Tokina launches 85mm F1.8 FE prime for full-frame Sony cameras

Tokina has announced the release of its new atx-m 85mm F1.8 FE lens for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless camera systems. This lens marks the debut of Tokina’s new ‘atx-m’ mirrorless lens series, which will offer various lens designs for different mounts and sensor formats.

The 85mm F1.8 FE lens is constructed of ten elements in seven groups and features one low-dispersion (SD) element. Tokina has also used its Super Low Reflection Multi-coating throughout the lens, which Tokina claims ‘provides natural color and excellent contrast along with superior water, oil and dust repellant properties.’

Autofocus is driven by Tokina’s ST-M motor technology and the lens was designed in accordance with Sony’s licensed specifications, meaning it’ll work with in-body image stabilization, as well as all of Sony’s AF modes.

Paul C. Buff launches LINK 800WS plug-and-play LED flash unit

Paul C. Buff Inc., the company known for its professional lighting products, has introduced LINK 800WS, a new portable flash unit that features up to 800 watts of power, multiple shooting modes, 1 to 10 adjustable f-stops and a digital LCD. The product’s name refers to the company’s effort to link its ‘past products with currently photography needs,’ according to the PCB.

The LINK 800WS flash unit is Paul C. Buff Inc.’s most powerful and versatile light ever launched. The product packs a daylight-balanced LED modeling light and detachable battery into an all-metal housing; the model supports umbrella rods up to 9mm and has a stand mount that supports up to 5/8in stands. The portable flash unit is fairly compact at 16.5cm x 12.1cm x 32cm (6.5in x 4.8in x 12.6in) with a weight of 3.9kg (8lbs, 7oz) including the battery.

In addition to HSS / TTL modes, the LINK 800WS also features an Action Mode and a Color Mode. Other features include 3.5s recycle time, 8.8cm (3.5in) LCD, plug-and-play support for 100 to 240 voltages, +/- 100K color consistency at any power level, support for speeds up to 1/154,000s and an included magnetic rubber diffusion dome.

The LINK 800WS is currently listed on the Paul C. Buff Inc. website for $ 895.95, but the company says it won’t be available to purchase until Spring 2020. The light will work with the new HUB remote and BUFF mobile app on iOS and Android. Buyers will have the option of choosing a LINK 800WS bundle that includes the flash, charger, battery, and the HUB remote for Nikon or Canon (or, later on, Sony) for $ 1,196.

Manfrotto launches new ‘Pro Rugged’ line of SD, Micro SD memory cards

Italian tripod and accessory manufacturer Manfrotto has launched a range of memory cards that it claims is the strongest on the market. Comprising of SD, MicroSD and CompactFlash models, the Pro Rugged series is claimed to combine high-speed performance with waterproof, crush-proof and temperature-proof build quality that can withstand extremes of use and conditions.

The SD cards particularly are sealed against ingress of water and dust, and can remain underwater for up to 72 hours without suffering damage. They are made from a solid moulded piece of plastic and are said to be three times stronger than normal cards and able to survive a 20kg impact. Tested in temperatures of between -25 degrees C to 85 degrees C, the SD cards come in 64 and 128GB capacities and have a V90 rating that sees 280MB/s and 250MB/s read/write speeds.

The Pro Rugged MicroSD cards are V30 rated, offer 90MB/s read/write speeds and come in 64 and 128GB capacities, while the CompactFlash cards are UDMA 7 rated, offer 160MB/s and 130MB/s read/write speeds and also come in 64/128GB varieties. The CF cards aren’t waterproof but Manfrotto claims they are made from tougher materials than most cards, that they will last longer and that they can withstand a 35kg impact. They are suited to use in temperatures of between freezing and 70 degrees C.

The SD cards are half price at the moment on the Manfrotto website and are listed at $ 57.50/£47.50 and $ 112.50/£92.50, while the CF cards are $ 80/£65 and $ 150/£125 and the MicroSD cards are $ 32/£27 and $ 42/£35. Visit Manfrotto’s website for more information.

TTArtisan launches 11mm F2.8 fisheye lens for Sony E-mount systems

Chinese lens company TTArtisan has announced the availability of its new 11mm F2.8 fisheye lens for Sony E-mount camera systems.

The lens’ optical formula consists of 11 elements in 7 groups. It’s constructed of aluminum and brass and features an aperture range of F2.8-F16 with clicked aperture points.

It has a minimum focusing distance of 17cm, a ten-blade aperture diaphragm and weighs in at 485g. It is currently available to order for $ 215.

CAMERADACTYL creator launches Kickstarter campaign offering camera files for 3D printers

Ethan Moses, creator of the Homonculus 69 camera introduced last summer, has launched a Kickstarter campaign for CAMERADACTYL Brancopan, a 3D-printed panoramic camera that supports Mamiya Press lenses and 35mm film. Specifically, Moses is seeking funds to cover the costs of releasing the STL files for the camera, enabling 3D printer owners to print and assemble their own cameras.

In his Kickstarter campaign, Moses explains that increased demand for his cameras has resulted in considerable time spent printing, assembling and shipping the units. This has taken up time that would otherwise be spent researching and developing additional cameras.

According to Moses, if the Kickstarter campaign reaches its $ 12,000 initial goal, he will release the STL files for the Brancopan camera to Kickstarter backers first, then, later on, he will release them to the general public on May 1, 2020. As well, the files will be joined by videos that teach DIYers how to print the components, assemble the camera, calibrate it and then use it.

Moses explains on Kickstarter:

This Kickstarter is my shot in the dark, my test to see if people will pay for the R&D on an open-source project in a specific way. I am not sure that this will work, or how people will feel about it, but I do know that if the Kickstarter should fail, nobody gets charged anything and I can always go back to selling cameras through the mail, but if it does work it could change the way I work and the projects that I get to tackle, and the types of cameras and photographic tools available to the public now, and in the future.

The released files, assuming the campaign progresses to that point, will be licensed for personal use only. The estimated delivery date for Kickstarter backers is January 2020. Some Kickstarter pledge options include laser cut film counter dials, video chat troubleshooting and more.

Leica launches M10-P ‘Ghost Edition’ and new Summilux-M 90mm F1.5 ASPH lens

Leica has teamed up with New York-based horology company HODINKEE to launch the Leica M10-P ‘Ghost Edition’ camera styled after the vintage timepiece owned by Ben Clymer, founder and CEO of HODINKEE. The ‘Ghost Edition’ version of the M10-P includes a Summilux-M 35mm F1.4 ASPH lens with the same style.

The natural wear and tear on a wristwatch bezel results in a ‘ghosting’ aesthetic that inspired the M10-P ‘Ghost Edition’ design, according to Leica. This special edition camera doesn’t feature the company’s iconic red dot logo; its body and included lens sport a matte gray finish alongside silver and white accents. Gray cowhide leather and white enamel-filled engravings round out the ghosted aesthetic.

The Leica M10-P ‘Ghost Edition’ retains the same specs as the regular model. Leica is limiting this special edition to 250 camera sets globally with availability starting today. Each set features a serial number, a certificate of authenticity and a gray rope strap with black leather accents. The set is priced at $ 14,995 through HODINKEE.

Joining the special edition camera set is Leica’s new Summilux-M 90mm F1.5, an extremely fast telephoto prime lens designed for portrait photography. Leica describes this new lens, which has the longest focal length in the Summilux-M lineup, as offering ‘a breathtakingly shallow depth of field.’

The Summilux-M 90mm F1.5 lens features eight elements in six groups, including two aspherical elements made from specialized glass and a floating lens element. The company says that its lens design nearly eliminates the distortion and vignetting associated with fast lenses and that the lens hood helps cut down on reflections and unwanted light.

Leica customers familiar with the Noctilux-M 50mm F0.95 ASPH lens will find the new offering very similar in terms of design, build and depth of field, according to the company. The Summilux-M 90mm F1.5 ASPH lens is now available from Leica’s stores, boutiques and dealers for $ 12,995. The lens can be used with the Leica SL and SL2 cameras using the M-Adapter L.

Photography podcast ‘The Group Chat’ launches with critical look at the preset market

A new photography podcast called ‘The Group Chat’ has published its first episode: ‘Presets and Why They Suck.’ The episode is free to watch on YouTube, where hosts Christian Gideon and Nick Goodwin discuss why presents ‘are so detrimental’ to the photography industry.

In a statement to PetaPixel, The Group Chat co-creator Gideon explains, ‘Our first episode is a hard-hitting look at why the industry of selling presets to photographers is mostly BS.’ As the comment indicates, the podcast episode contains adult language and may not be suitable for certain environments.

Moment launches new ultra-wide Fisheye 14mm Lens with ‘bi-aspherical’ lens design

Smartphone lens manufacturer Moment has announced its new Fisheye 14mm Lens, an add-on lens that Moment claims ‘is the widest, crispiest shot you can have on a phone.’

The lens features an all-new optical design made specifically for the latest smartphones from Apple, Google, OnePlus and Samsung. It features a bi-aspheric design that Moment claims uses 15-percent more of the image sensor than its existing Fisheye 15mm lens.

This design results in a 170-degree field of view that’s 30% wider than the 120-degree field-of-view found on most ultra-wide-angle lenses in newer smartphones, such as the iPhone 11 Pro.

The resulting image can be de-warped using a new distortion correction filter in Moment’s Pro Camera app (Android, iOS). The de-warping feature is available in the iOS app today and the feature will make its way to the Android app ‘in the next few weeks.’

FiLMiC launches Firstlight, a stills camera app with Raw capture, live analytics and more

FiLMiC, the company best known for its FiLMiC Pro video camera app with features for professionals, has branched in the still photography market with the launch of Firstlight. With FiLMiC Firstlight, iPhone owners get access to more features than offered on the stock camera app, including support for TIF and DNG Raw formats, anamorphic adapter support, the ability to embed copyright info and more.

FiLMiC announced the availability of Firstlight v1.0 on November 12. The company has included the live analytics feature from FiLMiC Pro in its new still photography app, as well as adaptive film grain, custom film simulations, an RGB Histogram, an Auto Exposure (AE) mode, tap/swipe-based focus and exposure controls, a lens selector and vignette.

FiLMiC boasts a number of ‘professional camera tools,’ including grid overlays, a burst mode, flash and timer, expanded shadow details, the ability to select either HEIC or JPG formats, multiple aspect ratios (4:3, 16:9, 3:2, 1:1, 5:4), HDR controls on the latest iPhone models, and Bluetooth support for ‘most’ camera shutter remote controls.

In addition to the free version of the app, FiLMiC gives users the option of paying for access to premium features, making it possible to configure the burst mode, adjust the vignette, apply film grain, use an anamorphic adapter, use a custom function button, configure the exposure and focus controls, and more.

The app is free to download from the iOS App Store now. The premium features can be unlocked via either a $ 0.99 monthly subscription or a $ 7.99 annual subscription.

SLR Magic launches four APO-MicroPrime Series lenses for Canon EF mount

SLR Magic has launched four EF-mount lenses as part of its APO-MicroPrime line:

  • APO-MicroPrime CINE 25mm T2.1
  • APO-MicroPrime CINE 32mm T2.1
  • APO-MicroPrime CINE 50mm T2.1
  • APO-MicroPrime CINE 85mm T2.1

The APO-MicroPrime lenses feature optical elements paired with a ‘unique optical design’ to correct longitudinal chromatic aberrations, according to SLR Magic. As a result, the company says bright and dark transitions in images are rendered without colorful artifacts, particularly when it comes to highlights.

Each lens has a 150-degree focus throw, T22 – T2.1 aperture and an 82mm intenal filter size alongside an 85mm outer front.
