under adverse weather conditions. Also, the front surface of the lens element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water- and oil-repellant qualities. The lens surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, moisture or oily fingerprints, allowing for much easier maintenance.

Meyer-Optik Goerlitz unveils ‘world’s fastest’ 75mm F0.95 Nocturnus lens

German lens manufacturer Meyer-Optik Goerlitz is expanding its range of F0.95 aperture lenses with the release of the Nocturnus 75mm. The lens will have the world’s widest aperture for the focal length, according to the company, and will offer sharp detail even when used wide open.

Like the Nocturnus 50mm F0.95 lll, this full-frame lens will be available in mounts for Leica M, Sony E and Fujifilm’s X series cameras, and will feature a 15-bladed iris that Meyer says will help to create bokeh ideal for portrait work. The aperture will be click-less to allow silent operation for filmmakers, and will close steplessly to F16.

The hand-made lens uses only five elements in five groups, and will have a closest focusing distance of 0.9m/35.4in. It will take a 72mm filter, will weigh about 750g/26.4oz and can be ordered in a black or a silver finish.

Already in the 1920s, Meyer brought lenses to market which were the fastest lenses of their time: the Kinoplasmat 75/f1. 5. Meike announces full frame 85mm F1.8, its first autofocus lens

Chinese accessories brand Meike has announced it will introduce an autofocus 85mm F1.8 lens for Canon and Nikon full-frame DSLRs. In addition to adding another (very likely) affordable third party option to the mix, this will be the company’s first AF lens.

Details are a little thin on the ground, but early marketing materials suggest it will be a lightweight and compact lens with an all-metal body construction. The optical formula will use nine elements in six groups, and all elements will be multi-coated on both sides. Close focus will begin at 0.85m with a maximum magnification of 1:1.8. The lens will be 79.5mm long and will accept a 67mm filter.

Meyer Optik is reviving Dr. Rudolph’s APO Plasmat 105mm F2.7 lens

Meyer Optik has announced its new APO-Makro-Plasmat 105 F2.7 lens, a modern version of one of the classic Plasmat lenses developed by Dr. Paul Rudolph 105 years ago. As with previous Meyer Optik revivals, the company is funding its product on Kickstarter, where it explains that the new Plasmat 105 “offers natural sharpness, unbelievable color reproduction, and a glowing bokeh united at every step of the aperture.”

The name Makro, Meyer Optik explains, was chosen by Rudolph in reference to the Makro-Plasmat’s suitability for 35mm, not macro, photography. The company says that while its revamped version of the lens offers performance that’s “in the spirit of the Plasmat lenses,” it created the model with modern camera gear in mind.

The APO-Makro-Plasmat 105 has a 105mm focal length, 60mm width, an F2.7 – F22 aperture, 1.1m / 3.6ft minimum focusing distance, manual focusing, 6 elements in 5 groups, as well as 15 steel aperture blades with an anti-reflex coating.

As with the original Plasmat lenses, Meyer Optik says its remake offers a unique combination of glow, bokeh, plasticity, and sharpness, explaining:

The lens is sharp but it takes away the razor cut, sterile, microscope like sharpness and replaces it by an even sharpness around the subject that flatters it and pleases the eye of the spectator. Thus the lens fills the whole space with amazing depth and at the same time with a smooth transition from focus to softness.

The company plans to offer APO-Makro-Plasmat 105 for 35mm cameras in the following mounts: Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E, Fuji X, and Leica M. A model will also be released for medium-format mirrorless cameras in both Fuji GFX and Hasselblad X1D mounts.

The lens has already reached nearly three times its funding goal on Kickstarter, where backers who pledge at least $ 1,050 USD (offer expires in the next 17 hours) are promised an early bird lens with a serial number that matches where they fall on the backers’ list—the first person to pledge will receive serial number 001, the second person will receive 002, and so on. Once this first early bird offer is gone, backers will be able to get the lens for $ 1,100, $ 1,150, and eventually $ 1,300 when all early bird deals are gone.

Tokina Fi?RIN 20mm F2 FE AF lens will ship June 1st, costs $950

Tokina announced the Fi?RIN 20mm F2 FE AF—its second prime lens in the premium Fi?RIN lens lineup for mirrorless cameras—back in February, and we got to see it in person at CP+. But it was only this month that they revealed when the lens would ship, and only earlier today that we finally know the price.

According to Tokina itself, the autofocus lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras lens will begin shipping on June 1st; and according to online retailers who finally put the lens up for pre-order today, the price will be $ 950.

There’s not much more we can say about the lens that we didn’t already reveal in the announcement post and hands-on at CP+. The Fírin 20mm F2 FE AF is simply the autofocus version of Tokina’s first high-end Fírin lens. The two lenses share an optical formula, and the addition of AF is simply meant to offer “more options for end-users to choose from according to the purpose and style of shooting.”

Review of the Lensbaby Burnside 35 Special Effects Lens

A Lensbaby lens is a dream come true for artistic, creative, and ground-breaking photographers. A company made famous by their innovative effect lenses and optics, Lensbaby has captivated the industry for nearly 14 years. This company’s newest pride and joy is the Lensbaby Burnside 35, an f/2.8 lens that is unlike any other in their arsenal.

Swirly Bokeh

The Burnside 35 features the iconic “swirly bokeh” that Lensbaby is famous for. This effect is seemingly influenced by the Petzval objective which causes a swirly bokeh and vignette, and it is created by pairing two doublet lenses with an aperture stop in between.

The first lens corrects spherical aberrations and the second lens corrects for astigmatism. However, the pairing creates the swirly distortion that we all love.

You can adjust the intensity of the swirly bokeh by changing the aperture: f/2.8 will be most intense, while something like an f/16 won’t have any swirl at all. The thing that I find most compelling about Lensbaby is the fact that all of the effects are in-camera/in-lens, hence saving you a lot of time on the editing front.

Built-in vignetting

I was very intrigued to stumble upon this lens, as it has a feature I have never before seen in any other – a built-in vignette slider. Instead of needing to darken the edges of your photograph in post-processing, you can do an in-camera effect and save yourself the editing trouble.

It’s a manual lens

That being said, much like other lenses in the Lensbaby collection, this one is fully manual. The aperture is adjusted by rotating the aperture cuff at the very back of the lens rather than in the camera as is common for other lenses. The vignette slider is located near the cuff on the opposite side of the lens.

When rotating either the vignette slider or the aperture ring, you can feel each stop as there feels to be a minor indent that pops into place – a welcome feeling when wanting to make quick adjustments without looking up from the lens.

The focus is also manual, which may cause a bit of a learning curve for photographers that rely heavily on autofocus. However, I found that it was rather easy to see when the focus was captured or not and I was able to become proficient in a matter of a half hour.

Keeping the fully manual aspect of the lens in mind, this may not be the right piece of equipment for fast-paced action shooting. That being said, the artistic look of Lensbaby Burnside 35 can even make out of focus images look intentionally fuzzy (although any stylistic choice should look intentional, not as a mistake).

Build

The lens’s build feels incredibly sturdy (it’s made of metal) and it is visually striking. Though I’d consider the lens fairly light in comparison to other 35mm lenses, it is still a significant weight that adds to the impression of a very sturdy build.

The lens does not come with a case, and I’d highly recommend one. Despite a sturdy build, a good bump could crack something, and that’s not a risk worth taking.

The metal front lens cap is easy to slide on and off but holds very tight when it’s on; exactly how you’d want it to be. The vignette slider in action

The vignette slider makes a significant, visual difference in the image. It’s great to be able to see right-off-the-bat how the image will look at the various vignette stops. As well, from a purely aesthetic perspective, it can be rather fun to watch the vignette open and close on the glass itself – it’s a bit like a reptilian creature blinking.

Do keep in mind that the frame will darken significantly when the vignette slider is set at its most closed point. As such, I actually found myself using the vignette slider almost like a neutral density filter to bring out the colors of a very bright sky.

The versatility of this lens is also notable enough to bring up. You are certainly not obligated to photograph at a low aperture number and a shallow depth of field, when bumping the aperture up to f/16, architectural photographs are exceptional at the 35mm focal length. Add the vignette slider and you have a dramatic image worthy of any gallery.

Overall

This 35mm lens is nice and wide and can focus up to 6 inches away from the glass itself, excellent for macro photography. There isn’t much distortion on the subject that is in focus in the center, which is much appreciated.

Compatible with both full-frame cameras and crop sensors, I tested the Burnside 35 on my Canon 5D Mark IV (full-frame) and Canon 7D Mark II (crop sensor) to see how well it performed. I was brilliantly satisfied with its abilities for both, though it was clear to see that the full-frame yielded even more fantastic results than the crop sensor.

It’s worth mentioning that I was exceptionally pleased with how fluid the manual focus was as well as the vignette slider, both moved with ease and can be adjusted with just one or two fingers! This lens is exceptionally sharp when the focus is right, making sure that whatever you want to be the subject is very clear.

The equipment is small and easy to carry, another welcome sight in lenses.

Video: $7000 superzoom lens + DSLR compared to $35 smartphone lens

NYC-based filmmaker Casey Neistat recently compared a $ 35 clip-on smartphone lens with a $ 7,000 DSLR (the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II to be precise) and superzoom lens. The results, to no one’s surprise, were not in the smartphone lens’ favor. However, Neistat expresses surprise at the (admittedly very minor) capabilities of the cheap lens, saying, “So, I very gently, very reluctantly, recommend this total piece of sh*t $ 35 lens because it sort of almost works.”

That recommendation is given to potential buyers who need something to use with a smartphone. If a more capable lens and camera are within budget, the resulting content will benefit greatly from them, as the comparison screenshot below pretty clearly demonstrates:

Google lens can now identify pet breeds, create pet photo books and compile pet movies

Google first introduced Google Lens with the Pixel 2 smartphone. The feature uses Artificial Intelligence to power its visual recognition algorithms and provide information about whatever your smartphone’s camera is pointed at, and recently it was made available on iOS devices and integrated in the Google Photos app.

With Google Lens now available to a very large customer base many more users will be able to enjoy some new functions. The app is now capable of not just identifying the pet you are pointing the camera at, but also the exact breed – pretty impressive. This works for cats and dogs, and reportedly also some other kinds of animals. Some additional information about the breed is provided as well.

In addition, Google Photos can now automatically create a photo book starring your pet. Again, artificial intelligence is used to find the best pictures. If you look what you see and are based in the US or Canada, all you need to do is decide if you prefer a hardcover or softcover and hit the order button.

There is also a movie option which in a similar way as the photo book feature. In the Assistant tab in Google Photos you’ll find a movie button. You’ll then be able to choose the “Meow Movie” or “Doggie Movie” option and select your pet. The best photos of your pet are then compiled into a movie, accompanied by pet-themed music.

Fujifilm GF 250mm F4 R LM OIS WR medium format lens announced

The longest telephoto lens in Fujifilm’s medium format lineup has arrived with the introduction of the company’s GF 250mm F4 R LM OIS WR.

The lens has a 35mm equivalent of around 200mm, which can be further extended via the 1.4x teleconverter also announced today. The 250mm F4 has 16 elements, including 1 super ED and 2 ED elements, a linear focus motor and 5-stop image stabilization (per Fujifilm). The minimum focus distance is 1.4m while the maximum magnification is 0.22x.
