Lomography Petzval 80.5mm F1.9 MKII Art lens launches on Kickstarter

Lomography has launched its twelfth Kickstarter campaign with its new Petzval 80.5mm F1.9 MKII Art lens. This 180th Anniversary Edition of the 19th-century portrait lens features 4 elements in 3 groups, F1.9 to F16 aperture, 67mm filter, 0.8m minimum focusing distance, 30-degree FOV and weighs 440g (0.9lbs).

Lomography’s new Petzval 80.5mm MKII Art lens sports a stopless aperture diaphragm, Waterhouse Aperture System, helicoid focusing mechanism, and what the company describes as a ‘velvety swirly Bokeh’ when the shot is wide open. The stopless aperture diaphragm and helicoid focusing mechanism mean users will be able to adjust the f-stop and focus while recording.

The new Petzval offering was designed for use with full-frame cameras but is said to still offer ‘great results’ with cropped sensors. The Advanced Bokeh Control Edition of the lens will feature a bokeh control ring with seven different bokeh swirl levels; this version of the lens will only be offered in black anodized aluminum.

The Petzval 80.5mm F1.9 MKII Art lens will be made available in Nikon F and Canon EF mounts in black anodized, brass satin and black painted brass colors. Lomography is offering the lens to Kickstarter backers who pledge at least $ 290. The lens is estimated to start shipping to backers in June.

Moondog Labs launches a 52mm filter holder for smartphone cameras

If you’d like to use your collection of lens filters not only with your DSLR or mirrorless lenses but also your smartphone camera, Moondog Labs’ latest product might be worth a closer look: the company’s new Multi-Camera Filter Mount lets you attach photo filters, for example neutral density or polarizing filters, with a standard 52mm diameter to your smartphone.

The holder works with any phone for which bayonet mount cases from manufacturers such as Moment, Rhinoshield or Sirui are available. The Moondog filter holder then clips onto the bayonet mount and, with a filter attached, covers all lenses in a multi-lens array, allowing for use with smartphone ultra-wide, standard-wide and tele lenses. Larger filters can be attached using a step-up ring.

The Moondog Labs Multi-Camera Filter Mount is available now for $ 35 on the Moondog Labs website.

Yuneec launches E30Z 30x optical zoom camera for H520 Hexacopter drone

Drone company Yuneec has launched its new E30Z 30x optical zoom camera for the H520 Hexacopter drone. The camera features a 2.13MP 1/2.8in CMOS sensor capable of capturing 1920 x 1080 video at up to 60fps, as well as JPEG still images. The model features 1/30 – 1/6000s shutter speeds, 100 – 6400 ISO, 30x optical zoom, 6x digital zoom, pan/tilt support and both auto and manual white balance controls.

According to Yuneec, users can fully zoom the E30Z camera in 2.55 seconds. Drone operators get access to the camera’s various settings directly through the ST16S controller’s touch display. As the images show, the E30Z camera features a built-in 3-axis gimbal with 360° rotation support and accuracy of ± 0.02°.

The E30Z is one of the multiple camera models that can be used with the H520 Hexacopter drone, which Yuneec says it built for professionals and industrial purposes. The drone features six rotors that the company says are able to keep the drone stable even in high-wind environments.

The E30Z 30x optical zoom drone camera isn’t yet listed in the Yuneec online store; its price and availability remain unclear. The H20 Hexacopter, meanwhile, is available from Yuneec now in multiple bundle options starting at $ 3,999.99.

Moment launches new line of variable ND filters for DSLRs, mirrorless cameras and drones

Moment has announced the launch of its first variable ND filters for cameras and drones. The company is offering a total of four variable ND filter products at this time, one designed for the DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone. According to the company’s website, it designed its new filters to ‘hit the sweet spot on affordability, functionality, and quality.’

The Moment variable ND filters are made with machined aerospace-grade aluminum and Schott B270 Pro Cinema Glass. The three products designed for use with cameras utilize ‘unique geometry and laser-etched graphics’ that enable photographers to view the stop using the viewfinder. As well, the camera filters feature a design that prevents cross-polarization when rotating the filter.

In addition to the camera filters, Moment has also launched a filter for drones, specifically the Mavic 2 Pro. According to the company, this is the first cinema-grade variable ND filter for the Mavic 2 Pro. Offered in 2-5 Stop and 6-9 Stop varieties, this product is made from fused silica glass coated for ‘cinematic color and rugged durability.’ As with the camera filters, these drone filters are designed to prevent cross-polarization.

All four new variable ND filter products are available from Moment now. The Mavic 2 Pro Cine Variable ND filters are priced at $ 80 each; the camera filters are available in 67mm, 77mm and 82mm sizes for $ 150, $ 160 and $ 170, respectively.

DNP Photo launches new dye sublimation printer with mobile support and more

DNP Photo has released its new QW410 compact dye-sublimation photo printer featuring a 4.5in print head, 5.9kg (13lbs) weight and relatively small dimensions at 20 x 19.6 x 24cm (8 x 7.75 x 9.5in). When compared to the maker’s DS-RX1HS and DS620A models, the QW410 has 28% and 35% lower power consumption, respectively.

The model offers a number of key features, including a lay-flat printing function that reduces print curl, support for glossy and matte photo paper, an optional wireless accessory that add supports for directly printing from Android, iOS, Windows and macOS, as well as print speeds as fast as 19 seconds for 4 x 6in prints.

The QW410 features a 300 x 300 dpi resolution and support for the following print sizes:

  • 4 X 6in
  • 4 X 4in
  • 4.5 X 8in
  • 4.5 X 4.5in

Photographers who need to print photos while away from the office can pair the QW410 with an optional portable battery for use without an outlet. DNP Photo also offers an optional carrying bag. The photo printer is available to purchase from several retailers like B&H Photo in the USA, Canada, and Latin America for $ 469.

Laowa launches new 65mm F2.8 2x Macro APO lens for Fuji X, Canon M and Sony E-mount

Venus Optics has unveiled its latest lens, the Laowa 65mm F2.8 2x Macro APO lens for Fuji X, Canon M and Sony E-mount camera systems. This marks the first macro lens Venus Optics has designed specifically for APS-C mirrorless cameras.

The lens offers a 2:1 magnification ratio and a 100mm full-frame equivalent focal length. It’s constructed of 14 elements in 10 groups, including three extra-low dispersion elements. Venus Optics says the lens was ‘carefully designed to remove both [lateral chromatic aberration and longitudinal chromatic aberration] to an invisible level.’

It has an aperture range between F2.8 and F22, and features a nine-blade aperture diaphragm. The minimum focusing distance is 17cm (6.7in) and the front filter thread is 52mm. The lens measures in at 100mm (3.94in) long, 57mm (2.24in) in diameter and weighs 335g (11.8oz).

The Laowa 65mm 2x APO Macro lens is available on Laowa’s website for $ 400. It’s available for Fuji X, Canon M and Sony E-mount camera systems.

Spider Holster launches updated Hand Strap and Lens Collar Plate, as well as two new products

Spider Holster, the company best known for its camera-carrying accessories, has launched four new products, including updated versions of its SpiderPro Hand Strap and its Lens Collar Plate. All four products are available from the company’s website now, making it easier to carry around a camera, attach it to tripods and tote around all of your photography accessories.

Most notable among the new products is the company’s new SpiderPro Hand Strap v2, a new version of the camera-carrying strap already offered by Spider Holster. This strap can be used with mirrorless and DSLR cameras, this time featuring Nylon cores for slowly conforming to the shape of the user’s hand.

As well, the updated version can be installed more quickly using a three-snap attachment feature, plus there’s a new Graphite version of the strap made from synthetic Hypalon fiber with a carbon fiber finish. This, Spider Holster explains, is an alternative for customers who don’t want to purchase the leather version. The model is available now for $ 70.

Joining the updated Hand Strap is the new Lens Collar Plate v2, an updated model that can be used to holster a telephoto lens with a tripod collar to the company’s SpiderPro Single and Dual camera-carrying products. The updated version of this product is Arca-Swiss compatible for use with tripods, features a built-in 1/4″-20 thread, built-in hex wrench, as well as a pair of Spider pins and a Spider Tether Bail. The model is available now for $ 55.

Spider Holster has also launched the new Spider Light Z Plate specifically for the Nikon Z6 and Z7 cameras, a model that can be used or without the FTZ Mount Adapter. The Z Plate can be used with any Arca-Swiss tripod in addition to the holster, plus it allows access to the camera’s battery door. The Spider Light Z Plate is currently available to preorder for $ 32.

Finally, Spider Holster has also launched its new SpiderMonkey Ultimate Kit, a bundle that features the entire SpiderMonkey product line, including the SMv2 Tab, Studio Assistant, Rain Cover, rotating and non-rotating Action Grip, Utility Pouch, Backpack Adapter, Bag Strap Clamp and more. With these accessories, users can easily clip a variety of camera gear to belts, backpack straps and bags.

The SpiderMonkey Ultimate Kit is available now in Essentials and Ultimate bundle options for $ 55 and $ 75, respectively.

Plugable launches 512GB version of its Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drive with read speeds up to 2,400MB/s

Back in November 2019, accessory manufacturer Plugable launched its 1TB and 2TB Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drives. Now, roughly three months later, Plugable has announced it’s now offering the same drive in a 512GB capacity for those who don’t need as much space or prefer to keep their content spread across multiple smaller drives.

Like its larger counterparts, the 512GB Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drive is powered entirely through its integrated Thunderbolt 3 cable and features sequential read speeds up to 2,400MB/s and write speeds up to 1,800MB/s. The drive works at full-speed with any Thunderbolt 3-compatible macOS or Windows computer and is backward compatible at USB-C speeds on computers without Thunderbolt 3.

The drive is constructed of aluminum and weighs just 173g (6.1oz).The 512GB Plugable Thunderbolt 3 NVMe drive will retail for $ 200, but is currently available for a launch-special price of $ 180 (when you clip the coupon code).

Paris Musées launches online portal with thousands of historic photographs

Paris Musées, the public institution that manages all of the museums in Paris, has launched a new Collections portal that offers the public access to more than 100,000 high-resolution digital reproductions of classic artwork and photography. All of the content offered in the Collections portal is available under a CC0 license.

In addition to high-resolution images of artwork from such notable names as Rembrandt, the online collection also includes a portal with more than 62,000 high-res photo scans showcasing some of the nation’s earliest photography from photographers that include Pierre Emounts ou Emonds, Eugene Atget, Ernest Charles Appert, Hippolyte Blancard and Roger Henrard.

Because the photos are all under a CC0 license, anyone can download high-resolution copies of the images alongside documents with full details on the photos, including when and where they were taken, which museum they’re located at and the materials and techniques used to produce each print. The institution will also make copyrighted images from its museums available as low-resolution previews.

In its announcement of the new online collection, Paris Musées explains that it receives a large number of requests from students and others who want to view and/or use some of the images from its museum collections. This portal now makes it possible for anyone to quickly locate and download the content.

Edelkrone launches JibONE motion control with mobile app and motorized head support

Edelkrone has launched a new app-controlled jib called JibONE that can be used with the HeadONE and HeadPLUS motorized heads for capturing a variety of shots. The jib supports 50cm (19.6in) of horizontal, vertical and diagonal motion in any direction, including looping motion. Despite its capabilities, Edelkrone says the model is compact enough to store in a backpack.

The JibONE is made from CNC machined aluminum and stainless steel; it measures 61 x 17 x 15cm (24 x 6.7 x 5.9in) when folded and weighs 5.5kg (12lbs) when used with the 1kg (2.2lbs) counterweight. Edelkrone recommends that users keep their setup load to less than 5kg (11lbs). The company says that all DSLR models are compatible with the JibONE.

Operators have two different battery options to choose from for powering the JibONE: LP-E6 and NP-F batteries. Battery life varies based on which are used, but when the JibONE is powered with two Canon LP-E6 14.4Wh batteries (for a total of 28.8Wh), users can expect two hours of continuous operation at full speed or up to 12,000 still images when used in time-lapse mode.

Connectivity comes in the form of Bluetooth LE which enables users to control the jib using an iPhone running iOS 11 or newer or an Android handset running version 5.0 or later. The mobile app offers a simplified interface for recording poses, setting up motion loops, adjusting speed and more. Users can also program camera motions with the jib by manually adjusting the device.

The JibONE is available from Edelkrone now for $ 1000.
