M & M: Leica SL Typ 601 real-world gallery updated with M-series lens samples

The Leica SL Typ 601 is the German manufacturer’s first foray into the full-frame mirrorless world, offering a 24MP CMOS sensor in a weather-sealed, milled-aluminum body. Three SL lenses have been introduced for the system, but an M-mount adapter opens up a number of possibilities for the camera. We took advantage of some limited time to shoot with the SL and the Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 ASPH and 50mm F1.4 – see what the combination looks like. Read more

Leica introduces SL system with Typ 601 full-frame mirrorless camera and lenses

Leica has introduced the full-frame SL system, including the SL Typ 601 ILC and three compatible SL lenses. The SL uses a 24MP CMOS sensor adapted from the Leica Q, and true to form its weather-sealed body is cut from a single block of milled aluminum. Read more

Go big: Leica SL studio and real-world sample gallery

Leica has just unveiled its first full-frame mirrorless camera, the SL Type 601. The new camera uses a modified version of the 24MP CMOS sensor from the Leica Q in tandem with a Maestro II processor, allowing ISO 50-50,000 shooting, 4K video recording and 11 fps continuous shooting. With early access to a full production SL, we’ve been able to test it against our studio test scene as well as in a variety of real-world shooting conditions. Read more

Red Dot Camera wants to bring the Leica experience to your iPhone

Red Dot Camera is a new camera app for iOS by Lifelike Apps. Its makers, who call themselves avid Leica M shooters, have tried to convert the look and feel of the legendary camera series to an iPhone app complete with rangefinder-style manual focusing. Read more

A lot to like: Real-world Leica Q gallery posted

The Leica Q certainly wowed us when we spent a little time with a pre-production unit back in June. Its 24MP full-frame CMOS sensor, 28mm F1.7 stabilized lens and 3.68M dot equivalent viewfinder cut an impressive figure, something modern and classic all at once. Now we’ve been out shooting with a full production camera and have been quite impressed with our results – take a peek. Read more

Hands-on: Leica claims fastest in the world for its new CMOS S (Type 007)

Announced last September, Leica’s medium format S camera presents a number of key changes that bring it up to date with the latest models from its main competitors. Although the S Type 007 retains the same pixel-count as the previous Type 006, the company has switched from its traditional CCD sensor to a CMOS unit. It also claims the title of world’s fastest framerate in its class. We spent a little time getting to know the S Type 007. Read more

Leica M9 falls from balcony onto granite, granite comes off worse

Leica has a reputation for making pretty rugged cameras, going back more than 100 years. But nobody would expect a rangefinder to survive a fall from a balcony, onto granite tiles. However, if a recent post on Chinese social network Sina Weibo is to be believed, that’s exactly what happened to a Leica M9 recently, and somehow it survived the experience.
