Instant Magny 35 is a film back that turns SLRs and rangefinders into instant cameras

13 Jun

NINM Labs has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Instant Magny 35, a film back that transforms rangefinders and 135 SLR cameras into instant film cameras. The film back supports Fujifilm Instax Square film and doesn’t require any camera modifications. The instant film back is described as ideal for rangefinders and SLRs from Pentax, Leica, Olympus, Canon, and Nikon.

The Instant Magny 35 film back replaces the original camera back, featuring a total of three attachable components. Once connected, the camera with instant film attachment can be used normally. According to NINM Labs, Magny features an aluminum lens barrel, enlarging optics film back, and an ejection unit.

Features include a built-in dark-slide, on-off switch to prevent accidental shots, automatic film feed, a film ejection button, and an LED film counter. The film back is powered by four AAA batteries. Without the batteries or film, the Instant Magny 35 weighs about 485 grams / 1lbs.

NINM Labs is seeking about $ 50,000 on Kickstarter, where a single Instant Magny is offered for pledges that start at 778 HK$ / $ 99 USD.

German brand Rollei has revived its iconic Rolleiflex twin lens reflex lineup with the new Rolleiflex Instant Kamera. This model—Rollei’s first TLR camera in decades—retains the brand’s iconic look but adds modern features including support for Fuji Instax Mini film.

The Instant Kamera joins a lineup first launched in 1927 with the original Rolleiflex prototype. The brand’s final TLR model, the Rolleiflex 2.8F, was released in 1960, “leaving only vintage cameras behind for true photography enthusiasts,” says Rollei.

The company began exploring ways to revive the Rolleiflex line in 2017, ultimately launching the new Rolleiflex Instant Kamera on crowdfunding website Kickstarter. The reimagined Rolleiflex features the same twin lens system found on the models before it, but has been optimized for use with Fuji’s Instax Mini film.

The Instant Kamera has a built-in electric flash, f/5.2 to f/22 aperture, a magnifier, manual focus (48cm to infinity), Multiple Exposure and Long Exposure modes, an ambient light meter, Fresnel anti-glare coated viewfinder, and a 3-element aspheric lens. Rollei slimmed the Instant Kamera down 30% compared to past twin lens cameras and added simplified buttons and knobs.

Rollei is seeking funding on Kickstarter, where backers can get a Rolleiflex Instant Kamera by pledging at least HK$ 3,100 / $ 395 USD / €325 EUR. Shipping is offered globally, and expected to start for Kickstarter backers in October 2018.

Full specs:

Rolleiflex™ Instant Kamera

An instant camera with the legendary twin lens design and modern features

Rollei™, a well-known German brand, has over a hundred years worth of experience in camera and optics development. Rolleiflex™ is the name of our premier line dedicated to medium format twin lens reflex (TLR) cameras.

The first Rolleiflex™ twin lens reflex camera came out in 1927. For the next few decades, we continued to innovate and push our development of TLRs until we reached our limit. The last Rolleiflex™ TLR update was released in the 1960s – leaving only vintage cameras behind for true photography enthusiasts.

We have never forgotten TLR. So in 2017, we gathered camera enthusiasts, experienced technicians, TLR lovers and other camera manufacturers together in order to brainstorm new ideas for how to re-introduce the TLR for the modern era.

In 2018, after 90 years old birthday of the first TLR, we’re proud to introduce you to the newest edition to the Rolleiflex TLR Camera.

A new instant film camera by Rolleiflex™

Over the years, we’ve received countless messages. And we developed a new idea and adding the twin lens element and classic design aesthetic in a way that meets the needs of today’s users.

Rolleiflex™ Instant Kamera produces high quality images optimized for use with Fujifilm Instax Mini film. You will be amazed by the wide range of apertures from f/5.6 to f/22, accurate focusing from 48 cm to infinity with cinematic viewfinder and the built-in electric flash with automatic light emission control. This allows you to have a taste of instant photography with the well-loved twin lens system that Rolleiflex is known for. We hope to honor our legacy and let all of you enjoy the amazing visuals this camera will produce.

Twin Lens Design: Reinhold Heidecke was inspired to make the Rollei TLRs while photographing soldiers in the German trenches in 1916 – the twin lens design provided a periscope approach to focusing and taking photos which radically reduced the risk of the photographer being hit by sniper fire.

Aperture Control: Enjoy shallow depth of field with f/5.6. This allows you to get the most out of the instant film format and really help your subjects stand out.

Viewfinder Design: A Fresnel anti-glare coated viewfinder that is operated at waist-level allows you the perfect setup for street photography while on the move: shoot photos any time just by looking down.

3-element Aspheric Lens: Takes sharp images bursting with detail, and has a focal length of 61mm.

Magnifier: As with traditional Rolleiflex cameras, our new instant TLR camera includes a magnifier so you can take a closer look.

Accurate Focusing: Adjust the focus manually so you can eliminate excess noise and hone in on what matters most.

Ambient Light Meter: Don’t worry about having to figure out the exposure, simply check the green/orange light to know if the exposure is correct. Then just point and shoot!

Multiple Exposure Mode: Create beautifully layered images by exposing a frame as many times as you like.

Long Exposure Mode: Keeps your shutter open with B mode so that you can unleash your creativity in light paintings or anything you could imagine.

Portable: 30% slimmer than traditional twin lens cameras with simplified knobs and buttons.

Built-In Flash & Flash Off Mode: Lets you decide just how much light you want to shine on your shenanigans.

Instant Films: Uses Fujifilm Instax Mini – the most common instant film and widely available!

We’re confident that Rolleiflex™ Instant Kamera will evoke memories of days gone by when in the hands of people who grew up with one in the 60s. But we also want to introduce ourselves to a new generation of analog photographers to help them release their untapped creative potential.

Polaroid Moto Mod leaked, straps an instant printer to your smartphone

17 Oct

Leakster Evan Blass has tweeted an image showing two Moto Mods, one of which is said to be a Polaroid instant print camera module for printing photos directly from your smartphone. As with any Moto Mod, this particular module will be compatible with the Moto Z handsets, including the Moto Z Play and Moto Z² Force Edition.

The Polaroid module is a device that connects to the back of a compatible Motorola smartphone to give it extra functionality—in this case, printing small instant prints and essentially turning your phone into an ‘instant camera.’ Blass didn’t provide details about the module, but presumably it would use the same ZINK (Zero Ink) inkless printing technology as Polaroid’s existing instant digital camera.

For now this is just a leak, but it’s not the first time we’ve seen the Polaroid Moto Mod; late last month, two images of the same device appeared on the website Technoblog. So it does appear that this attachment is the real deal.

Polaroid is back! Unveils OneStep 2 instant camera and i-Type film

14 Sep

Remember those intriguing teasers Polaroid was scrolling through on its main website last week. Well, yesterday night was when that countdown ended, and it ended with a huge announcement that has the photo industry buzzing. In short: the old Polaroid you knew and loved is back from the dead with a new analog instant camera and a new type of instant film!

Announced on the 80th anniversary of the Polaroid brand, both products are being unveiled as part of a new brand called Polaroid Originals, which merges the Polaroid of old with years worth of work done by Impossible Project to keep that old Polaroid alive. In fact, the Impossible brand is being replaced altogether.

In addition to the new film and camera, you’ll now be able to purchase restored vintage Polaroid cameras and traditional Polaroid instant film in a variety of formats straight from the Polaroid Originals website. But first, let’s dive into that sweet new camera!

The Polaroid OneStep 2

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_9226467734″,”galleryId”:”9226467734″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

The Polaroid OneStep 2 is exactly what it sounds like: the spiritual (and in some ways literal) successor to the famous Polaroid OneStep—you know, the camera Instagram stole its original logo from.

Inspired by the original OneStep, Polaroid says they’ve updated the OneStep 2 “to create a simple, easy-to-use instant camera that works straight out of the box.” It sports a ‘high quality lens’ that can focus from 2ft to infinity, a ‘powerful’ flash, a rechargeable battery that allegedly lasts 60 days on a charge, a self-timer function, and it’s compatible with both the new i-Type instant film and the old 600 series film.

The camera is available in white and graphite, and you can already pre-order yours through the Polaroid Originals website for $ 100.

Polaroid i-Type Instant Film

Speaking of film, Polaroid Originals also debuted a new film format that will look familiar but is actually a bit different. It’s called i-Type, and it joins Polaroid’s vintage films (SX-70, 600, 8×10, etc.) as the newest kid on the block.

The “i” stands for “Incredible” … which is really irrelevant. The important bits is that this film is optimized for the OneStep 2—and, we hope, future Polaroid Originals cameras—is battery-free, and comes in Black and White and Color varieties for $ 16 per 8-pack or $ 45 for two 8-packs of color film and one 8-pack of black and white.

Keep in mind, because this is a battery-free film, it will not work in 600 cameras. That film has its own battery in the film, while the new i-Type OneStep 2 boasts a rechargeable battery of its own.

To learn more about this film or purchase a pack or two of your own, click here.

Vintage Polaroid Cameras and Film

Finally, since the Impossible Project brand is now a thing of the past, the Polaroid Originals website won’t just be a place to buy the new OneStep 2 and i-Type film. You’ll also be able to pick up all of the restored vintage Polaroid cameras and older film formats that Impossible kept going all of these years.

The old Polaroid 600 cameras start at $ 120, the famed SX-70 foldable model starts at $ 380, and Spectra camera models can be had for $ 120 and up. All of them are available on this product page.

And if you need film for those old cameras, you can pick up SX-70 film, 600 film, Spectra film, and even 8×10 sheet film here.

To say this is an exciting announcement for the analog photography world is to undersell this by far. The merging of Polaroid and Impossible project as Polaroid Originals would be big news itself, but add to that a new analog instant film camera and a new type of instant film and you’ve got hipsters, instant photography buffs, and nostalgic shutterbugs like tripping over themselves to support this resurrection.

To learn more about Polaroid Originals or any of the products mentioned above, head over to the brand’s new website here.

Kodak unveils the Printomatic: A point-and-shoot ‘instant print’ camera

12 Sep

There’s a new instant camera in town. Revealed by Kodak earlier today, the Printomatic is a point-and-shoot ‘instant print’ digital camera: meaning the photos it captures with its 10MP sensor are instantly printed out of the side of the camera Polaroid-style while you go on shooting.

Kodak is calling it “the ideal all-in-one solution for capturing and sharing vibrant prints instantly.”

To call the Printomatic a ‘no-frills’ camera is almost an understatement. Available in Gray or Yellow for just $ 70, the 10MP shooter comes with a built-in Li-ion battery, flash, low-battery indicator, print indicator, microSD card slot, and two pictures modes: vibrant color or black & white. In other words, it’s as close to fully automatic as you’re going to get.

The appeal of the camera, at least according to Kodak, is in its simplicity.

“The KODAK PRINTOMATIC is a contemporary camera with a wonderful balance of digital and analog technology,” Steven Overman, Kodak’s Chief Marketing Officer, said in a statement. “It’s an accessible device for anybody who wants to create a lasting memory in a tangible, colorful way.”

Each photo is printed at 2×3-inches on Kodak’s ZINK (stands for “Zero Ink”) Photo Paper, which means it comes out of the camera water-resistant, tear resistant and adhesive-backed.

The camera will be available online and in stores starting “late September” for $ 70, and comes with a 10-pack of ZINK Photo Paper included. ZINK refills are available online in 20 and 50 packs for $ 9 and $ 20, respectively. To learn more about the Printomatic, head over to the Kodak website.

DIYer creates ‘Polaroid’ camera that ‘prints’ instant animated GIFs

01 Sep

It sounds like Harry Potter magic, but it’s not. Industrious DIYer Abhishek Singh recently took to Reddit to show off his own version of an instant camera, one that ‘prints’ animated GIFs instead of photos. Singh built the Instagif Camera himself and based it on the Polaroid OneStep SX-70 camera, though it uses a special hardware cartridge rather than a packet of film.

Singh detailed the entire build process in an album on Imgur, explaining that it features a Raspberry Pi 3 (camera) and Raspberry Pi Zero W (cartridge), PiTFT display, PowerBoost 1000C charger, momentary switch, and LiPo battery… among other things. After designing a 3D model of the camera, the individual components were 3D printed with a Project 7000 SLA printer, painted, and assembled.

The GIF, as demonstrated in the video above, fades into view in a way similar to a Polaroid photo, and the cartridge connects to the camera itself directly, no external WiFi network necessary. Singh has provided the software, a parts list, and instructions for anyone to download and build their own Instagif Camera. All the links are available in the Imgur album and the code is available in GitHub.

Lomography just launched their latest creation on Kickstarter: The Lomo’Instant Square instant film camera. Following hot on the heels of Fujifilm’s Instax Square SQ10, the Lomo’Instant Square uses the same film as the Fuji camera, but puts it in a foldable, fully-analog body. We have a feeling lovers of Lomography’s retro style and shoot-for-the-joy-of-it culture will flock to the Lomo’Instant.

The Lomo’Instant Square’s tagline is that it’s the “world’s first fully analogue camera to work with Fujifilm Instax Square Film.”

Featuring a 95mm (45mm equivalent) F10 glass lens for sharper photos than the plastic lenses in some of Lomography’s toy cameras, the Lomo’Instant Square can be used in “advanced automatic mode” for hassle-free perfect exposures, or more creatively through features like unlimited multiple exposures or the 30-second ‘bulb’ mode.

Here’s a psychedelic intro video to get you acquainted with the new instant camera:

And here are some sample photos captured on the Lomo’Instant Square:

The Lomo’Instant Square has only been up on Kickstarter for a few hours, but already it’s blown past its $ 100,000 funding goal and the number just keeps getting bigger with every reload. In other words: this camera will definitely get made, but there is still a good reason to order yours today if you’re interested.

Lomo is offering a special 35%-off-retail discount for everyone who orders the Lomo’Instant Square during the first 24 hours of the Kickstarter campaign. That means you can get the White or Black versions for $ 130 instead of the $ 200 it will cost you when it hits shelves early next year.

This instant camera is made almost entirely of cardboard

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_9055945704″,”galleryId”:”9055945704″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

A Ukrainian startup is looking to fund mass production of Jollylook, a camera made mostly of cardboard and paper that accepts Fujifilm Instax mini cartridges. The camera exists in prototype form now, and contains no electronic parts – a specially designed shutter and hand crank used to start the development process are operated manually.

Jollylook folds up into an ordinary-looking cardboard box (a little bigger than the box an iPhone comes in, its developer says) when not in use. To start using it, the front unit containing the lens is extended. Set the aperture, raise the viewfinder, frame your shot and fire.

Jollylook’s makers state that Kickstarter funds will be used to create molds for the camera’s lenses, organize production and help with marketing efforts. They’re closing in on their $ 15,000 goal fast with a full month to go. Backers who pledge at least $ 35 are promised one Jollylook camera and an Instax mini film cartridge. Shipping is estimated for June 2017.

Jollylook – The First Cardboard Vintage Instant Camera!

Jollylook is a simple fold out camera for analog photos, made entirely from recycled paper and cardboard. No electronics, batteries or chargers – some paper, a pair of lenses and a cartridge for instant mini photos. Environment friendly – Jollylook uses less materials than used in the packaging of a regular camera. The camera body, the shutter and aperture are made of thick paper and laminated cardboard. Jollylook is as dangerous to the environment as a banana peal!

On January 31st, 2017 – Jollylook, a Ukrainian team of instant photography enthusiasts, starts a 30-days crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.com, to bring Jollylook – The First Cardboard Vintage Instant Film Camera to instant photo lovers.

Oleg Khalip, co-founder and author of the idea: “Once I was showing my son what’s inside the analog camera and how analog photography works, I thought then – “what if the package itself transformed and fulfilled the function of the camera and the picture turned out immediately?!” There was no problem with instant photos technology, people solved this problem long time ago. What remained to create was an analog camera that would be simple and contained in the package, worked properly and allowed to take pictures and get instant results. I had to study the structure of many analog cameras, before being able to make the shutter – the most difficult part in the development was the shutter (no existing structure worked for Jollylook, so I had to invent a new shutter). After picking the right lens and calculating the aperture, we created a folding “accordion” camera body from paper, then the case where the instax cartridge is placed, and we moved to the design, here there where no doubts – it had to be retro with a little steampunk look. Then we had difficulties with the unit for getting the photo out from the cartridge but after testing many options, we achieved a perfect result, photographs are now developed and pulled out with a rotating handle.”

“When moments of life that we see freeze on paper – it is magic!” – says Oleg.

The crowdfunding campaign with a goal of $ 15 000 will last for 30 days and the first mass produced Jollylook cameras are expected in June 2017.
