  • Fashion photographer Lindsay Adler named Rangefinder’s ‘Icon of the Year’

Fashion photographer and Canon Ambassador Lindsay Adler is the first woman to win Rangefinder‘s Icon of the Year Award. The announcement was made during the WPPI 2020 event last week, where Adler was caught off guard thanks to some careful planning by WPPI and Photo Group Content Director Arlene Evans, as well as Adler’s boyfriend and mother.

Rangefinder explains what it means to be named an ‘Icon,’ stating on its website that an Icon is someone who fills many roles; who is ‘super creative and has extraordinary talent’ in addition to serving as a role model, educator and more.

We contacted Adler to talk about her work, the new milestone award and what it means to her. In talking about winning the award, Adler said:

‘Winning Rangefinder’s Icon of the Year in an incredible honor that makes me feel that I am making an impact on my community and its continued success. This award is a beautiful way to show me that my sharing and love for photography and photographers have not gone unnoticed. I am constantly pushing myself to grow, and I hope this journey encourages others to do this same. I’ve been reading Rangefinder and attending WPPI for more than a decade, and this feels like a beautiful culmination… now I just wonder, what’s next! Can’t get much better than this!’

Adler’s photography has been featured in a number of notable publications, including Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire, InStyle and more, and she has worked with major brands like Microsoft, Grey and Edelman. In addition to her photography work, Adler also teaches at events and through various platforms, including everything from online tutorials to books. She explains:

‘My life is centered around creating and sharing. I create images and share the process. I create in-depth tutorials answering all the questions I once had as I grew my career. I create and I share, and I am so lucky to get endless love back from the community—whether in the form of praise, encouragement, or those simply following my journey.’

Adler’s work is showcased on her website, which features collections of photos like ‘Seeing Red,’ ‘Editorial Beauty,’ ‘Skin’ and even ‘Cinemagraphs.’ Looking back over her career, Adler says:

‘I am truly the happiest I’ve ever been and am proud to [have] achieved so many of my life’s goals. I know that along the way there have been so many other gracious photographers, educators and industry leaders that have shared their knowledge, given me opportunities, encouraged me and ultimately been so important to my success. Because of this, I realize just how important it is for those with success to share with their community however they can.’

In addition to her website, Adler’s work can be found on her Instagram and her Canon Ambassador page.

  • Afterglow: Luma Tower, Glasgow’s Shining Art Deco Icon

[ By Steve in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

    LUMA Tower 1
Rising from the trashes of vandalism and neglect, Glasgow‘s former Luma Light Bulb Factory has recaptured its Art Deco glory as the residential Luma Tower.

The “Dirty Thirties” were especially gritty in Scotland but as the dark clouds of war gathered, from Glasgow’s mighty Sheildhall Manufacturing Complex there emanated a brief shining moment of brilliant light. The British Luma Co-Operative Lamp Company was the source – opening in 1938 in conjunction (though not part of) the Empire Exhibition held in nearby Bellahouston Park, the Anglo-Swedish joint venture company was housed in a strikingly beautiful Art Deco edifice which featured a glazed “conning tower” soaring 84 feet into the Scottish sky. Kudos to Flickr user Andrew Lynch for our lead image and the Glasgow City Archives for the circa-1939 photo above..

The combined factory/office building was designed by Cornelius Armour, an architect employed by the Scottish Cooperative Wholesale Society. Armour’s signature flourish was the tower: a visually riveting architectural feature that powerfully melded form and function. Flickr user Ben Allison captures the restored glory of the Luma building in the above series of shots.

Mounted inside the windowed room were a plethora of testing equipment that allowed employees to test light bulbs of all types. That each bulb glowed with superior brilliance was no accident: testing was conducted using electrical voltages above and beyond the lamps’ designed capacity in order to explore longevity issues.

  • Vandalized Villa Savoye: Imagining a Modernist Icon in Ruins

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Photography & Video. ]

    villa vandalized hacked ruined

Le Corbusier’s “machine for living in” is one of the most-studied works of Modern architecture, but what would it look like if it ceased to be preserved and was left to be ransacked and ruined?

    villa savoye graffiti vandalized

Artistic photographer (and photo-editor) Xavier Delory is exploring just this possibility, starting with the Villa Savoye but planning to branch out to other monumental and iconic works as well.

    villa savoye abandoned architecture

The visual devastation is breathtaking: “The ribbon windows that navigate its perimeter have been shattered, haphazard strokes of paint ornament its pilotis, and large pieces of graffiti cover its stark white free façade. The manipulations intend to make a statement about the ‘five points of architecture’, and in turn, highlight the death of modernity.”

    villa modernist building destroyed

In part, he is making a point about preservation and putting architecture on a pedestal: in reality, few buildings are so carefully and lovingly maintained and restored as those few select works that make it into the history books. Indeed, in a way, these are almost architectural fictions that do not reflect ordinary realities of construction and use.

    building facade studies

Other manipulated photo sets by Delory explore different aspects of our built environment and raise questions about contemporary cities, including a series of mixed-material structures that question our obsession with facades and the difficulty of creating variety at scale.

A sequence of hybrid churches-and-supermarkets examines the idolization of commercial structures (have shopping malls become our places of worship?), while a collection of rural homes sans windows and doors makes one wonder if conventional architecture does enough to integrate houses and their landscapes. For fans of faux facades, this series of dissected buildings is also well worth a look.

  • How to Become a Photography Icon: Inspired by Henri-Cartier Bresson

On the 30th of January in 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was killed by three bullets fired at close range. And while the world lost one of its greatest men (arguably), one man gained even more status as one of the most important photographers in the world.  Henri-Cartier Bresson had photographed Gandhi just about an hour before his tragic death.
