Tamron and Sigma offer firmware update service for Canon EOS 5DS/5DS R live view issues

Tamron and Sigma have both announced updates for their lenses to provide full compatibility with Canon’s EOS 5DS and 5DS R models. Both firmware updates refer to behavior in live view shooting, something that has also caused problems in the Rebel T6s and T6i. This suggests that Canon’s latest models feature a change in the way they drive lenses. Read more

Olympus highlights the issues faced by ‘DSL-Arm’ sufferers, and claims to offer a cure

Olympus USA has produced a spoof documentary that claims to highlight the problems faced by those who spend too long carrying heavy DSLR equipment. The hero of the films, Paul, suffers a condition called ‘DSL-Arm,’ which is characterized by a dramatic lengthening of the right arm as a result of carrying weighty camera bodies and lenses. Read more

Canon issues product advisory for Rebel T6i/T6s

09 May

Canon USA has released a product advisory regarding the sensor defects on its Rebel T6i/T6s (750D/760D) that we reported on last week. The company states that on certain cameras ‘white spots may exist on the optical layer which may result in the appearance of dark circular patterns on the captured image under certain shooting conditions’. These cameras will be repaired free of charge and models that have already been repaired will have a marking inside the battery door. Read more

Phottix highlights compatibility issues with Nikon D750 hotshoe

Phottix, a lighting equipment maker, is reporting an issue where its Odin TTL triggers may not work properly with the Nikon D750. According to a recent blog post the company claims that the D750’s hot shoe design differs slightly from that of other Nikon DSLRs, which causes the pins of the Odin trigger to line up incorrectly. Read more

Sony issues firmware 1.10 for Alpha 7 II

Announced in late November, the Sony Alpha 7 II has received its first firmware update. Somewhat thin on specifics, firmware version 1.10 promises improved image stabilization. The firmware details cite improvements in IS when half-pressing the shutter, in ‘Focus Magnifier’ mode, during movie recording, and with ‘other functions’. Read more

Lens Rentals Canada halts service citing ‘serious issues’ with Canada Post

Lens Rentals Canada has announced that it is temporarily not accepting new orders. A brief notice on lensrentalscanada.com cites ‘serious issues’ with Canada Post Corporation, and states that current orders will be shipped using Purolator Courier. An email that a reddit user claims was sent to him by Lens Rentals Canada is more to the point, stating that a Canada Post employee has stolen equipment in transit. No estimated timeframe has been given as to when orders will be accepted again. Read more

Fujifilm issues firmware update for X-series and fixed lens cameras

Fujifilm has announced firmware updates for a number of X-series and FinePix cameras. Full details of the firmware updates were announced on the company’s blog, and the new firmware versions are now available for download from the global Fujifilm site. Included in this round of updates are the X-T1, X-Pro 1, X-E1, X-E2, X-M1, X-A1, XQ1, FinePix S1, FinePix XP70 and FinePix XP200. Update: Olympus issues emergency firmware fix for E-P5

Update: Following on the release of a significant new v1.4 firmware update for the Pen E-P5 last week, Olympus has issued another fix. Version 1.5 reportedly addresses a problem introduced by 1.4 in which displayed values for shooting parameters did not change. Firmware v1.4 introduced improved Wi-Fi remote control functionality to the E-P5 and a ‘0 sec’ anti-shock setting. The latter was added to help prevent blurred images at certain shutter speeds – our main gripe when we reviewed the camera.
