This issue plays around the conceptual universe of Marcel Duchamp. Not his life, nor his works, just some of his concepts.

    – the medium, as an intellectual tool which goes beyond its specificity mocking it.
    – the work, regardless of its representative and interpretative character.
    – “art”, in terms of conventions, as “amorphous” as possible.
    – “construction”, in which the work is not it’s purpose, but an excuse.
    – interpretations, or rather readings which can coexist despite being seemingly exclusive.
    – objects “aesthetically anesthetized,” lapsed in their likely sight complacency; “rectified”, “assisted”, to give them a new –often unusual- significance. As with the choice of “ready-mades”: “based on visual indifference and a total absence of good or bad taste”
    – works “definitively unfinished”.

    – chess, optic machines, mathematics, geometry, “artifacts”.

Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt
    visual art
Gee’s Bend: The Architecture of the Quilt, which was on view at the Walters Art Museum from June 15, 2007 – August 26, 2007, featured four generations of quilters and demonstrated how the influences of architecture and the environment appear in the quilters’ visual vocabulary. The rich aesthetic traditions that have evolved in Gee’s Bend, a town of about 750 people on a remote peninsula created by a bend in the Alabama River, and its neighboring community, Rehoboth, can be counted among the most vibrant quilting legacies in America. Continually renewing their designs with a combination of tried-and-true techniques and bold innovation, the artists of Gee’s Bend have improvised upon well-known quilting patterns found elsewhere, such as housetop, bricklayer, medallions, and strip quilting. Here you will see a selection of 16 of the over 40 quilts that will be on view at the Walters venue. For more information, please visit thewalters.org/eventscalendar/eventdetails.aspx?e=374.

front jacket, tattered, of the 1982 collaboration between felicia lamport (verse) and edward gorey (illustrations).

one item of note that is less apparent when viewing over the internet, but obvious and appreciated when holding the book in one’s hands: the publisher (everest house and beaverbooks) has no logo, insignia or name stamped or printed on the jacket, and the artwork and names of the author and illustrator, along with the title, are the only visual elements. no price is apparent, and only until the reader opens the book are there any pernicious details on which modern business insists (and even these are reserved and unobtrusive). publishing houses, this is how sensible people like their books presented.

America Needs McGovern: He Can Put It Together
    visual art
"America Needs McGovern: He Can Put It Together" George McGovern. By Larry Rivers, after Malcolm Varon, 1972. Color photolithographic halftone poster. 75.6 x 58.4 cm (529 3/4 x 23 in.): Cycling the viewer’s eyes away from a crossed-out sketch of President Nixon to a smiling photograph of George McGovern, this poster by renowned artist Larry Rivers argued that America needed the 1972 Democratic presidential nominee to put the country’s scattered pieces back together. Using a wide range of visual techniques, including pencil sketches, stencil, photography, collage, varied lettering, and puzzle pieces, the artist gave the poster the informal, youthful, and almost rebellious tone that characterized aspects of McGovern’s presidential bid and famous campaign against the Vietnam War.

    xperia_z_ip5_oppo5_5.jpeg

A Vietnamese site is sharing what it claims are sample images from Sony’s new Xperia Z smartphone, compared with shots from both the Apple iPhone 5 and the Oppo Find 5, both of which will feature Sony’s new 13-megapixel Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor. Although we can’t vouch for the integrity of the sample shots, if they’re genuine, the comparison provides an interesting look at what the Xperia and Oppo Find 5’s cameras may be capable of. Wallpaper 1920×1200 designed with the typefaces listed here below:

    Typefaces in use:

Ricardo Marcins and Erica Jungs (PintassilgoPrints) decorative display face »Changing«
Changing is a lively font, loaded with many automatic interlock pairs that do their magic in OpenType aware applications. Its peculiar design and such choices for letter combinations make this a very dynamic, spirited and useful typeface.

Nick Curtis’ (Nick’s Fonts) retro script face »Fuller Brush NF«

Fuller Brush NF is a snappy single-stroke alphabet from The New Lone Pine ABC of Showcard and Ticketwriting, which Aussie author C. Milnes suggested should be executed with a well-loaded brush, provided the inspiration for this loose, lilting retro script. Its condensed letterforms and tight spacing allow for larger headlines than most brush scripts, and its bouncing baseline adds an extra dollop of visual fun. The PC Postscript, Truetype and Opentype versions contain the complete Latin language character set (Unicode 1252) plus Central European (Unicode 1250) languages as well.

Maze: Matevz Medjas (Gigofonts) decorative headline type family »Gf Selfcensor«

Gf Selfcensor Gf Selfcensor is a compressed unicase typeface best suited for use at display sizes. It works well in magazines/newspapers, posters, flyers, and book covers. When printed in black or red it has the character and seriousness of classic newspaper headline fonts, and when brightly colored it becomes live and playful. Negative leading is not a problem with it, it’s a must!

Description: Theresa Bernstein lived to be approximately 111 years old. During her long life, she gained recognition as one of the first women to paint in the Realist style. While she tried to veil her gender by signing her paintings ‘T. Bernstein’, she was both hailed and flailed for "painting like a man" in the 1910s. Her determination was legendary, when she broke her right hand, she painted with her left. When she could no longer hold a brush, she painted by squirting paint from tubes.
